The significant advances in reproductive biology within this rapidly expanding field were highlighted at the Serono Symposia, USA, symposium entitled Growth Factors in Reproduc tion. The conference focused on growth factors as polyfunctional regulators of growth and development in the reproductive system. The program was organized into five areas: (1) growth factors as polyfunctional regulators of growth and development, (2) growth factors and gonadal function, (3) regulation of normal and neoplastic mammary growth, (4) regulatory peptides in reproductive tract development and function, and (5) embryo-maternal signaling. This volume constitutes the contributions ofthe invited symposium speakers and is organized into sections representing the five topic areas of the sessions. Drs. Eli Y. Adashi, Robert B. Dickson, David C. Lee, James Hammond, John A. McLachlan, and R. Michael Roberts, who served as chairmen ofthese sessions, not only provided invaluable advice and assistance in organizing the symposium, but contributed significantly to its content. The enthusiasm and esprit de corps of the poster presenters and discussion participants also helped make this symposium succeed as the first of its kind. Finally, special thanks are due Drs. James Posillico and Lisa Kern ofSerono Symposia, USA, for their guidance and support in the conception and planning of the symposium and in the publication of this volume.

Book excerpt: From a logical point of view, cell division is regulated by the environment and by the ability of the cell to respond to the environmental signals. The terminology of the cell cycle, the elaborate mathematical models, and the kinetic analyses are all convenient notations and descriptions of the behavior of populations of cells. However, they tell us very little about the fundamental molecular mechanisms that control cell proliferation. Stated in other terms, what controls cell reproduction are growth factors in the environment and genes and gene products inside the cell or at its surface. This book examines the aforementioned growth factors, the study of which has made very rapid progress in the past few years. The selection of topics has been influenced by logistic considerations, but the book, as a whole, gives a broad survey of the state of the art of this exciting field. For this, thanks are due to the contributors, who have given much time to the preparation of the manuscripts and have met the deadline with a punctuality that is uncommon among biomedical scientists. The events which lead to the birth of a normal healthy infant have their origin long before actual fertilization. Indeed, the whole process can be looked upon as a continuum. Human fertilization and early development, once sequestered in the protective environment of the fallopian tubes and uterus, have now been exposed in the laboratory. These events have, over time, been extensively observed and catalogued in animal models. The tools of modem morphology and molecular biology have reopened issues long since considered settled as facets of early reproduction are reexplored. This volume, consisting of the proceedings of a workshop on uterine and embryonic factors in early pregnancy, has been designed to enhance that effort. Attention is focused largely on early embryonal development with special attention to the interrelationship between the embryo and the uterus in early pregnancy. Each of the contributing scientists brings with him or her the perspective of one specific discipline or another. The common denominator is the application of emerging techniques in modem molecular biology to problems pertaining to embryonal-uterine interaction. The goal is to consider specific areas of concern in a multidisciplinary way and to reexplore the factors behind early development and implantation. Uterine complement, the function of uterine macrophages immunoregulatory loops in the peri-implantation period, colony stimulating factors and interferon-like factors are reviewed and their interrelationship explored.
