Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sugarcane crop, one of the most important crops commercially grown in about 115 countries of the world, faces a number of problems, such as low cane productivity, biotic and abiotic stresses, high cost of cultivation, postharvest losses, and low sugar recovery. This volume addresses these issues and provides a comprehensive account of the major advancements in sugarcane research. The book is compilation of recent achievements in sugarcane development and cultivation. It covers a number of improvements made in cane and sugar yield using both conventional and new biotechnological approaches by agricultural scientists and researchers. The comprehensive coverage includes sustainable sugarcane cultivation, development, and management of sugarcane production, covering farming and biotechnology, entomology, pathology, breeding, physiology, biotechnology, agronomy, seed production, and more. It also presents research on modern crop production methods in a comprehensive and easily understood manner. With chapters from expert researchers from internationally renowned institutes (primarily in India), the volume presents the latest information from the literature at the international level to make it usable to many agroecological regions of the world. It will be a valuable resource for agronomists, breeders, plant physiologists, farmers, and students of agricultural sciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Growing of Sugar Cane develops the fundamental principles of the growing of cane in the hope that cane culture throughout the world will benefit by it. The tremendous strides made in recent years in the knowledge of how to improve the growing of sugar cane, form the subject of this treatise. Cane growing is not a science. As the results of research replace tradition and guesswork, yields are expected to continue to rise. The book opens with a chapter on the factors that affect sugar cane growth. This is followed by separate chapters on seedbed preparation, sugar cane planting, the nutrition and irrigation of sugar cane, drainage, weed control, flowering control, ripening and maturity, harvesting and transportation, and pest and disease control.

Book excerpt: The primary purpose of each of the subsequent chapters of this book is to promulgate quantitative approaches concerned with elucidating mechanisms in a particular area of the nutrition of ruminants, pigs, poultry, fish or pets. Given the diverse scientific backgrounds of the contributors of each chapter (the chapters in the book are arranged according to subject area), the imposition of a rigid format for presenting mathematical material has been eschewed, though basic mathematical conventions are adhered to.

This book was released on 1978 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropical grasses from Saccharum and related genera are being evaluated as candidates for intensive production of solar-dried biomass. Categories of candidate grasses include short, intermediate, and long-rotation crops for co-production with conventional food commodities. The hybrid forage grass Sordan 70A (Northrup King Seeds) is the outstanding short-rotation plant tested to date. Napier grass (var. Common Merker) is a promising intermediate-rotation crop which possibly may be exceeded by several napier grass hybrids. Candidate clones from the Saccharum species sinense and spontaneum are being investigated for use in both long-rotation and minimum-tillage production regimes. Direct comparisons of sugarcane hybrids with napier grass indicate that sugarcane is an inferior candidate for tropical forage production. Sugarcane responded well to narrow row centers at 2 months but the response diminished at 4 and 6 months. For both crops, greater biomass yields were obtained from a single harvest at 6 months than from three 2-month harvests combined. The ability to convert early succulent growth to dry matter is a decisive feature for candidates to be handled as frequently-recut forages. Progress has been made in chemical growth regulation studies. A series of intergeneric hybrid clones are being imported for evaluation as biomass sources. Limited progress was made in biomass candidate breeding. A revised work plan for year 2 is discussed.

Book excerpt: In order to understand a process as complex as nitrogen fixation and to be in a position to manipulate it for the benefit of mankind, researchers are now working at the frontiers of science in many different areas: protein structure and function; catalytic mechanisms; electron transfer processes; regulatory circuits and environmental sensing; metabolic integration; chemical communication between organisms; differentiation; genome structure and function; microbial ecology; plant physiology; plant molecular biology; and agronomy. This volume represents a testimony to the advances in nitrogen fixation research that have been made and the contribution of these efforts to the solution of many other varied scientific problems. Limiting steps for future advances are analyzed and new horizons in nitrogen fixation research are proposed.
