This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 667 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Realizing the need of interaction between universities and research groups in industry, the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry (ECMI) was founded in 1986 by mathematicians from ten European universities. Since then it has been continuously extending and now it involves about all Euro pean countries. The aims of ECMI are • To promote the use of mathematical models in industry. • To educate industrial mathematicians to meet the growing demand for such experts. • To operate on a European Scale. Mathematics, as the language of the sciences, has always played an im portant role in technology, and now is applied also to a variety of problems in commerce and the environment. European industry is increasingly becoming dependent on high technology and the need for mathematical expertise in both research and development can only grow. These new demands on mathematics have stimulated academic interest in Industrial Mathematics and many mathematical groups world-wide are committed to interaction with industry as part of their research activities. ECMI was founded with the intention of offering its collective knowledge and expertise to European Industry. The experience of ECMI members is that similar technical problems are encountered by different companies in different countries. It is also true that the same mathematical expertise may often be used in differing industrial applications.

Book Synopsis Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations by : Peter D. Lax
Download or read book Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations written by Peter D. Lax and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of hyperbolic equations is a large subject, and its applications are many: fluid dynamics and aerodynamics, the theory of elasticity, optics, electromagnetic waves, direct and inverse scattering, and the general theory of relativity. This book is an introduction to most facets of the theory and is an ideal text for a second-year graduate course on the subject. The first part deals with the basic theory: the relation of hyperbolicity to the finite propagation of signals, the concept and role of characteristic surfaces and rays, energy, and energy inequalities. The structure of solutions of equations with constant coefficients is explored with the help of the Fourier and Radon transforms. The existence of solutions of equations with variable coefficients with prescribed initial values is proved using energy inequalities. The propagation of singularities is studied with the help of progressing waves. The second part describes finite difference approximations of hyperbolic equations, presents a streamlined version of the Lax-Phillips scattering theory, and covers basic concepts and results for hyperbolic systems of conservation laws, an active research area today. Four brief appendices sketch topics that are important or amusing, such as Huygens' principle and a theory of mixed initial and boundary value problems. A fifth appendix by Cathleen Morawetz describes a nonstandard energy identity and its uses. -- Back cover.
Book Synopsis Beyond Partial Differential Equations by : Horst Reinhard Beyer
Download or read book Beyond Partial Differential Equations written by Horst Reinhard Beyer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-04-10 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the treatment of linear and nonlinear (quasi-linear) abstract evolution equations by methods from the theory of strongly continuous semigroups. The theoretical part is accessible to graduate students with basic knowledge in functional analysis, with only some examples requiring more specialized knowledge from the spectral theory of linear, self-adjoint operators in Hilbert spaces. Emphasis is placed on equations of the hyperbolic type which are less often treated in the literature.
Book Synopsis Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations by : Matthew Witten
Download or read book Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations written by Matthew Witten and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-17 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations, Volume 1: Population, Reactors, Tides and Waves: Theory and Applications covers three general areas of hyperbolic partial differential equation applications. These areas include problems related to the McKendrick/Von Foerster population equations, other hyperbolic form equations, and the numerical solution. This text is composed of 15 chapters and begins with surveys of age specific population interactions, populations models of diffusion, nonlinear age dependent population growth with harvesting, local and global stability for the nonlinear renewal equation in the Von Foerster model, and nonlinear age-dependent population dynamics. The next chapters deal with various applications of hyperbolic partial differential equations to such areas as age-structured fish populations, density dependent growth in a cell colony, boll-weevil-cotton crop modeling, age dependent predation and cannibalism, parasite populations, growth of microorganisms, and stochastic perturbations in the Von Foerster model. These topics are followed by discussions of bifurcation of time periodic solutions of the McKendrick equation; the periodic solution of nonlinear hyperbolic problems; and semigroup theory as applied to nonlinear age dependent population dynamics. Other chapters explore the stability of biochemical reaction tanks, an ADI model for the Laplace tidal equations, the Carleman equation, the nonequilibrium behavior of solids that transport heat by second sound, and the nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equations and dynamic programming. The final chapters highlight two explicitly numerical applications: a predictor-convex corrector method and the Galerkin approximation in hyperbolic partial differential equations. This book will prove useful to practicing engineers, population researchers, physicists, and mathematicians.

Book excerpt: On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Sophus Lie, an International Work shop "Modern Group Analysis: advanced analytical and computational methods in mathematical physics" has been organized in Acireale (Catania, Sicily, October 27 31, 1992). The Workshop was aimed to enlighten the present state ofthis rapidly expanding branch of applied mathematics. Main topics of the Conference were: • classical Lie groups applied for constructing invariant solutions and conservation laws; • conditional (partial) symmetries; • Backlund transformations; • approximate symmetries; • group analysis of finite-difference equations; • problems of group classification; • software packages in group analysis. The success of the Workshop was due to the participation of many experts in Group Analysis from different countries. This book consists of selected papers presented at the Workshop. We would like to thank the Scientific Committee for the generous support of recommending invited lectures and selecting the papers for this volume, as well as the members of the Organizing Committee for their help. The Workshop was made possible by the financial support of several sponsors that are listed below. It is also a pleasure to thank our colleague Enrico Gregorio for his invaluable help of this volume.

Book Synopsis Linear Holomorphic Partial Differential Equations and Classical Potential Theory by : Dmitry Khavinson
Download or read book Linear Holomorphic Partial Differential Equations and Classical Potential Theory written by Dmitry Khavinson and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2018-07-09 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do solutions of linear analytic PDE suddenly break down? What is the source of these mysterious singularities, and how do they propagate? Is there a mean value property for harmonic functions in ellipsoids similar to that for balls? Is there a reflection principle for harmonic functions in higher dimensions similar to the Schwarz reflection principle in the plane? How far outside of their natural domains can solutions of the Dirichlet problem be extended? Where do the continued solutions become singular and why? This book invites graduate students and young analysts to explore these and many other intriguing questions that lead to beautiful results illustrating a nice interplay between parts of modern analysis and themes in “physical” mathematics of the nineteenth century. To make the book accessible to a wide audience including students, the authors do not assume expertise in the theory of holomorphic PDE, and most of the book is accessible to anyone familiar with multivariable calculus and some basics in complex analysis and differential equations.
