Book Synopsis Group Technology and Cellular Manufacturing by : Nallan C. Suresh
Download or read book Group Technology and Cellular Manufacturing written by Nallan C. Suresh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Group Technology and Cellular Manufacturing (GT/CM) have been widely-researched areas in the past 15 years and much progress has been made in all branches of GT/CM. Resulting from this research activity has been a proliferation of techniques for part-machine grouping, engineering data bases, expert system-based design methods for identifying part families, new analytical and simulation tools for evaluating performance of cells, new types of cell incorporating robotics and flexible automation, team-based approaches for organizing the work force and much more; however, the field lacks a careful compilation of this research and its outcomes. The editors of this book have commissioned leading researchers and implementers to prepare specific treatments of topics for their special areas of expertise in this broad-based philosophy of manufacturing. The editors have sought to be global both in coverage of topic matters and contributors. Group Technology and Cellular Manufacturing addresses the needs and interests of three groups of individuals in the manufacturing field: academic researchers, industry practitioners, and students. (1) The book provides an up-to-date perspective, incorporating the advances made in GT/CM during the past 15 years. As a natural extension to this research, it synthesizes the latest industry practices and outcomes to guide research to greater real-world relevance. (2) The book makes clear the foundations of GT/CM from the core elements of new developments which are aimed at reducing developmental and manufacturing lead times, costs, and at improving business quality and performance. (3) Finally, the book can be used as a textbook for graduate students in engineering and management for studying the field of Group Technology and Cellular Manufacturing.

Book excerpt: Case Studies in Automation Related to Humanization of Work focuses on the role of organization renewal in the humanization of work, including the effects of automation on the industries and workers. The selection first offers information on the quality of working life and work of the social effects of automation committee from Bad Boll to Enschede. Topics include factors and situations that foster or hinder diffusion of successful development in the QWL field and development of alienating work. The book also examines a comparative study in various man-machine systems; work organization with multipurpose assembly robots; and system development and human consequences in the steel industry. The text discusses man-machine interfaces in the Cony-16 integrated manufacturing system, automation of wig-welding, and mechanization of assembly lines in the automotive industry. The book also underscores an approach to the production line of automobiles by man-computer system, including stock minimization, problems of line balancing in assembly process, and production control and inventory. The publication is a dependable reference for readers wanting to study the relationship of automation and quality of work life.
Book Synopsis Work Teams: Past, Present and Future by : M.M. Beyerlein
Download or read book Work Teams: Past, Present and Future written by M.M. Beyerlein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book places current and future work team practices in historical context. Researchers from 10 countries have contributed chapters that represent developments specific to their regions and that illustrate the way ideas spread around the world. Some principles of effective teaming were independently discovered in different countries, and some principles emerged from the work of researchers like Trist, Emery, and Lewin and spread around the world. But all of the practices were driven by the dynamic tension between the psychology of the employee and business necessities. Theories and cases describe autonomous work groups, self-managed work teams, cell teams, and other collaborative work structures. Contributions to the design of such structures came from psychology, management, sociology, industrial engineering, and manufacturing. Because of the challenges inherent in reorganising work around teams instead of individuals, organizations are at different stages in evolving into 21st century work systems.

Book Synopsis Governing the Present by : Nikolas Rose
Download or read book Governing the Present written by Nikolas Rose and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-04-30 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature on governmentality has had a major impact across the social sciences over the past decade, and much of this has drawn upon the pioneering work by Peter Miller and Nikolas Rose. This volume will bring together key papers from their work for the first time, including those that set out the basic frameworks, concepts and ethos of this approach to the analysis of political power and the state, and others that analyse specific domains of the conduct of conduct, from marketing to accountancy, and from the psychological management of organizations to the government of economic life. Bringing together empirical papers on the government of economic, social and personal life, the volume demonstrates clearly the importance of analysing these as conjoint phenomena rather than separate domains, and questions some cherished boundaries between disciplines and topic areas. Linking programmes and strategies for the administration of these different domains with the formation of subjectivities and the transformation of ethics, the papers cast a new light on some of the leading issues in contemporary social science modernity, democracy, reflexivity and individualisation. This volume will be indispensable for all those, from whatever discipline in the social sciences, who have an interest in the concepts and methods necessary for critical empirical analysis of power relations in our present.
Book Synopsis New Forms of Work Organization in Europe by : Peter Grootings
Download or read book New Forms of Work Organization in Europe written by Peter Grootings and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A remarkable development in the sociology of work in recent years has been the explosion of brilliant cross-national and cross-cultural studies in Europe examining the conditions of labor against the background of different economic systems, and differences within each of the major free market, mixed welfare, and planned economic systems that dot the European landscape. In Vienna and Budapest in particular, a group of intellectual workers have gotten together for what can only be described as breakthrough studies in the conditions and purposes of work in post-industrial society. The question of new forms of work organization focuses on job satisfaction, participatory democracy in the work place, levels of productivity, and issues of health and safety in the occupational environment. That these elements are important have long been known. But what this collection of studies emphasizes is the specific mix that produced specific outcomes. It does not shy away from dangerous and tough questions: worker control and control of workers, political participation in contexts of authoritarian regimes, and personal rewards in contexts that once frowned upon private acquisition of capital. The volume is rich in empirical studies and draws the theoretical implications that can and already have had vast policy consequences for workers in the modern " context. Issues relating to job rotation, enrichment, enlargement and autonomy, and others related to new forms of organization starting with the shop floor and extending throughout the management of the enterprise as a whole are dealt with candidly. The social character of labor, long frowned upon as a mechanism for evading bread-and-butter issues, is now recognized, East and West, as a dimension of concern that is growing precisely as the size and character of the labor sector is diminishing. This is must reading for those interested in new forms of social and policy synthesis, and ways of meliorating competing claims of different sectors in modern societies.

Pham of the University of Wales, College of Cardiff. The Flexibility Computerised-Integrated Manufacturing Structure (FCIMS) is a significant innovation in the field of the production science and technology which combines rapid manufacture with the requirements of human society. Due to greater market diversification a new approach is needed as a response to this new manufacturing environment. International expert contributions deal with aspects of this response and describe how to amalgamate higher levels of automation with human-oriented functions, maintaining a high level of productivity. The benefits are an improved international competitiveness and co-operation. Since Human Intelligent-Based Manufacturing deals with the integration of technology and sociology it is of interest to both the academia and industry. Collaboration in manufacturing between Japan, Europe and the United States is a topic of high current interest.
