This book was released on 2009-11-28 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polycyclic groups are built from cyclic groups in a specific way. They arise in many contexts within group theory itself but also more generally in algebra, for example in the theory of Noetherian rings. The first half of this book develops the standard group theoretic techniques for studying polycyclic groups and the basic properties of these groups. The second half then focuses specifically on the ring theoretic properties of polycyclic groups and their applications, often to purely group theoretic situations. The book is intended to be a study manual for graduate students and researchers coming into contact with polycyclic groups, where the main lines of the subject can be learned from scratch. Thus it has been kept short and readable with a view that it can be read and worked through from cover to cover. At the end of each topic covered there is a description without proofs, but with full references, of further developments in the area. An extensive bibliography then concludes the book.

Book Synopsis The Theory of Infinite Soluble Groups by : John C. Lennox
Download or read book The Theory of Infinite Soluble Groups written by John C. Lennox and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 2004-08-19 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central concept in this monograph is that of a soluble group - a group which is built up from abelian groups by repeatedly forming group extensions. It covers all the major areas, including finitely generated soluble groups, soluble groups of finite rank, modules over group rings, algorithmic problems, applications of cohomology, and finitely presented groups, whilst remaining fairly strictly within the boundaries of soluble group theory. An up-to-date survey of the area aimed at research students and academic algebraists and group theorists, it is a compendium of information that will be especially useful as a reference work for researchers in the field.
Download or read book Skew Linear Groups written by M. Shirvani and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with subgroups of groups of the form GL(n,D) for some division ring D. In it the authors bring together many of the advances in the theory of skew linear groups. Some aspects of skew linear groups are similar to those for linear groups, however there are often significant differences either in the method of proof or the results themselves. Topics covered in this volume include irreducibility, unipotence, locally finite-dimensional division algebras, and division algebras associated with polycyclic groups. Both authors are experts in this area of current interest in group theory, and algebraists and research students will find this an accessible account of the subject.

Book Synopsis Exercises in Cellular Automata and Groups by : Tullio Ceccherini-Silberstein
Download or read book Exercises in Cellular Automata and Groups written by Tullio Ceccherini-Silberstein and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-11-01 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book complements the authors’ monograph Cellular Automata and Groups [CAG] (Springer Monographs in Mathematics). It consists of more than 600 fully solved exercises in symbolic dynamics and geometric group theory with connections to geometry and topology, ring and module theory, automata theory and theoretical computer science. Each solution is detailed and entirely self-contained, in the sense that it only requires a standard undergraduate-level background in abstract algebra and general topology, together with results established in [CAG] and in previous exercises. It includes a wealth of gradually worked out examples and counterexamples presented here for the first time in textbook form. Additional comments provide some historical and bibliographical information, including an account of related recent developments and suggestions for further reading. The eight-chapter division from [CAG] is maintained. Each chapter begins with a summary of the main definitions and results contained in the corresponding chapter of [CAG]. The book is suitable either for classroom or individual use. Foreword by Rostislav I. Grigorchuk

Book excerpt: This is an abridged edition of the author's previous two-volume work, Ring Theory, which concentrates on essential material for a general ring theory course while ommitting much of the material intended for ring theory specialists. It has been praised by reviewers:**"As a textbook for graduate students, Ring Theory joins the best....The experts will find several attractive and pleasant features in Ring Theory. The most noteworthy is the inclusion, usually in supplements and appendices, of many useful constructions which are hard to locate outside of the original sources....The audience of nonexperts, mathematicians whose speciality is not ring theory, will find Ring Theory ideally suited to their needs....They, as well as students, will be well served by the many examples of rings and the glossary of major results."**--NOTICES OF THE AMS

This book was released on 2002-01-30 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of different gomomorphic images on the structure of a group is one of the most important and natural problems of group theory. The problem of describing a group with all its gomomorphic images known, i.e. reconstructing the whole thing using its reflections, seems especially natural and promising. This theme has a history that is almost a half-century long. The authors of this book present well-established results as well as newer, contemporary achievements in this area from the common integral point of view. This view is based on the implementation of module theory for solving group problems. Evidently, this approach requires investigation of some specific types of modules: infinite simple modules and just infinite modules (note that every infinite noetherian module has either an infinite simple factor-module or a just infinite factor-module). This book will therefore be useful for group theorists as well as ring and module theorists. Also, the level, style, and presentation make the book easily accessible to graduate students.

Book excerpt: This volume celebrates the major impact on modern group theory made by Philip Hall. The survey articles were commissioned to provide reasonably self-contained, up-to-date and forward-looking accounts of finite and infinite group theory. Mathematicians working on group theory and ring theory will find this volume interesting and useful, and the material is accessible to students specializing in algebra. This book was prepared for Philip Hall's 80th birthday, but is now published after his death as a tribute to his genius. FROM THE PREFACE: This book was to have been an eightieth birthday present for Philip Hall. In the summer of 1980 the Council of the London Mathematical Society asked us to edit a volume to mark Hall's 80th birthday on the eleventh of April 1984. We decided to produce a book in two parts: the first to consist of commissioned survey articles and the second of submitted research papers. Because we intended to invite research articles by advertisement, we had to tell Hall something of our plans; this we did at a pub lunch outside Cambridge in May 1981. At the same time we asked him if he would agree to take part in a birthday celebration in his honour which had been proposed by the Society. Characteristically he said that he would prefer no public festivity; but he liked the idea of a book, especially the surveys. Our idea was that each survey would give a reasonably self-contained, up-to-date and forward-looking account of an area in which Hall had made important contributions. In view of Hall's considerable impact on modern group theory, we hoped that the essays would together form a fairly coherent picture of the subject. So as to avoid too much overlap, we suggested to each author the area we should like him to cover, but only in broad terms; the choice of material within the suggested area was left entirely to him. It was inevitable, perhaps, that gaps would remain. When Hall died on 30th December 1982, we felt that the second half of the planned book was no longer appropriate, but that the essays should still be published. We offer them here not as a memorial volume, since they were largely written while Philip Hall was alive and well, but as a tribute to his genius.
Download or read book Polycyclic Groups written by Daniel Segal and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-11-17 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of polycyclic groups is a branch of infinite group theory which has a rather different flavour from the rest of that subject. This book is a comprehensive account of the present state of this theory. As well as providing a connected and self-contained account of the group-theoretical background, it explains in detail how deep methods of number theory and algebraic group theory have been used to achieve some very recent and rather spectacular advances in the subject. Up to now, most of this material has only been available in scattered research journals, and some of it is new. This book is the only unified account of these developments, and will be of interest to mathematicians doing research in algebra, and to postgraduate students studying that subject.

Download or read book Linear Groups written by Martyn R. Dixon and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-04-03 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linear Groups: The Accent on Infinite Dimensionality explores some of the main results and ideas in the study of infinite-dimensional linear groups. The theory of finite dimensional linear groups is one of the best developed algebraic theories. The array of articles devoted to this topic is enormous, and there are many monographs concerned with matrix groups, ranging from old, classical texts to ones published more recently. However, in the case when the dimension is infinite (and such cases arise quite often), the reality is quite different. The situation with the study of infinite dimensional linear groups is like the situation that has developed in the theory of groups, in the transition from the study of finite groups to the study of infinite groups which appeared about one hundred years ago. It is well known that this transition was extremely efficient and led to the development of a rich and central branch of algebra: Infinite group theory. The hope is that this book can be part of a similar transition in the field of linear groups. Features This is the first book dedicated to infinite-dimensional linear groups This is written for experts and graduate students specializing in algebra and parallel disciplines This book discusses a very new theory and accumulates many important and useful results
