Book excerpt: Nature has established numerous methods for synthesis of complex molecules utilizing simple and abundant resources such as the use of CO2, H2O and N2 using sunlight as a source of energy. Even more impressive are the high chemo-, regio-, and stereoselectivites observed in these transformations with a wide variety of both prochiral and chiral substrates. However, methods for the enantioselective incorporation of feedstock materials such as CO, HCN, CO2 or simple alkenes into prochiral molecules are limited and remain an important challenge in the field. The hydrovinylation reaction (HV), where ethylene is added across a carbon-carbon double bond, has been known for nearly fifty years, starting with the works of Hata, Alderson and Wilke. During the past few years, through an approach that relied mostly on mechanistic insights and systematic examination of ligand effects, our group discovered a number of protocols for Ni(II)- and Co(II)-catalyzed enantioselective hydrovinylation (HV) reactions of vinylarenes, 1,3-dienes and strained olefins. While the Ni(II)-catalyzed hydrovinylation (HV) reaction is one of the most selective asymmetric catalyzed carbon-carbon bond forming reactions, its use has been limited to alkenes conjugated to an aromatic ring and strained alkenes. We recently found Co(II)-bisphosphine complexes show much improved regioselectivity with broader functional group compatibility in 1,3-dienes. By utilizing finely tuned catalysts derived from Co(II)-bisphosphine complexes and Me3Al or methylaluminoxane (MAO) acyclic (E) and (Z)-1,3-dienes were found to undergo efficient hydrovinylation giving mostly 1,4-hydrovinylation products in an atmosphere of ethylene. In order to expand the hydrovinylation chemistry, we turned our attention to one of the mostly widely used intermediates on organic chemistry, viz., silyl enol ethers. Trialkylsilyl enol ethers are exceptionally versatile intermediates often used as enolate surrogates for the synthesis of carbonyl compounds. Yet there are no reports of broadly applicable, catalytic methods for the synthesis of chiral silyl enol ethers carrying latent functionalities useful for synthetic operations beyond the many possible reactions of the enol ether moiety itself. The work presented herein reports a general procedure for highly catalytic (substrate : catalyst ratio up to 1000:1) and enantioselective (96% to 98% major enantiomer) synthesis of silyl enol ethers bearing a vinyl group at a chiral carbon at the beta-position. The reactions, run under ambient conditions, use trialkylsiloxy-1,3-dienes and ethylene (1 atmosphere) as precursors, and readily available (bis-phosphine)-cobalt(II) complexes as catalysts. Once we have established the HV reaction conditions of the siloxydienes, we turn our attention towards diastereoselective functionalization of the hydrovinylated products. Under optimized conditions, we are able to successfully utilize our 1,4-hydrovinylated products as reactive nucleophilic synthons for several electrophilic reactions keeping moderate to good diastereomeric ratios. The silyl enolates can be readily converted into novel enantiopure vinyl triflates, a class of highly versatile cross-coupling reagents, enabling the syntheses of other enantiomerically pure trisubstituted alkene intermediates not easily accessible by current methods.

While the majority of cross coupling reactions rely on one transition-metal catalyst which reacts with a stoichiometric metal reagent, the combination of two metal catalysts in reactions has the potential to significantly increase the expediency towards synthetic targets, eliminating the need for stoichiometric metal reagents and improving functional group compatibility. There are many precedents for the combination of catalysts in organic methodology, however relatively few examples of multimetallic catalyzed reactions exist, and even fewer examples exist where the mechanism between the two catalytic metals is understood. The aim of the projects communicated in this thesis is two-fold: (1) To design new and efficient ways to form useful carbon-carbon bonds (Csp2-Csp3, Csp2-Csp2, and Csp2-Csp2) from readily available starting materials and (2) to provide insight into how two transition metal catalysts can cooperate in a reaction to achieve high selectivity and yield. Chapter 1 reviews the importance of carbon-carbon bond formation and introduces the main methods of cross coupling, including the concept of multimetallic catalysis. Previous examples of dual metal catalysis are summarized in the literature and the advantages and challenges of using two metals in a catalytic system are discussed. Chapter 2 presents a nickel and cobalt catalyzed strategy for the formation of Csp2-Csp3 bonds. The first attempted cross electrophile couplings to form diarylmethanes from benzyl halides and aryl iodides is reported in moderate selectivity, followed by the strategic optimization of the co-catalytic system which enables higher yields and selectivity through the coupling of benzyl sulfonate esters with aryl halides. In this reaction, nickel reacts selectively with aryl halides through an oxidative addition step, while cobalt phthalocyanine generates radicals through an Sn2 reaction with benzyl sulfonate esters, followed by homolysis. The extension of this method to coupling benzyl phosphonate esters and primary and secondary benzyl chlorides is also presented. Chapter 3 reports the quest for and ultimate discovery of a multimetallic catalyzed Csp2-Csp2 coupling. Beginning with stoichiometric transmetalation studies for the coupling of aryl C-H bonds with aryl C-X bonds, the reaction of various metal aryl complexes based on iridium, ruthenium, copper, nickel, and palladium are described. While these reactions were ineffective in generating unsymmetrical biaryls, the catalytic combination of a nickel and palladium catalyst to couple aryl bromides with aryl trifluoromethanesulfonate esters for the design of a cross Ullman reaction was a success. This reaction provided access to a variety of unsymmetrical biaryls maintaining an equimolar catalyst loading of the two metals, and showed promise for later development of the formation of useful unsymmetrical bipyridines and dienes. The scope of this remarkable reaction, the origin of selectivity, and the enhancement in rate and selectivity by a KF additive is presented. Additionally, the optimization strategy towards coupling chlorobenzene and electron-rich aryl chlorides is communicated. Finally, this chapter includes the first attempted multimetallic catalyzed multicomponent reactions with the nickel and palladium as well as nickel and cobalt catalyzed systems, including carbonylation, and the difunctionalization of olefins and alkynes."--Pages xii-xiii.

The MBH reaction is an atom-economical method of rapid increase of molecular complexity. The development of this process has received considerable attention in recent years. This dissertation presents the development of a new catalytic system for the symmetric and asymmetric MBH reaction. The new system for the racemic version of this reaction was accomplished employing a 1:1:1 ratio of catalytic amounts (10 mol%) of MgI2, TMEDA and DMAP and proved to be highly effective. For the asymmetric version was developed a highly enantio-selective system based on Fu's planar chiral DMAP derivative (II) with ee ́s up to 98%. Abnormal MBH adducts are obtained employing either ethyl 2,3-butadienoate or ethyl propiolate in good yields, in the presence if MgI2 and either a tertiary amine or phosphine as the nucleophile. The [alpha], [beta]-unsaturated carbonyls where prepared by a modified direct [alpha]-methylenation using paraformaldehyde, diisopropylammonium trifluoroacetate, and catalytic acid or base with excellent yields for several carbonyls compounds. The Negishi cross-coupling reaction is the Pd or Ni-catalyzed stereoselective cross-coupling or organozincs and aryl-, alkenyl-, or alkynyl halides. Enantioselective Negishi cross-coupling of aryl zincs and [alpha]-bromo ketones was accomplished employing a NCN Pincer complex as the catalyst with ee ́s up 99%. The required pincer complexes have been prepared by the oxidative addition of pincer ligands with palladium or nickel. Additionally, It has been developed a direct and highly active, (NCN)-Pd catalytic system for the [alpha]-arylation of ketones with a variety of aryl bromides using the air and moisture stable [t-BuPheBox-Me2]PdBr (XVI) as the catalyst. The adducts are obtained in excellent yields (92% average for 20 examples) in only 1 hour using 1 mol% of catalyst loading. Perhaps more importantly, the work described here shows that XVI is highly reactive, highly selective, even on substrates bearing challenging functional groups such alkenes.
