Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In hard rock terrain, shallow water wells generally have a poor to moderate yield. Sinking wells deeply to tap yielding fracture zones often backfires, because the borehole may miss the saturated fracture zones at depths. A wrong approach to groundwater exploration in hard rock has therefore often led to unnecessary recurring expenditures and waste
Book Synopsis Modern Groundwater Exploration by : Robert A. Bisson

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New exploration tools and techniques for a breakthrough paradigm of regional groundwater occurrence Fresh water is undoubtedly our most precious resource aside from the air we breathe, and the only commodity whose cost has steadily risen over time. At the same time, our understanding of the origins, pathways, and recharge mechanisms of the earth's most valuable "economic" mineral-groundwater-remains in the nineteenth century. It is ironic that this scientific anachronism is contributing to a global shortage of available fresh water supplies while oil, gas, and mineral discoveries have proliferated, vastly increasing the world's energy, precious metals, and industrial mineral reserves. Modern Groundwater Exploration details applications and results of proven twenty-first- century technologies and geological concepts adapted from the oil, gas, and mineral exploration industries for evaluating, developing, and managing previously undiscovered, massive, sustainable groundwater resources. Unprecedented in both its scope and authority, this timely book presents: * A new groundwater paradigm, coined Megawatershed, which accurately and comprehensively describes the earth's natural complex groundwater systems * Innovative exploration, drilling, and testing technologies that make major new ground-water sources more locatable and cost-effective to produce than ever before * Actual case studies in which megawatershed methods have identified vast quantities of new water and brought new hope to previously arid and desperately water-short locales * Chapters by former OECD DAC chairman Alexander R. Love, geopolitical analyst Dr. Ewan Anderson, and former director of the Trinidad and Tobago Water Resources Agency Dr. Utam Maharaj on the tremendous global implications of the megawater-shed paradigm. These experts explore the many beneficial applications of megawater-shed development, from macroeconomics to development of small island developing state (SIDS), and from critical environmental issues to water conflict resolution and the potential for a second "green revolution" The world's need for clean, dependable water is more urgent-and addressable-than ever before. Let Modern Groundwater Exploration introduce you to the authors' revolutionary megawatershed paradigm, along with the latest concepts and technologies for accessing vast reservoirs of groundwater-still today's safest, cleanest, and most plentiful water resource.

It is a text-cum-reference book not only for students, research scholars and practicing earth scientists but also for practicing civil and agricultural engineers working in the application of groundwater resources, engaged in its exploration, development, contamination, legislation and management. The general readers can also refer the book for understanding the groundwater domain for adequate knowledge, as groundwater resources are essential life support commodity which is replenishable but not inexhaustible.
Book Synopsis Groundwater Exploration and Development in Basement Complex Area by : Martin Eduvie
Download or read book Groundwater Exploration and Development in Basement Complex Area written by Martin Eduvie and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-02 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The groundwater potential of the basement complex area of southern Kaduna state has been investigated using a multidisciplinary approach. These include: basic geological, hydrogeological, geophysical and water quality analysis. The area is underlain by Precambrian migmatite gneiss, granite, shists and newer basalts. The results of geophysical survey using the electromagnetic (EM) and resistivity methods proved to be effective in locating and assessing regolith aquifers. Interpretation of the sounding curves obtained in the study area, suggests that the subsurface layering ranges from 3- 5 layers. The evaluation of hydrogeological borehole parameters gave borehole yield range of 25.9 - 1089m3/day with a mean value of 275m3/day. The specific capacity values ranged from 0.528 - 132.48m3/day/m. The value of transmissivity of the boreholes ranged from 0.359 to 101m2/day. The quality of water exhibits low total mineralization. The groundwater can be classified as Ca-Na-HCO3 fresh water. A survey of 52 existing boreholes showed that more than 60% were not functioning due lack of geophysical surveys, proper borehole design and maintenance.

This book was released on 1988-04-30 with total page 868 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Field work, supplemented by laboratory studies, is a cornerstone for the geological sciences. This volume provides an introduction to general field work through selected topics that illustrate specific techniques and methodologies. One hundred and twenty-three main entries prepared by leading authorities from around the world deal with aspects of exploration surveys, geotechnical engineering, environmental management. field techniques, mapping, prospecting, and mining. Special efforts were made to include topics that consider aspects of environmental geology in particular those subjects that involve field inspections related to, for example, the placement of artificial fills, sediment control in canals and waterways, the geologic effects of cities, or the importance of expansive soils to environmental management and engineering. In addition, some widely ranging topics dealing with legal affairs, geological methodology, the scope and organization of geology, report writing, and other concepts, such as those related to plate tectonics and continental drift, provide a necessary perspective to the arena of field geology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ground water resources are receiving global attention, as human population growth and development cause significant changes to the earth system. It plays a major role in ensuring livelihood security in many parts of South Asia and its contribution to poverty alleviation is substantial. The complex nature of ground water problems in the Indian Sub-continent requires a precise delineation of the ground water regimes in different hydro geological settings and socio-economic conditions and is a primary necessity for sustainable and equitable management. Strategies to respond to ground water over-exploitation and deteriorating water quality must be based on a new approach. Practical policies and various solution options urgently need to be formulated and implemented to prevent the development problems. There is pressing need to evolve workable methods and approaches based on modern scientific researches on ground water resources, as well as to build a social framework including community participation at all levels for a ground water development system. The community participation in water pumping policies, incentives of efficient use, affordability of low income users and other vulnerable groups, water awareness are prime factors for success of any ground water based water supply project.
