Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peanut Agriculture and Production Technology: Integrated Nutrient Management focuses on agricultural techniques and integrated nutrient management of peanuts (Arachis hypogaea L.). Peanuts are the second most important oil crop of India, occupying 5.7 million hectares, with an average production of 0.8 ton/ha, which is 23.5% of the India’s total oil seed production. Worldwide annual production of shelled peanuts was 42 million metric tons in 2014. It is the world’s 4th most important source of edible oil and the 3rd most important source of vegetable protein. The volume includes basic and advanced information on production, agrotechniques, and integrated nutrient management of Arachis hypogaea L. crop plant. It studies the physiology of the peanut, looking at the proper environmental conditions for optimal growth as well as under various subnormal conditions. It explores the methods of nitrogen application as well as the influence of different sowing dates and population densities to harvest its full yield potential. The book covers methods to achieve balanced nutrition, including using organic manures in groundnut farming to enhance yielding ability. The book will be a rich resource for those in agriculture, horticulture, and allied sciences, particularly for agricultural scientists in plant and crop physiology, agronomy, and soil science. Farm owners and managers of peanut crops and production will also benefit from the information provided in this volume.

Book Synopsis A Global Mapping System for Bambara Groundnut Production by : Sayed N. Azam-Ali
Download or read book A Global Mapping System for Bambara Groundnut Production written by Sayed N. Azam-Ali and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes an approach to assess locations and areal expenses that have potential for the production of bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea L. Verdc) across the world. The methodology was applied both to regions such as Africa, where the crop is widely cultivated but where experimental evidence is limited, and to new regions that have not previously been associated with bambara groundnut but where environmental factors are conductive for productive growth. A weather generator and a crop simulation model of bambara groundnut (BAMnut) were incorporated into a Geographical Information System (GIS) to predict, for the first time, bambara groundnut production for the world. BAMnut is a process-based model that uses physiological principles to describe the capture and use of environmental resources principally solar radiation and soil moisture. This mechanistic approach allows crop growth and yield to be predicted for regions beyond those used in the development of the model or regions where bambara groundnut is currently cultivated. The preliminary identification of potentially suitable areas for production, based on the agro-ecological requirements of the crop, serve as a useful prelude to detailed field investigations on bambara groundnut to identify appropriate management practices and may provide a basis for a similar assessment on many other underutilized crops.--Publisher's description.

Book Synopsis Promoting oil seed crops in Pakistan: Prospects and constraints by : Rana, Abdul Wajid
Download or read book Promoting oil seed crops in Pakistan: Prospects and constraints written by Rana, Abdul Wajid and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2022-03-09 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oilseeds in Pakistan characterizes a policy failure as the production of oilseeds as well as edible oil has been on the decline despite various initiatives. The country has been augmenting growing demand-supply gap through imports since early 1970. The domestic production contributes only 13-15 percent of the total consumption while 85-87 percent is met through imports. Per capita consumption of vegetable oil has risen from 5.31 kg in 1973-74 to 20 kg in 2018 and is likely to move to 22 kg by 2028 projecting total consumption to 6.5 million tons by 2028 against current local production of less than 0.5 million tons, widening the demand-supply gap further. The import bill for these products has reached over US$4 billion in FY2021 which is straining the balance of trade and the balance of payment. With global uncertainties and challenges facing the oilseeds sector including the sharp price fluctuations and market instability and favorable tariffs for imports, the import bill is likely to move upward underscoring the need for well thought out policy and planning.

This book was released on with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BOOK DESCRIPTION Title: Diseases of Crops in Eritrea: A Comprehensive Academic Handbook on ‘Diseases of Agricultural Crops’ in Eritrea. Introduction: This book, "Diseases of Crops in Eritrea" presents a comprehensive overview of the prevailing plant diseases in Eritrea's agricultural crops. The State of Eritrea is located in North-East Africa, neighbouring with Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt. As a nation boasting diverse agro-climatic zones, Eritrea's fertile soil supports an array of field crops, horticultural crops, and fruit trees. However, the agricultural ecosystem is confronted with challenges posed by various plant diseases, which can have significant ramifications on crop productivity and quality. This meticulously crafted book is designed with more than 250 images to illuminate the infections of crops and the importance of effective disease management. Chapters and Contents: This book is organized into six chapters, each delving into specific aspects, such as Introduction; Diseases of Field Crops, Horticultural Crops, Fruit Orchards, Spice and Ornamental Crops; and the Disease Diagnosis. 1. Introduction: The initial chapter provides an in-depth analysis of the current trends in crop production within Eritrea. It explores the underlying causes of diseases, including fungal, bacterial, nematode, and viral infections. The development and pathogenic cycles of these diseases are elucidated, while symptomatology plays a pivotal role in facilitating disease identification. 2. Diseases of Field Crops: In the second chapter, the focus is on over 104 diseases that afflict 16 staple food crops crucial to Eritrea's agricultural sector. A detailed examination of these diseases enables readers to understand the threats they pose to crop yields and the overall food security of the nation. 3. Diseases of Horticultural Crops: Chapter three delves into 84 diseases affecting 12 commonly cultivated horticultural crops across Eritrea's agricultural regions. By shedding light on these prevalent diseases, the chapter aims to raise awareness among farmers and growers, fostering effective disease management practices. 4. Diseases of Fruit Orchards: The fourth chapter zeroes in on 40 diseases, encompassing fungal, bacterial, viral, and nematode infections impacting six major fruit orchards in Eritrea. The economic significance of these orchards, coupled with their susceptibility to diseases, underscores the importance of proper disease management strategies. 5. Diseases of Spice and Ornamental Crops: Chapter five focuses on seven diseases that affect three spice and ornamental crops. By acknowledging the threats posed to these crops, the chapter advocates for the implementation of preventive and control measures to safeguard their cultivation. 6. Disease Diagnosis and techniques of disease identification Strategies: The final chapter offers invaluable insights into disease diagnosis techniques, equipping readers with the tools to accurately identify and combat plant diseases. Furthermore, every chapter expounds on distribution of the disease, economic importance, disease symptoms, the causal agents, disease development/ cycles and management strategies, including cultural practices and Integrated Pest Management, which are crucial for sustainable and environmentally friendly agriculture. Additionally, the prudent use of chemical control is discussed, emphasizing adherence to recommended dosages to minimize undesirable effects on beneficial organisms, human health, and the environment. Conclusion: "Diseases of Crops in Eritrea" highlights the substantial threats that plant diseases pose to Eritrea's agricultural productivity. However, this academic and enlightening publication also serves as a beacon of hope, promoting integrated disease management approaches that can mitigate these challenges and secure a prosperous horticultural industry for the nation's future. The inclusion of a glossary and index further enhances the book's utility, making it an indispensable resource for researchers, agronomists, horticulturists, and anyone with a vested interest in Eritrea's agricultural well-being.
