Book excerpt: In the latter half of the twentieth century, The American upper class has become less like an aristocracy governing and guiding the nation and more like a caste, a privileged and closed body whose contribution to national leadership has steadily declined. This loss of power and authority has been the focus of the work of E. Digby Baltzell, whose 1964 work, "The Protestant Establishment, "analyzed the fate and function of a predominantly Anglo-Saxon and Protestant upper class in an ethnically and religiously heterogeneous democracy. After 27 years, Baltzell's theory of the structure and function of the establishment remains unique in the literature of class stratification and authority. Baltzell views an open and authoritative establishment as a necessary and desirable part of the process of securing responsible leaders in a democratic society. Such an establishment is the product of upper-class institutions that are open to talented individuals of varying ethnic and social backgrounds. The values of upper-class tradition include an aristocratic ethos emphasizing the duty to lead, as opposed to the snobbish ethos of caste that emphasizes only the right to privilege. Baltzell regards this as a protector of freedom in modern democratic societies, guaranteeing rules of fair play in contests of power and opinion. As Baltzell points out, historically, the alternatives to rule by establishments have been, rule by functionaries and demogogues, neither of which has proven satisfactory in protecting freedoms. As against Marxists, who see hegemony as a social evil, Baltzell, following Tocqueville, sees it as necessary to the well-being of society. Hegemonic establishments give coherence to the social spheres of greatest contest. They do not eliminate conflict, but prevent it from ripping society apart. Baltzell's work provides uncommon insight into the relationship of social class and personal power in contemporary America. This book will be of interest to sociologists, political scientists, historians of urban life, and American studies specialists.

When most buildings were burned during a March 1676 assault, Groton was abandoned for safer ground. With true determination, settlers returned two years later to rebuild their village. From that day forward, Groton continued to grow in population, industry, and community engagement. In 1869, resident George S. Boutwell served as secretary of the treasury under Pres. Ulysses S. Grant and hosted a reception for the president when he visited Groton. During the town's industrial development in the last half of the 19th century, the Groton Leatherboard Company was established along the banks of the Squannacook River in West Groton. Lawrence Academy and Groton School have educated students since the 18th and 19th centuries, respectively. Continuing Groton's tradition of offering quality education, the Lowthorpe School was founded in 1901 as the first landscape architecture school devoted to training only women. Despite all the changes that invariably altered the landscape and the infrastructure, Groton remains, in a sense, the same as it began: a town striving for self-sufficiency and success but also dedicated to shaping the world around it.

Mr. Carpenter lived at Niantic Ferry, of which he had a lease from Edward Palmes. He left an only son, David, baptized Nov. 12th, 1682, and several daughters. His relict married William Stevens, of Killingworth. Alexander Pygan, died in 1701. On his first arrival in the plantation, Mr. Pygan appears to have been a lawless young man, of " passionate and distempered carriage," as it was then expressed; one who we may suppose " left his country for his country's good." But the restraints and influences with which he was here surrounded, produced their legitimate effect, and he became a discreet and valuable member of the community. Alexander Pygan, of Norwich, Old England, was married unto Judith, daughter of William Redfin, (Redfield, ) June 17th, 1667. Children. 1. Sarah, born Feb. 23d, 1669-70; married Nicholas Hallam. 2. Jane, " Feb., 1670-1; married Jonas Green. Mrs. Judith Pygan died April 30th, 1678. After the death of his wife, Mr. Pygan dwelt a few years at Saybrook, where he had a shop of goods, and was licensed by the county court as an innkeeper. Here also he married an estimable woman, Lydia, relict of Samuel Boyes, April 15th, 1684. Only one child was the issue of this marriage. 3. Lydia, born Jan. 10th, 16S4-5; married Rev. Eliphalet Adams. Samuel Boyes, the son of Mrs. Lydia Pygan, by her first husband, was bom Dec. 6th, 1673. Mr. Pygan soon returned with his family to New London, where he died in the year 1701. He is the only person of the family name of Pygan, that the labor of genealogists has as yet brought to light in New England. His relict, Mrs. Lydia Pygan, died July 20th, 1734.
