Book excerpt: This new edition of the beloved tales of the Brothers Grimm – selected, translated and edited by Peter Wortsman - is drawn from the 1857 edition of the German original, the last edition reviewed and approved by the Brothers in their lifetime. Over the years, the Brothers' enigmatic narratives have been sanitized by Disney and children's book editors for modern consumption; this indispensable edition restores their sting and vigor to the original prose. In Wortsman’s words, his translation is a return to "a tincture of concentrated man-eating ogre and ground hag tooth, diluted in blood, sweat and tears, as a potent vaccine against the crippling effects of fear and fury." These fortifying imaginative vaccines are accompanied by twenty-four full-color illustrations by Haitian artists, including Edouard Duval-Carrié, Pascale Monnin, and Frankétienne. Edwidge Danticat observes that many Haitian painters bring "forth another canvas beneath the one we see." These works’ imaginative scope, vitality, and evocation of the unconscious open deep channels between the two traditions, shedding new light and shadow on the classic tales.

Book excerpt: They saw their work in gathering the fairy tales of Europe as an academic exercise, but the Brothers Grimm-aka German folklorists and linguists JAKOB (1785-1863) and WILHELM GRIMM (1786-1859)-are today remembered best as tellers of dark stories for children. Here, in one compact volume, are 53 of the most beloved of the stories they assembled, from well-known ones such as "The Sleeping Beauty," "The Frog Prince," "Rapunzel," and "Hansel and Grethel" to more obscure ones including "The Rabbit's Bride," "Six Soldiers of Fortune," "Faithful John," and "The Three Spinsters." A treasury of classic stories, this replica of an 1886 edition-translated by English writer LUCY CRANE (1842-1882), with beautiful line drawings by her brother, William Crane-will delight children and adults alike.

Book excerpt: ONCE upon a time... in the middle of a thick forest stood a small cottage, the home of a pretty little girl known to everyone as Little Red Riding Hood. One day, her Mummy waved her goodbye at the garden gate, saying, "Grandma is ill. Take her this basket of cakes, but be very careful. Keep to the path through the wood and don't ever stop. That way, you will come to no harm." Little Red Riding Hood kissed her mother and ran off. "Don't worry", she said, "I'll run all the way to Grandma's without stopping". Full of good intensions, the little girl made her way through the wood, but she was soon to forget her mother's wise words. "What lovely strawberries! And so red..."

Book excerpt: GERMAN POPULAR STORIES BY THE BROTHERS GRIMM A reprint of the famous Brothers Grimm book of fairy tales, German Popular Stories (a.k.a. Children's and Household Tales or Kinder- und Hausmarchen). This book, published for the centenary of the 1812 Children's and Household Tales, 'radically changed the destiny of what we today call the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm'. The book features the 1868 book of Edgar Taylor's translations of the Brothers Grimm, the first translations of the tales into English, which included reprints of the first two editions of 1823 and 1826 of the Grimms' stories in one volume, plus the original notes by Taylor. The book is illustrated with remarkable drawings by one of the great artists of the Victorian era, George Cruikshank, with an introduction by John Ruskin. The wealth of additional material includes letters by Sir Walter Scott and the Grimms, a note on Cruikshank, extracts from Gammer Grethel, Taylor's follow-up Grimm book, and R. Meek's Introduction to the 1876 edition of Grimm's Goblins: Grimm's Household Stories. Many famous fairy tales are included here, making their first, influential appearance in English: 'The Fisherman and his Wife', 'Tom Thumb', 'The Elves and the Shoemaker', 'King Grisly-beard', 'The Juniper Tree', 'Hansel and Gretel', and 'Snow White'. Edited and introduced by renowned writer and authority on fairy tales, Jack Zipes, professor emeritus of German and comparative literature at the University of Minnesota. In addition to his scholarly work, he is an active storyteller in public schools and has worked with children's theaters in Europe and the United States. Some of Jack Zipes' major publications include Breaking the Magic Spell: Radical Theories of Folk and Fairy Tales (1979), Fairy Tales and the Art of Subversion (1983, rev. ed. 2006), Don't Bet On the Prince: Contemporary Feminist Fairy Tales in North America and England (1986), The Brothers Grimm: From Enchanted Forests to the Modern World (1988), Sticks and Stones: The Troublesome Success of Children's Literature from Slovenly Peter to Harry Potter (2000), Speaking Out: Storytelling and Creative Drama For Children (2004), Hans Christian Andersen: The Misunderstood Storyteller (2005), Why Fairy Tales Stick: The Evolution and Relevance of a Genre (2006), and a guide to fairy tales cinema (2011). Jack Zipes has also translated The Complete Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm (1987) and edited The Oxford Companion to Fairy Tales (2000), and The Great Fairy Tale Tradition (2001). Most recently he has translated and edited The Folk and Fairy Tales of Giuseppe Pitre (2008) and Lucky Hans and Other Merz Fairy Tales (2008) by Kurt Schwitters. Includes illustrations, bibliography, appendices and notes. ISBN 9781861713964. 432 pages. www.crmoon.com"

This book was released on 1812-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grimms' Fairy Tales, initially referred to as the children 's and Household Tales, is a German group of fairy tales by the Grimm brothers or maybe "Brothers Grimm", Wilhelm and Jacob, initially posted on twenty December 1812 Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were 2 of ten kids from their mother Dorothea (nee Zimmer) and father Philipp Wilhelm Grimm. Philipp was a very regarded district magistrate in Steinau an der Straße, aproximatelly fifty km from Hanau. Wilhelm and Jacob were routed to school for a classical training when they had been of age, while the father of theirs was working. They had been extremely hard working pupils throughout the education of theirs. They followed in their father 's footsteps and began to get a degree in law, along with German history. Nevertheless, in 1796, their dad died in the age of forty four from pneumonia. This was obviously a sad time for the Grimms because the household lost almost all monetary assistance and relied on grandfather, Henriette Zimmer, and their aunt, Johann Hermann Zimmer. At the age of eleven, Jacob was compelled to become top of the home and supply for the family of his. After downsizing the home of theirs due to monetary reasons, Henriette sent Wilhelm and Jacob to learn at the prestigious high school, Lyzeum, in Kassel. In school, their grandfather wrote to them saying that due to the current situation of theirs, they had to use themselves industriously to secure the future welfare of theirs. Here is the complete text of the novel with the followings annotations: *Biographical Information: Jacob Ludwig Karl Grimm and Wilhelm Carl Grimm had been born on four January 1785 and twenty four February 1786, respectively, in Hanau in the Landgraviate of Hesse Kassel, within the Holy Roman Empire (present day Germany), to Philipp Wilhelm Grimm, a jurist, then Dorothea Grimm (nee Zimmer), child of a Kassel city councilman. They had been the third-eldest and second- surviving siblings in a family of 9 kids, 3 of whom died in infancy. In 1791 the family relocated to the countryside town of Steinau during Philipp's work there as a district magistrate (Amtmann). The household started to be prominent members of the neighborhood, residing in a big house surrounded by areas. Biographer Jack Zipes writes the brothers have been satisfied in Steinau and "clearly fond of country life".The kids had been educated at home by private tutors, receiving tough instruction as Lutherans, that impressed in each a long-term religious faith. Later, they went to local schools.

They are the stories of characters we’ve known since childhood: Snow White, Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella. But the works originally collected by the Brothers Grimm in the early 1800s are not necessarily the versions told before bedtime. They’re darker and often don’t end very happily--but they're often far more interesting. This edition of Brothers Grimm: 101 Fairy Tales includes all our cherished favorites--“Sleeping Beauty,” “Rumpelstiltskin,” “Little Red Cap,” and many more--in their original versions. Now available as part of the Word Cloud Classics series, Brothers Grimm: 101 Fairy Tales is a must-have addition to the libraries of all classic literature lovers. Many of these stories begin with the familiar refrain of “once upon a time”--but they end with something unexpected and fascinating!
