This long and varied history of Americans’ search for identity illuminates the story of America itself, according to François Weil, as fixations with social standing, racial purity, and national belonging gave way in the twentieth century to an embrace of diverse ethnicity and heritage. The family migrated from York County, Pennsylvania, to Frederick County, Maryland, in 1818, to Clark County, Ohio, in 1834, and to Jay County, Indiana, in 1837. They both died in Jay County. Descendants lived in Indiana, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Oklahoma and elsewhere.
