Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Falklands Saga presents abundant evidence from hundreds of pages of documents in archives and libraries in Buenos Aires, La Plata, Montevideo, London, Cambridge, Stanley, Paris, Munich and Washington DC, some never printed before, many printed here for the first time, in English and, where different, in their original languages, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Latin or Dutch. It provides the facts to correct the fallacies and distortions in accounts by earlier authors. It reveals persuasive evidence that the Falklands were discovered by a Portuguese expedition at the latest around 1518-19, and not by Vespucci or Magellan. It demonstrates conclusively that the Anglo-Spanish agreement of 1771 did not contain a reservation of Spanish rights, that Britain did not make a secret promise to abandon the islands, and that the Nootka Sound Convention of 1790 did not restrict Britain's rights in the Falklands, but greatly extended them at the expense of Spain. For the first time ever, the despairing letters from the Falklands written in German in 1824 to Louis Vernet by his brother Emilio are printed here in full, in both the original German and in English translation, revealing the total chaos of the abortive 1824 Argentine expedition to the islands. This book reveals how tiny the Argentine settlement in the islands was in 1826-33. In April 1829 there were only 52 people, and there was a constant turnover of population; many people stayed only a few months, and the population reached its maximum of 128 only for a few weeks in mid-1831 before declining to 37 people at the beginning of 1833. This work also refutes the falsehood that Britain expelled an Argentine population from the Falklands in 1833. That myth has been Argentina's principal propaganda weapon since the 1960s in its attempts to undermine Falkland Islanders' right to self-determination. In fact Britain encouraged the residents to stay, and only a handful left the islands. A crucial document printed here is the 1850 Convention of Peace between Argentina and Britain. At Argentina's insistence, this was a comprehensive peace treaty which restored "perfect friendship" between the two countries. Critical exchanges between the Argentine and British negotiators are printed here in detail, which show that Argentina dropped its claim to the Falklands and accepted that the islands are British. That, and the many later acts by Argentina described here, definitively ended any Argentine title to the islands. The islands' history is placed in its world context, with detailed accounts of the First Falklands Crisis of 1764-71, the Second Falklands Crisis of 1831-3, the Years of Confusion (1811-1850), and the Third Falklands Crisis of 1982 (the Falklands War), as well as a Falklands perspective on the First and Second World Wars, including the Battle of the Falklands (1914) and the Battle of the River Plate (1939), with extensive details and texts from German sources. The legal status of the Falklands is analysed by reference to legal works, to United Nations resolutions on decolonisation, and to rulings by the International Court of Justice, which together demonstrate conclusively that the islands are British territory in international law and that the Falkland Islanders, who have now (2024) lived in their country for over 180 years and for nine generations, are a unique people who are holders of territorial sovereignty with the full right of external self-determination.

Book excerpt: In this first of the Hannah Pryce series, the protagonist is a newspaper columnist who teaches creative writing to San Diego prison inmates. She is a police detective's widow with two grown children, and a recovering alcoholic. Befriended by her husband's ex-partner, Dave Mayfield, she is drawn into the murder of a prominent actress, Margo Keene. It appears that Margo was stabbed while in a bubble bath, but the Medical Examiner discovers she died from an unidentified poisonous gas. Mayfield and his partner, Rayburn, question Margo's husband, Victor, who implicates the theater prop man (who is killed in jail the next night). Liz Parker, the theater wardrobe mistress, dies from the same poisonous gas. No apparent motive can be found for any of these three murders. At Dave's suggestion, Hannah interviews the suspects for her newspaper column to gain insights into possible motives. Actress Polly Phillips resents Margo for snooping into her private affairs. Suzanne Langley hates Margo because of her long time affair with her husband. Walt Langley loved Margo and suspects she knew too much about Victor's business dealings. Victor seems the grieving husband, but Hannah believes otherwise. Gerda Wilhem, Margo's maid, appears devoted to Margo, but Hannah believes her to be hiding secrets as well. The investigation proves that Victor and Polly Phillips are involved in drug trafficking and money laundering. Gerda Wilhem and her "live-in" friend, Frederick Schmidt, are Polly Phillips' parents with access to the poisonous gas formula. When Hannah seems too close to the truth, Frederick Schmidt attempts to force her car off the road and kill her. When this fails, he kidnaps her and forces her into a drunken stupor for four days. She regains consciousness in a deserted hanger on the Mexican border. Frederick and Polly are there, planning to kill her. Hannah goads Polly into a confession of the murders. While left alone, she calls Dave Mayfield on an airplane radio. He arrives with officers and the DEA. After Hannah safely escapes, the police open fire, killing Polly and Frederick. Safe with Dave, Hannah ponders their life together. "Another cop?" she says. "Why would I want to do that . . . again?"

Book excerpt: RED MAGAZINE's BEST NEW AUTHORS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT NOW 'It's no secret that psychological thrillers have been the big hitters of the literary world in recent years (remember Gone Girl anyone?). Well this debut from Aly Sigdwick is set to do the same.' Who is the Lullaby Girl? Found washed up on the banks of a remote loch, a mysterious girl is taken into the care of a psychiatric home in the Highlands of Scotland. Mute and covered in bruises, she has no memory of who she is or how she got there. The only clue to her identity is the Danish lullaby she sings... Inside the care home, she should be safe. But, harassed by the media and treated as a nuisance by under-pressure staff, she finds the home is far from a haven. And as her memories slowly surface, the Lullaby Girl does her best to submerge them again. Some things are too terrible to remember... but unless she confronts her fear, how can she find out who she really is? Taut, tense and mesmerizing, Lullaby Girl is a shining debut from an exciting and very talented new author. Praise for Lullaby Girl: 'Her work had beautiful textures, and big portions of darkness and humour, with equal parts of a sadness to them... seeing her drawings and tattoos i was not at all surprised that she wrote a novel, or that it was a good one. There is a great sense of tension, and of coldness in the story, but Sidgwick has a keen eye for detail and a dark sense of humour that shines through, making the dark and the cold easier to pass through. And to make the dark passages of the mind bearable is an achievement indeed.' KOLBEINN KARLSSON, author of The Troll King

Gathered together in one volume for the first time, here are all of the incomparable song lyrics of Irving Berlin the lyrics of more than 1,200 songs, 400 of which have never before appeared in print along with anecdotal, historical, and musicological commentary and dozens of photographs. Berlin came from a poor immigrant family and began his career as a singing waiter, but by the time he was nineteen he was publishing his songs and quickly found fame with "Alexander's Ragtime Band" in 1911. In the extraordinary six decades that followed, Berlin wrote one popular hit after another: Blue Skies * Always * Cheek to Cheek * White Christmas * God Bless America * There's No Business Like Show Business * and many more. He also wrote a number of the classics of musical theater's Golden Age, climaxing with Annie Get Your Gun . He penned three Astaire and Rogers films Top Hat, Carefree , and Follow the Fleet as well as the scores of Holiday Inn, Easter Parade , and other films. The breadth of his accomplishment is staggering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning one dynamite paragraph, Ten Storey Love Song follows Bobby the Artist's rise to stardom and horrific drug psychosis, Johnnie's attempts to stop thieving and start pleasing Ellen in bed, and Alan Blunt, a forty-year-old truck driver who spends a worrying amount of time patrolling the grounds of the local primary school. Bobby - the so-called 'love child of Keith Haring and Basquiat', holed up in a Middlesbrough tower block - works on his canvases under the influence of pills-on-toast, acid-on-crackers and Francis Bacon. When Bent Lewis, a famous art dealer from that London appears, Bobby and friends are sent on a sweaty adventure of self-discovery, hedonism and violence involving a 2.5cm-head claw hammer. A love song to a loveless Teesside and a portrait of a deeply dysfunctional, creative and drug-sodden world, Ten Storey Love Song is a ferocious slab of concrete prose peppered with beauty and delivered with glorious abandon.
