Book excerpt: An investigation was carried out to study the drag reduction capabilities of riblets (commercially available) when installed on a supercritical airfoil which was aerodynamically tested in the NAE's High Reynolds Number 2 D Test Facility. The flow conditions in this test ranged from M= 0.15 to M= 0.76, and Re/ft = 1.5 million to Re/ft =8 million. The airfoil with riblets exhibited less drag than a completely turbulent air foil (without riblets) for Mach Number M

Book excerpt: The wind tunnel continues to be the main instrument for providing experimental aerodynamic data to the aerospace industry and the aerodynamic researcher for the purpose of load and performance evaluation and for verification of theoretical results. In both cases it is imperative that the user has confidence in the quality of the results, which means that he must have information on what accuracy to attach to the data. The quality of wind tunnel results depends upon both the accuracy of measurements and the imperfections provided by the wind tunnel environment. Great strides have been made in recent years on measurement accuracy and as a rule this need no longer be of much concern if properly attended to. However, imperfections provided by the wind tunnel environment are still with us and these are today the main sources affecting the quality and accuracy of aerodynamic data obtained in a wind tunnel. It was the purpose of this symposium to try to define what accuracy has presently been achieved in modern facilities and to compare these achievements with the actual demands of the user.

Book excerpt: This volume offers exciting results, perspectives, and case studies for the treatment of problems arising in transonic aerodynamics. New advances including triple deck theory, analysis of stagnation at the nose of a body, transonic choked flow, and the transonic area rule are presented. Interest in analyzing the transonic range of flight, its stability properties, and especially the question of designing reduced drag (shockless or weak shock) airfoils keeps growing. Present day commercial aircraft cruise in the transonic range. Mechanical and aeronautical engineers interested in compressible fluid flows, design of optimal wings, and an understanding of transonic flow held about wings and airfoils will find the book invaluable. This book is understandable to those with a knowledge of continuum mechanics (fluids) and asymptotic methods. It is appropriate for graduate courses in aerodynamics and mathematical methods.
