Book Synopsis Interlacing Traditions by : Luisa Nardini

Book excerpt: This book is the first comprehensive study of the neo-Gregorian chants for the Proper of the Mass that circulated in the Beneventan region between the tenth and the thirteenth centuries. This extensive repertory demonstrates in extraordinary ways the struggles of local cantors to mediate between conformity to a standardized liturgy pursued by the Carolingians and the papacy, and a desire to maintain elements of the local musical culture. Some neo-Gregorian chants were locally composed, while others were imported from other regions. Both imported and local chants reveal the stylistic preferences of local cantors and the interconnections between chant composition and saints' cults and thereby shed light on issues related to the oldest musical repertories of medieval Europe, such as the Byzantine, Roman, Ambrosian, and Beneventan chants. Ultimately, they lead us into a deeper understanding of the musical culture of medieval southern Italy, a territory that, at different times, had been the theatre of incursions and invasions by many peoples (Lombards, Byzantines, Muslims, Normans, Franks, and Romans) and that was also the home to several flourishing Jewish communities. The book's rigorous historical analysis is supported by comprehensive tables, appendices, and indexes; it is also enriched by musical and textual transcriptions as well as images from relevant manuscripts.

Book Synopsis Gregorian and Old Roman Eighth-mode Tracts: A Case Study in the Transmission of Western Chant by : Emma Hornby

This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002: This text uses detailed analysis of the eigth-mode tracts in addressing some of the still unresolved questions of chant scholarship. The first question is that of the nature of the relationship between Old Roman and Gregorian chant, the second, of the relationship between oral and written modes of transmission in the ecclesiastical culture of the Middle Ages. Also, the Middle Ages saw a transition to a culture more dependent on writing. The book investigates the effect this transition had on the way eighth-mode tracts were understood by those who performed and notated them.

Book Synopsis A Manual of Gregorian Chant by : Catholic Church
Download or read book A Manual of Gregorian Chant written by Catholic Church and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2013-06-06 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THIS little book is an adaptation to the special wants of the English speaking countries of the Manuale Missae et Olficiorum compiled from the Solesmes books, which has just been published by Messrs Deselee, Lefebvre & Co. It is chiefly intended to promote congregational singing in those places where the Solesmes books have been adopted, but it may be useful also in the Churches in which other editions are still in use. The Ordinary of the Mass and the Hymn at Vespers are the parts of Divine Service in which the congregation is supposed to join; the same ought to ee said of the Psalms, but as it is difficult to sing them without a pointed Psalter, it has been thought better to leave them out of this book, pointed Psalters having been edited in various places, especially at Solesmes. The chief feature of this English edition is the number of pieces which it contains for Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament. Some of these pieces are already in the Solesmes books: these have been printed without any alteration, for the sake of uniformity. The greatest number has been extracted from manuscripts in the British Museum, as far as possible of English origin: in this case, the English form of the melody has been kept, without any attempt to give a critical edition. As many people have complained of the lack of Plain Chant settings for the 0 Salutaris and Tantum ergo, a certain number have been printed in these books: some of them are already known; the others are transcriptions or adaptations of ancient hymns, mostly from English manuscripts: it seemed it would be better to revive these beautiful melodies than to compose new ones. The latin text of the Ordinary of the Mass is accompanied with a paraphrase by Dom Gueranger. The Lady Abbess of Stanbrook has kindly given permission to use the excellent translation of the Liturgical Year by Dom Laurence Shepherd O. S. B. Special thanks are due from the compiler to the Rev. G. H. Palmer, for putting at his disposal a copy of the Sarum sequences from the original manuscripts, thus saving much time and labour.
Download or read book Gregorian Chant written by David Hiley and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-12-17 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Gregorian chant, and where does it come from? What purpose does it serve, and how did it take on the form and features which make it instantly recognizable? Designed to guide students through this key topic, this book answers these questions and many more. David Hiley describes the church services in which chant is performed, takes the reader through the church year, explains what Latin texts were used, and, taking Worcester Cathedral as an example, describes the buildings in which it was sung. The history of chant is traced from its beginnings in the early centuries of Christianity, through the Middle Ages, the revisions in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and the restoration in the nineteenth and twentieth. Using numerous music examples, the book shows how chants are made and how they were notated. An indispensable guide for all those interested in the fascinating world of Gregorian chant.

Book Synopsis The Restoration of Gregorian Chant by : Pierre Combe
Download or read book The Restoration of Gregorian Chant written by Pierre Combe and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2008-08 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gregorian chant, the Catholic Church's very own music, is proper to the Roman liturgy, but during the course of its long history it has experienced periods of ascendancy and decline. A century ago, Pope Pius X called for a restoration of the sacred melodies, and the result was the Vatican Edition. This book presents for the first time in English the fully documented history of the Gregorian chant restoration. The original French edition was published by the Abbey of Solesmes in 1969.This book describes in careful, vivid detail the strenuous efforts of personalities like Dom Joseph Pothier, Dom Andre Mocquereau, Fr. Angelo de Santi, and Peter Wagner to carry out the wishes of the pope. The attentive reader will not fail to note that many of the questions so fervidly debated long ago are still current and topical today. Robert A. Skeris' introduction to this edition illuminates the current discussion with documentation, including the Preface to the Vatican Gradual and the Last Will and Testament written by Dom Eugene Cardine.

Book Synopsis Studies in Gregorian Chant by : Ruth Steiner
Download or read book Studies in Gregorian Chant written by Ruth Steiner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1999 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manuscript sources and the diversity of the musical traditions they preserve form the focus of this collection of eighteen essays on Gregorian Chant. Ruth Steiner investigates chants of various types: invitatory tones and antiphons, responsories and prosulae, Mass chants and chants of the Divine Office. In one of the studies here, she examines the collection of chants sung in the Divine Office at Cluny for the feast of St Benedict, telling how they were incorporated into a narrative describing the theft of the relics of St Benedict from the Abbey of Montecassino by monks from France. In another, she examines chants composed on texts taken from the parable of the Talents, linking their use to the ways in which ideals of stewardship have been presented in ancient and modern times. Numerous illustrations showing pages from chant manuscripts are included.
