Book excerpt: I am a Green County, Kentucky native, born on Locust Grove Road in 1936. Our family, (mom, dad and I) moved to Greensburg in 1942 and established a residence on Henry Street where I resided until 1954 when I graduated from high school and left to go to college. The stories relayed here represent the memories and events related to my youth on Henry Street. All events are true and derived from memory supplemented by facts as recorded in various documents. I write them to preserve the memories of my youth, pass them on to my family and others so they may reminisce of a quality of life gone by and provide for those who did not live in the era a history of the times and conditions of Henry Street during the 1950’s. In retrospect, I do wish those times were still existent.

Nail could not have grown up in a better place than St. Paul, Indiana. Born in 1923, the youngest of seven children, he was exposed to story lines even before he started working as a young boy in his fathers dry goods store, which was something of a central marketplace for the greater St. Paul area. The stories chronicled here will no doubt be of particular interest to the Nail family and to St. Paul, but if you enjoy reading family-oriented, small-town USA folklore, youll be delighted by these rich stories and vignettes.

Book excerpt: In the aftermath of the Civil War, Republicans and Democrats who advocated conflicting visions of American citizenship could agree on one thing: the rhetorical power of Abraham Lincoln’s life. This volume examines the debates over his legacy and their impact on America’s future. In the thirty-five years following Lincoln’s assassination, acquaintances of Lincoln published their memories of him in newspapers, biographies, and edited collections in order to gain fame, promote partisan aims, champion his hardscrabble past and exalted rise, and define his legacy. Shawn Parry-Giles and David Kaufer explore how style, class, and character affected these reminiscences. They also analyze the ways people used these writings to reinforce their beliefs about citizenship and presidential leadership in the United States, with specific attention to the fissure between republicanism and democracy that still exists today. Their study employs rhetorical and corpus research methods to assess more than five hundred reminiscences. A novel look at how memories of Lincoln became an important form of political rhetoric, this book sheds light on how divergent schools of U.S. political thought came to recruit Lincoln as their standard-bearer.

This meticulous selection of the firsthand accounts, memoirs and diaries is specially comprised for Civil War enthusiasts and all people curious about the personal accounts and true life stories of the unknown soldiers, the well known commanders, politicians, nurses and civilians amidst the war. First published ten years after the end of the Civil War, "Memoirs of General W. T. Sherman" were among the first memoirs written by one of the prominent Civil War generals. The memoirs caused a lot of controversy, especially because of the author's unfair treatment of General Grant. General Sherman replied to his critics: "...any witness who may disagree with me should publish his own version of facts in the truthful narration of which he is interested."

It is not a scholarly treatise, but the record of one person's attempt to understand what lies beyond the physical. From another point of view, the book can be seen as a comment on the gods of organized religion, and a project to pose a metaphysical alternative.
