Book excerpt: Changes to ice sheet surface mass balance (SMB) are going to play a significant role in future sea level rise (SLR), particularly for the Greenland ice sheet. The Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) found that Greenland ice sheet (GIS) response to changes in SMB is expected to contribute 9 ± 4 cm to sea level by 2100 (Fettweis et al 2013), though other estimates suggest the possibility of an even larger response. Modern ice sheet geometry and surface velocities are common metrics for determining a model's predictability of future climate. However, care must be taken to robustly quantify prediction uncertainty because errors in boundary conditions such as SMB can be compensated by (and therefore practically inseparable from) errors in other aspects of the model, complicating calculations of total uncertainty. We find that SMB calculated using the Community Earth System Model (CESM) differs from established standards due to errors in the CESM SMB boundary condition. During the long ice sheet initialization process, small SMB errors such as these have an opportunity to amplify into larger uncertainties in GIS sensitivity to climate change. These uncertainties manifest themselves in ice sheet surface geometry changes, ice mass loss, and subsequent SLR. While any bias in SMB is not desirable, it is not yet clear how sensitive SLR projections are to boundary condition forcing errors. We explore several levels of SMB forcing bias in order to analyze their influence on future SLR. We evaluate ensembles of ice sheets forced by 4 different levels of SMB forcing error, covering a range of errors similar to SMB biases between CESM and RACMO SMB. We find that GIS SMB biases on the order of 1 m/yr result in 7.8 ± 3.4 cm SLR between 1850 and 2100, corresponding to 100% uncertainty at the 2[sigma] level. However, we find unexpected feedbacks between SMB and surface geometry in the northern GIS. We propose that the use of elevation classes may be incorrectly altering the feedback mechanisms in that part of the ice sheet.

On smaller time scales, the effect of snow cover and sea ice on the atmospheric circulation is of concern for long-range weather forecasting. Thinking in decades or centuries, the effect of a C02 climatic warming on the present-day ice sheets, and the resulting changes in global sea level, has drawn a lot of attention. In particular, the dynamics of marine ice sheets (ice sheets on a bed that would be below sea level after removal of ice and full isostatic rebound) is a subject of continuous research. This interest stems from the fact that the West Antarctic Ice Sheet is a marine ice sheet which, according to some workers, may be close to a complete collapse. The Pleistocene ice ages, or glacial cycles, are best characterized by total ice volume on earth, indicating that on 4 5 large time scales (10 to 10 yr) ice sheets are a dominant component of the climate system. The enormous amount of paleoclimatic information obtained from deep-sea sediments in the last few decades has led to a complete revival of iriterest in the physical aspects of the Pleistocene climatic evolution.

Sea-level rise poses enormous risks to the valuable infrastructure, development, and wetlands that line much of the 1,600 mile shoreline of California, Oregon, and Washington. As those states seek to incorporate projections of sea-level rise into coastal planning, they asked the National Research Council to make independent projections of sea-level rise along their coasts for the years 2030, 2050, and 2100, taking into account regional factors that affect sea level. Sea-Level Rise for the Coasts of California, Oregon, and Washington: Past, Present, and Future explains that sea level along the U.S. west coast is affected by a number of factors. These include: climate patterns such as the El Niño, effects from the melting of modern and ancient ice sheets, and geologic processes, such as plate tectonics. Regional projections for California, Oregon, and Washington show a sharp distinction at Cape Mendocino in northern California. South of that point, sea-level rise is expected to be very close to global projections. However, projections are lower north of Cape Mendocino because the land is being pushed upward as the ocean plate moves under the continental plate along the Cascadia Subduction Zone. However, an earthquake magnitude 8 or larger, which occurs in the region every few hundred to 1,000 years, would cause the land to drop and sea level to suddenly rise.

Book excerpt: Due to the potentially wide-reaching impacts on climate and sea-level change of a declining Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS), the mass balance of the past decade has caused concern that the ice sheet is reacting to increased temperatures of the industrial era and that the ice sheet is in the initial stages of deglaciation. Global mean sea-level has been rising at a rate of 1.8 +/- 0.5 mm/yr over the past 50 years (Bindoff et al. 2007), and this has accelerated to 3.1 +/-0.1mm/yr (Cazenave et al., 2008) over the past decade. This study shows that although the surface mass balance of the GrIS can react quickly to changes in temperature, overall the ice sheet is in near balance over the period 1866-2005. During 1866-2005, the contribution from the GrIS to eustatic sea-level change is not larger than the error attached to current estimates of global mean sea-level rise. A novel type of relative sea-level data gathered from salt marshes in the south west of Greenland cover the period from ~1200 to 1800AD and show that a major slowdown in local sea-level rise from ~3mm/yr to ~0mm/yr occurred around 1500-1600 AD, with no significant departure from a 0mm/yr trend thereafter. Large contributions to sea-level change from steric changes and cryospheric sources outside of Greenland are ruled out as major drivers of this deceleration in sea-level fall. Modelling results indicate that the slowdown in relative sea-level is most likely due to the combined contribution of dynamic-related ice loss from Jakobshavn Isbrae and a delayed earth response to mass loss during a period of elevated temperatures from ~1000-1500AD. When considering the saltmarsh sea-level data for the 20th century within the context of the complete time series, the magnitude of ice loss in west Greenland for the past decade does not appear to be anomalous. This analysis suggests that similar mass loss has been sustained for several centuries prior to 1500AD.
