Book excerpt: Greenhouse studies were conducted using soil and solution cultures to: (i) determine the detrimetal effects of manganese on growth and grain yield of soybeans; (ii) determine the variation of manganese in soybean leaves; (iii) determine the critical levels of manganese in the plant; (iv) measure the effect of flooding and of silicon on growth and manganese concentrations in Hill soybeans; and (v) evaluate the differential response of three soybean cultivars to manganese levels. Hill soybeans were grown with six levels of applied manganese ranging from 0 to 80 ppm. Reduction in vegetative growth was observed when the manganese concentration in the youngest fully mature leaf exceeded around 200 ppm. Seed yields appeared to be less sensitive to high levels of manganese than top growth. Manganese concentrations decreased from bottom to of the plant, and for a given trifoliolate, manganese decreased with time. Hill soybeans were flooded for on week and manganese in the leaves immediately doubled, decreasing the plant growth. Seven weeks after draining, trifoliolates that developed immediately after flooding were still high in manganese while the manganese concentration in the youngest trifoliolates was similar to that found in the leaves of the unflooded plants. This reflects the immobility of manganese in the plant. The addition of silicon improved slightly the appearance of Hill soybeans at toxic levels of manganese, but failed to improve growth. Susceptibility of soybean cultivars to both manganese deficiency ...

Book excerpt: The conversion of weed control methods from conventional herbicide applications to the use of a single herbicide (glyphosate) has created new research opportunities in both crop and soil science. Concerns have arisen with respect to soil bioavailability of manganese (Mn) and potential complexation in glyphosate-resistant crops. Both greenhouse and field studies were conducted in the spring and summer of 2011 to investigate whether glyphosate reduced soybean uptake of Mn. Each experiment used soil from the James C. Hageman Sustainable Agriculture and Research Extension Center (SAREC) near Lingle, WY. Each trial lasted approximately 10 weeks, and harvested plants were subjected to tissue Mn analysis, biomass production, chlorophyll concentration and seed yield. Laboratory experiments were performed to examine soil solution sorption chemistry of Mn, glyphosate, and the Mn-glyphosate complex. In separate experiments, total soil Mn, bioavailable fraction, and labile concentrations were analyzed to evaluate soil solution dynamics both separately and in conjunction with the herbicide. Glyphosate rates generally proved to be insignificant in complexing Mn and causing plant deficiencies. Manganese tissue concentration, seed yield, biomass production and chlorophyll ratings showed no treatment differences. Significance was primarily found between varieties. Both the greenhouse experiment and field trials had a late-maturing variety (of the varieties randomly chosen for each trial), which consistently demonstrated poor growth, chlorophyll concentration, and decreased seed yield as opposed to the other varieties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of micronutrients to increase yields has become more popular with increased commodity prices and higher yielding crops. Two studies were completed evaluating secondary and micronutrient for soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum). The objective of the first study was to evaluate the response of soybean, under a double crop system after wheat, to soil-and foliar-applied macro and micronutrients. Macronutrients (N, P, K) were applied at 22 kg ha−1, micronutrients (Fe, Mn, Zn) were soil applied at 11 kg ha−1 and S was applied at 22 kg ha−1. Plant response parameters were evaluated including changes in nutrient concentration, and seed yield response. Tissue samples were collected at the respective R1 growth stage. Samples were analyzed for the nutrients applied with the fertilizer treatments. Soybean seed yield slightly responded to soil-applied S, Mn, and Zn. When micronutrients were foliar-applied, seed yield was significantly decreased. The second study evaluated the application of S and micronutrients to winter wheat. The objectives were to evaluate the wheat response to sulfur and micronutrient fertilization and evaluate soil testing and tissue analysis as diagnostic tools. Fertilizer treatments consisted of sulfur, iron, manganese, zinc, boron, copper. All of the micronutrients were sulfate-based products and the sulfur treatments were applied as gypsum. Fertilizer treatments were applied as topdress in early spring. Soil samples were collected before fertilizer application and after harvest. Flag leaf samples were collected and analyzed for the nutrients applied with the fertilizer treatments. Significant increases in tissue concentration were observed when Zn, B, and S were applied. Significant increases in soil test Zn, Cu, B, and S were observed compared to the control treatment. Despite the increases in soil test concentration across locations, no significant increases in yield by any of the nutrients or combination of nutrients were observed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sixty years ago at the Waite Agricultural Research Institute, G. Samuel, a plant pathologist, and C. S. Piper, a chemist, published their conclusion that the cause of roadside take-all, a disease of oats, was manganese deficiency. This report, together with the concurrent and independent studies of W. M. Carne in Western Australia were the first records of manganese deficiency in Australia and came only six years after McHargue's paper which is generally accepted as the final proof of the essentiality of this element. There must have been a few doubts for some people at the time, however, as the CAB publication, 'The Minor Elements of the Soil' (1940) expressed the view that further evidence to this effect was provided by Samuel and Piper. Their historic contributions are recognised by the International Symposium on Manganese in Soils and Plants as it meets on the site of their early labours to celebrate the 60th anniversary. This year Australians also acknowledge 200 years of European settlement in this country and so the Symposium is both a Bicentennial and a diamond jubilee event which recognises the impact of trace elements on agricultural development in Australia. In a broader sense, a symposium such as this celebrates, as it reviews, the efforts of all who over the ages have contributed to our knowledge of manganese in soils and plants.
