Unfortunately, many of these highland fisheries are impractical to access. But thanks to veteran fishing guide and writer Phil Tereyla, over 60 mountain lakes in Colorado that are under three miles to access in all corners of the state are now fully outlined and covered in this wonderful new flyfishing guidebook, the Flyfisher's Guide to Colorado's Easy Access Mountain Lakes (Wilderness Adventures Press, 2021). Difficulty to access does not equate to quality fishing; many of Colorado's easy-access alpine gems host fantastic fishing for large trout, including lots of drive-to lakes and reservoirs. Most of these lakes also have the same signature scenery and solitude that has made Colorado so popular for fishing and otherwise. Tereyla shows us where to catch all three subspecies of native cutthroat trout (greenback, Colorado River, and Rio Grande), arctic grayling, big brown trout, lake trout, rainbow trout, cuttbows, splake, tiger trout, tiger muskie, and more. He also covers tributary streams, inlets and outlets, the right times to pursue these awesome fish, and the flies that work. This book is perfect for families, aging and disabled anglers, and those who would rather spend their day casting to large trout than hiking. It also makes a great gift for the angler who has it all. Don't miss this opportunity to indulge in all that Colorado's alpine lakes have to offer! Pick up your copy today!

Author of House Witness, 2019 Edgar Award Finalist for Best Novel There has been an assassination attempt on the president. He is only wounded—but his best friend and a Secret Service Agent have been killed. As it turns out, the attack wasn’t without warning. Gen. Andrew Banks, Secretary of Homeland Security, received a note that the president was in danger, and even more alarming, that Secret Service agents guarding the president had been compromised. General Banks is reluctant to tell the FBI about the note, partly for self-serving political reasons, and partly because he doesn’t want to damage the Secret Service’s reputation based on something that might very well be a hoax. So he requests help from his friend, Speaker Mahoney, and Mahoney assigns his man Joe DeMarco, who must untangle the truth behind the tragedy—and assess the danger . . . “[A] wonderfully complex plot, sardonic humor, and memorable characters.” —The Baltimore Sun “Lawson’s debut [is] in a league by itself . . . This is high-level entertainment.” —Publishers Weekly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This newly revised and expanded edition of Howard Hughes chronicles the life and legacies of one of the most intriguing and accomplished Americans of the twentieth century. Hughes, born into wealth thanks to his father’s innovative drill bit that transformed the oil industry, put his inheritance to work in multiple ways, from producing big-budget Hollywood movies to building the world’s fastest and largest airplanes. Hughes set air speed records and traveled around the world in record time, earning ticker-tape parades in three cities in 1938. Later, he moved to Las Vegas and invested heavily in casinos. He bought seven resorts, in each case helping to loosen organized crime’s grip on Nevada’s lifeblood industry. Although the public viewed Hughes as a heroic and independent-minded trailblazer, behind closed doors he suffered from germophobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and an addiction to painkillers. He became paranoid and reclusive, surrounding himself with a small cadre of loyal caretakers. As executives battled each other over his empire, Hughes’ physical and mental health deteriorated to the point where he lost control of his business affairs. This second edition includes more insider details on Hughes’ personal interactions with actresses, journalists, and employees. New chapters provide insights into Hughes’s involvement with the mob, his ownership and struggles as the majority shareholder of TWA and the wide-ranging activities of Hughes Aircraft Company, Hughes’s critical role in the Glomar Explorer CIA project (a deep-sea drillship platform built to recover the Soviet submarine K-129), and more. Based on in-depth interviews with individuals who knew and worked with Hughes, this fascinating biography provides a colorful and comprehensive look at Hughes—from his life and career to his final years and lasting influence. This penetrating depiction of the man behind the curtain demonstrates Hughes’s legacy, and enduring impact on popular culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On September 4, 1915, hundreds of people gathered in Estes Park, Colorado, to celebrate the creation of Rocky Mountain National Park. This new nature preserve held the promise of peace, solitude, and rapture that many city dwellers craved. As Jerry Frank demonstrates, however, the park is much more than a lovely place. Rocky Mountain National Park was a keystone in broader efforts to create the National Park Service, and its history tells us a great deal about Colorado, tourism, and ecology in the American West. To Frank, the tensions between tourism and ecology have played out across a natural stage that is anything but passive. At nearly every turn the National Park Service found itself face-to-face with an environment that was difficult to anticipate—and impossible to control. Frank first takes readers back to the late nineteenth century, when Colorado boosters—already touting the Rocky Mountains’ restorative power for lung patients—set out to attract more tourists and generate revenue for the state. He then describes how an ecological perspective came to Rocky in fits and starts, offering a new way of imagining the park that did not sit comfortably with an entrenched management paradigm devoted to visitor recreation and comfort. Frank examines a wide range of popular activities including driving, hiking, skiing, fishing, and wildlife viewing to consider how they have impacted the park’s flora and fauna, often leaving widespread transformation in their wake. He subjects the decisions of park officials to close but evenhanded scrutiny, showing how in their zeal to return the park to what they understood as its natural state, they have tinkered with its features—sometimes with less than desirable results. Today’s Rocky Mountain National Park serves both competing visions, maintaining accessible roads and vistas for the convenience of tourists while guarding its backcountry to preserve ecological values. As the park prepares to celebrate its centennial, Frank’s book advances our understanding of its past while also providing an important touchstone for addressing its problems in the present and future.
