Book Synopsis Modern Greek in Diaspora by : Angeliki Alvanoudi
Download or read book Modern Greek in Diaspora written by Angeliki Alvanoudi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-15 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an in-depth fieldwork-based study of the Greek language spoken by immigrants in Cairns, Far North Queensland, Australia. The study analyzes language contact-induced changes and code switching patterns, by integrating perspectives from contact linguistics and interactional approaches to language use and code switching. Lexical and pragmatic borrowing, code mixing, discourse-related and participant-related code switching, and factors promoting language maintenance are among the topics covered in the book. The study brings to light original data from a speech community that has received no attention in the literature and sheds light on the variation of Greek spoken in diaspora. It will appeal across disciplines to scholars and students in linguistics, anthropology, sociology, and migration studies.
Download or read book Body written by Paula Gooder and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word spirituality is notoriously difficult to define. It is often used in a vague way to refer to the inner relationship between the self and God. The implication is that people only relate to God with their “inner” being (soul/spirit) and not with any other part of who they are. There is a lurking influence of Neoplatonism within Christian thinking that tends to assume that the material is bad and the spiritual good, that there is a gaping hole between our inner and our outer selves and that the proper location of devotion is our inner being. There is a further assumption that, especially in the writings of Paul, the soul is to be placed in the “good” category while opposite it, in the “bad” category, is the body—leaving the question of what is meant by heart and mind largely ignored. Paula Gooder here explores the meaning of six key concepts in the Bible, especially in the writings of Paul, before moving on to explore what Paul intended by the contrasts he drew, and what implications this all has for the way we think and speak about our spirituality today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St George's Day has become a topic of debate as more and more organizations promote celebrations on 23 April and more people wave the flag of St George to proclaim their allegiance and identity. But who was St George? How did this Near Eastern martyr become England's patron saint and an icon of English culture? And what is his relevance for today's secular, multicultural England? New research reveals that from the third century St George was revered as a healer, protector of women and the poor and patron of agriculture and metal-working more than a military dragon-slayer. Discover the origin of the cross of St George and the roles of Richard I, Edward III and Henry VIII in making St George the patron saint of England. With a foreword by Professor Emeritus Dan Brown, this richly-illustrated celebration of English culture shows how St George can be reinterpreted for our times while remaining true to our English heritage. St George can be enlisted in the cause of ecology, the campaign against FGM, and the fight to end modern slavery and resettle refugees. English yet international, revered both by Christians and Muslims, St George is a multicultural figure who symbolizes universal values.

It would not be a problem-free church, but it would be a healthy church where pastors are free to focus on their biblical responsibilities. Although younger women need the guidance of godly older women more than ever, older women remain the most untapped resource in the church today. Some feel dispensable, undervalued, or overlooked. Many simply don’t understand the role God calls them to have with younger women, or know how to fulfill it. Getting Back on Track is an invitation to discover from Scripture what the role of the biblical mentor is and how God wants to use older women to help move younger women toward maturity in Christ. It is solidly grounded in Scripture from beginning to end and is written for the older woman, church leader, or younger woman who aspires to be a godly older woman someday.
