Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This complete history of Greece documents ancient times to the present, giving specific attention to its emergence as a modern European nation after the destruction, disease, and death Greece suffered during World War II and the subsequent civil war. Modern Greece started as a monarchy in 1832, with just a fraction of the land it now encompasses. The nation of Greece finally forged its identity in the 19th and 20th centuries after emerging from 400 years of Ottoman domination. This book traces the development of Greece from the Minoan civilization of Crete to modern times, telling the story of how Greece added territory and experienced fierce growing pains—including coups, dictatorships, depressions, enormous influxes of immigrants, and wars—before evolving into today's modern democratic state. The History of Greece provides both an overview of Greece's early history as well as an examination of the difficulties that emerged in 2009 and 2010, such as its recent financial problems and social unrest. Quotes from Greek politicians, scholars, poets, and ordinary citizens are included to communicate Greece's national character.

C. 146 Histories of Greece is the hope that the writer has been able so to state the old story - modified by recent studies and discoveries - as to suit the needs or tastes of certain classes of readers and students. In a book of this size it is impossible not to curtail or omit much that is interesting and even important. The aim of the writer, in selecting the topics to be dwelt upon, has been to choose those which best illus trate the political life and intellectual activities of the Greeks wherever they lived, not only in Greece proper, but in the larger Greece of Italy, Sicily, and Asia. To do this at all adequately in so short a space it was often necessary to reduce details as to particular cities and districts to a very low standard. The writer has wished to treat Greek History in a wide Hellenic spirit, but in spite of good resolutions he has found it as impossible, as others seem to have done, to avoid giving Athens the lion's share in the story. Book Synopsis A History of Greece by : William Smith

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Greece: From the Earliest Times to the Roman Conquest, With Supplementary Chapters The works of Dr. William Smith, on Classical Biography, Antiquities, and Geography, are so well known in the United States, that any commendation of them would be superfluous in this place. The History of Greece published by him in 1854 is marked by excellences similar to those of his other books, and is, beyond all question, the best summary in our language of the ancient history of that country, for the use of schools and colleges. The editor of the present American republication has carefully revised the text, and corrected a number of misprints which escaped the author in the original English edition. In one place, a passage of some length is inadvertently repeated in nearly identical terms; the repetition, in this edition, has of course been omitted. In the Chronological Table, the heading of the third book is omitted; that omission has been supplied. An attempt has been made to introduce a greater degree of uniformity in the spelling of the classical names. The example of Grote and other high authorities in English literature is now beginning to be followed, and English usage, in this respect, is gradually conforming itself to that which has been established among the scholars of Germany. Still I have not ventured to carry out the principle in a causes, having limited myself generally to those in which an opposite practice has not been irrevocably fixed. With regard to the Modern Greek names, I have followed the orthography of the Greek rather than of any other language.
