Book excerpt: Expertise in electrolyte systems has become increasingly important in traditional CPI operations, as well as in oil/gas exploration and production. This book is the source for predicting electrolyte systems behavior, an indispensable "do-it-yourself" guide, with a blueprint for formulating predictive mathematical electrolyte models, recommended tabular values to use in these models, and annotated bibliographies. The final chapter is a general recipe for formulating complete predictive models for electrolytes, along with a series of worked illustrative examples. It can serve as a useful research and application tool for the practicing process engineer, and as a textbook for the chemical engineering student.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rare earth elements (REE) are used extensively in high-tech industry. However, REE mineral resources in the U.S. are limited, making their supply vulnerable. Coal ash as an abundant waste material from coal power plants contains high content in heavy REE, making it a promising alternative resource of REE. Therefore, the first objective of this thesis is to design, simulate and validate a process for REE production from coal ash. The process involves a physical enrichment stage and a chemical enrichment stage. A steady-state model of a continuous ash processing plant is developed in ASPEN Plus based on laboratory-scale study to examine the production capacity, the efficiency of REE extraction and the commercial feasibility of the process. One challenge with the model developed based on laboratory data is the lack of generality in terms of material properties and their impact on the accuracy of scaling up and optimizing separation process. A fundamental thermodynamic model can improve simulation accuracy in areas unexplored by experiments. A challenge in modeling the proposed process merely based on physics laws is to estimate the behavior of extracting electrolyte mixtures in nitric acid solution by tributyl phosphate in the chemical enrichment stage. The extraction behavior is governed by activity of each component and respective equilibrium constants. However, even for the simple case of REE nitrate solutions, activity coefficient models are missing. Therefore, the second objective of this thesis is to develop thermodynamically consistent and accurate models for concentrated, multi-electrolyte and mixed-solvent solutions. The first goal of this objective is to study the assumptions and ensemble where the Debye-Hückel theory was developed and show rigorous extensions of the theory to Lewis-Randall ensemble. These considerations are extended to the Born equation for mixed-solvent solutions. Then, a refined electrolyte-NRTL model is presented with inclusion of hydration chemistry and the Debye-Hückel theory in the Lewis-Randall ensemble. Lastly, the proposed model augmented with the consideration of partial dissociation and localized hydrolysis is applied to describe acid, base and REE nitrate solutions. The models are evaluated on extensive databases with considerable success, showing a great potential for simulating the proposed REE extraction process.

Book excerpt: This project is divided into method experimental measurements, theoretical development, and geochemical applications. We have completed experimental volumetric measurements on aqueous solutions of CO2 H2S, CH4, NH3 and B(OH)3 at 25 to 432°C and 280 and 350 bar. A vibrating tube densitometer that allows density measurements near bubble point and also measures the bubble pressure was developed and used to measure densities and bubble pressures of aqueous Co2. Heat capacity measurements should be completed by the end of the grant period. Simulations of models for methane in water at temperatures to 1000°C are in progress. In order to facilitate these free energy calculations the possible errors associated with the calculations have been explored in two papers (Wood, 1991; Wood et al., 1991) and methods of controlling and estimating these errors have been developed. Applications of the new data to geochemical processes is now possible. Efforts have focussed on extracting equilibrium constants for carbonic acid dissociation at supercritical condition from published experiments on mineral equilibria in H20-CO2 fluids (Boehlke and Shock, 1990; and in prep.). As a result, estimates of pKa for carbonic acid are now available at temperatures from 300 to 750°C and pressures from 1 to 7 kilobars. They will be combined with {bar V}{sup {degree}} and {bar C}p{sup {degree}} data for CO2(aq) to improve geochemical calculations.

Book excerpt: Oscarson and coworkers2, 3 modified the AP model for NaCl solutions by adding a term accounting for the change in Helmholtz energy as a result of aqueous dissociation reactions. This new model, called the RI model, is more accurate than the AP model at conditions where the NaCl dissociates more fully into ions.

Book excerpt: At high temperatures, the properties of aqueous electrolyte systems differ markedly from those at 25°C. For mixed-electrolyte dilute solutions at high temperatures, the degree of ion-association is sufficiently large that the association equilibrium must be incorporated in any model describing the solutions. These association reactions usually do not occur to a measurable extent at room temperature. Oscarson and co-workers have designed a correlation model based on the excess Gibbs energy which can correlate log K and dilH values as well as the heats of dilution for aqueous electrolyte systems as a function of temperature (T) and ionic strength (I) from 275 to 350°C. Use of calorimetric data to develop the model has been shown to be more accurate than using dilH values from the variation of log K with temperature because one less differentiation with respect to temperature is required.
