Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this is a guide which provides easy access to a fairly complete range of the long poetry written in the Romantic and Victorian periods: epics, narrative poems, verse-novels and other work of over a certain length. The format provides title, author, length of work and prosodic description. Texts are then summarized according to the internal divisions. Each poem is accompanied by an objective summary and the poems as a whole are preceded by an introduction which advances a particular argument as to why the nineteenth century was so fascinated with the length that was the ultimate aesthetic rationale for the long poem.

Book excerpt: It is widely considered to be amongst his finest poems and was influential in 19th century literature. The poem is in Spenserian stanzas. The title comes from the day (or evening) before the feast of Saint Agnes (or St. Agnes' Eve). St. Agnes, the patron saint of virgins, died a martyr in 4th century Rome. The eve falls on January 20th; the feast day on the 21st. The divinations referred to by Keats in this poem are referred to by John Aubrey in his Miscellanies (1696) as being associated with St. Agnes' night. Keats based his poem on the superstition that a girl could see her future husband in a dream if she performed certain rites on the eve of St. Agnes; that is she would go to bed without any supper, undress herself so that she was completely naked and lie on her bed with her hands under the pillow and looking up to the heavens and not to look behind. Then the proposed husband would appear in her dream, kiss her, and feast with her. John Keats (1795–1821) was an English Romantic poet. The poetry of Keats is characterized by sensual imagery, most notably in the series of odes. Today his poems and letters are some of the most popular and most analyzed in English literature.

Book excerpt: This study provides detailed and wide-ranging accounts of all the varieties of long poem - epic, romance, verse-novel and sequences - published in the romantic and Victorian periods. Writers in the 19th century saw these grand poetic projects as their greatest achievements and Adam Roberts's summaries and critical accounts of these seek to render them accessible to the modern student, researcher and general reader. From famous works (The Prelude, In Memoriam, The Ring and the Book) to lesser-known works (Erasmus Darwin's The Lovers of the Plants or Edward Lytton's King Poppy: A Story Without an End), this study provides a detailed book-by-book precis, contextual information, biographical entries on authors and critical entries on the categories of long poem. A critical introduction examines why it was that the long poem was so central to romantic and Victorian art and why epic is still one of the weightiest modes of writing even today.

Book excerpt: Feelings come alive through the words of the Romantic poets. Romanticism gained traction in the late 1700s as writers moved away from the intellectualism of the Enlightenment and toward more emotional and natural themes. The major works of the movement’s six most famous poets—William Wordsworth, George Gordon Byron, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, John Keats, and William Blake—are represented in this handsome Word Cloud Classics volume, The Romantic Poets. One of the largest and most influential artistic movements in history, Romanticism valued intuition and pastoralism, and its themes are well represented in the verse of its stars.

Book excerpt: THREE ROMANTIC POETS: EMILY BRONTE, JOHN KEATS, PERCY BYSSHE SHELLEY SELECTED POEMS Edited and introduced by L.M. Poole Three great Romantics poets are featured in this anthology - Percy Bysshe Shelley, John Keats and Emily Bronte. The book includes all of their famous poems. Emily Bronte as a poet is still neglected today. Her novel Wuthering Heights, however, remains one of the great English novels. It continues to sell, continues to be adapted for radio, theatre, film and television, continues to inspire readers and be cited by critics. The wind whistling through the heather in Winter is indeed the atmosphere of Wuthering Heights, and also of Bronte's poetry. In poem after poem we find loving evocations of the moors: we hear of 'the breezy moor' (in "The starry night shall tidings bring"), the 'flowerless moors' (in "How still, how happy! Those are words"), and of 'the moors where the linnet was trilling/ Its song on the old granite stone' (in "Loud without the wind was roaring," the most powerful of Bronte's moor-poems). John Keats is one of the few British poets who is truly ecstatic andwild. Despite the overly-ornate language, the often awkwardphrases ('made sweet moan' in 'La Belle Dame Sans Merci'), despite the Romantic indulgences and the sometimes chauvinist views, theoften over-simplification of natural and human processes andexperiences, and despite the tendency to gush and exaggerate, Keats is one of the few poets who write in English who is truly furious and shamanic. This book gathers the most potent passages from John Keats together, including the famous 'Odes', the sonnets, the luxuriously sensuous 'Eve of St Agnes', the mysterious and atmospheric 'La Belle Dame Sans Merci', and extracts from 'Lamia', Endymion and Hyperion. Percy Shelley is one of the major British poets, seen by many people as the breathless, hyper-lyrical, angelic yet anarchic poet of the Romantic era, out-doing Lord Byron and John Keats in terms of sheer brilliance. His personality, as with Keats and Byron, is a crucial component in the Shelley legend. Shelley has a cult built up around him. The book includes a selection of Shelley's odes, hymns and paeans of England's breathless, angelic, anarchic poet. Famous poems, such as 'Ode to the West Wind' and 'The Cloud', are set beside extracts from Prometheus Unbound and Epipsychidion. With an introduction and bibliography for each poet. Plus a portrait gallery for each poet. www.crmoon.com."

Book excerpt: Endymion: A Poetic Romance John Keats In the Spring of 1817, John Keats, then still a little-known poet, set out to write at least forty lines of poetry every day. The result was Endymion. This retelling of the Greek myth has long been celebrated as one of Keats' breakthrough poems, and though throughout the poem it is clear that some days were filled with inspiration, and others were not, the poem's four books filled with adventure and romance remain a great work of one of the 19th century's greatest poets. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This wonderfully illustrated book retells a great, American love-story. It is a dramatized portrayal of the Mayflower Pilgrims, being part fact and part fiction. (Several years of events are condensed and poetically rearranged for dramatic effect.) However, the book is not a novel or a narrative history. Rather, it is presented as an ancient, heroic legend -- in poetic verse, a la Homer's Odyssey or Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. It is an elegant form of historical fiction. The book celebrates love, friendship, family, and a sacred American Dream. Historic portraits by Rembrandt and other renown artists fill its pages. Romantics of all ages will treasure the tale's graceful, poetic freeverse; a beautiful young woman of the Pilgrim era, circa 1650, adorns the book's cover. This is the perfect gift-book, a holiday favorite for both Thanksgiving, the Pilgrim holiday, and Valentine's Day, the day for lovers. Henry Longfellow, the celebrated poet and a great-grandson of the lovers, first told this mesmerizing, Shakespearean ballad about three friends who were Mayflower Pilgrims. They became involved in a tragic love-triangle in the Spring of 1621, six months after arriving in America. Before their personal conflict could be resolved, a fierce Indian war threatened their village. First published in 1858, the saga was a runaway bestseller for decades. However, archaic language gradually obscured the original text, making it a ?lost? tale. Now, David W. Bradford, a Harvard and Yale-educatedscholar, has rewritten the story for a new generation. He restores an exceptionally life-like portrayal of the Mayflower Pilgrims, one of the best ever. This book is must-have for all libraries, the first modern adaptation of Longfellow in more than a century.

Book excerpt: Often identified with its lyric poetry, Romanticism has come to be dismissed by historicists as an ineffectual idealism. By focusing on Romantic narrative, noted humanist Tilottama Rajan takes issue with this identification, as well as with the equation of narrative itself with the governmental apparatus of the Novel. Exploring the role of narrativity in the works of Romantic writers, Rajan also reflects on larger disciplinary issues such as the role of poetry versus prose in an emergent modernity and the place of Romanticism itself in a Victorianized nineteenth century. While engaging both genres, Romantic Narrative responds to the current critical shift from poetry to prose by concentrating, paradoxically, on a poetics of narrative in Romantic prose fiction. Rajan argues that poiesis, as a mode of thinking, is Romanticism’s legacy to an age of prose. She elucidates this thesis through careful readings of Shelley’s Alastor and his Gothic novels, Godwin’s Caleb Williams and St. Leon, Hays’ Memoirs of Emma Courtney, and Wollstonecraft’s The Wrongs of Woman. Rajan, winner of the Keats-Shelley Association's Distinguished Lifetime Award and a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, is one of Romanticism’s leading scholars. Effective, articulate, and readable, Romantic Narrative will appeal to scholars in both nineteenth-century studies and narrative theory.
