Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Hymns of the Middle Ages Was within them, it was quite as certainly a reality toward which they strove diligently, for which they longed greatly, and in which they implicitly believed. This may explain the essentially impersonal atti tude even in the later, strongly emotional poetry of which The Jubilee Rhythm of Bernard of Clairvaux is an example. Even in this the personal element is quite lost in the description of the visions vouchsafed to the blessed. It is a quality seem ingly at variance with adher ence to a system in which the saving of one's own soul is thefirst care, yet no analysis of self turns these writers from their celestial themes. There is no place in their minds for ih dividual moods, such as color some modern devotional verse and make religion appear a salve for the disappointed rather than an inspiration for the hero. The thoughts of the mediaeval hymn-writers were fixed on the facts of their belief and on the theories of their theology, and life itself was in those days too precari ous to leave room for fine questionings as to its lesser incidents of pleasure or of pain. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first mention of Christian Latin hymns by a known author occurs in the writings of St. Jerome who states that Hilary, Bishop of Poitiers (c. 310-366), a noted author of commentaries and theological works, wrote a Liber Hymnorum. This collection has never been recovered in its entirety. Hilary’s priority as a hymn writer is attested by Isidore of Seville (d. 636) who says: Hilary, however, Bishop of Poitiers in Gaul, a man of unusual eloquence, was the first prominent hymn writer. More important than his prior claim is the motive which actuated him, the defense of the Trinitarian doctrine, to which he was aroused by his controversy with the Arians. A period of four years as an exile in Phrygia for which his theological opponents were responsible, made him familiar with the use of hymns in the oriental church to promote the Arian heresy. Hilary wrested a sword, so to speak, from his adversaries and carried to the west the hymn, now a weapon of the orthodox. His authentic extant hymns, three in number, must have been a part of the Liber Hymnorum. Ante saecula qui manens, “O Thou who dost exist before time,” is a hymn of seventy verses in honor of the Trinity; Fefellit saevam verbum factum te, caro, “The Incarnate Word hath deceived thee (Death)” is an Easter hymn; and Adae carnis gloriosae, “In the person of the Heavenly Adam” is a hymn on the theme of the temptation of Jesus. They are ponderous in style and expression and perhaps too lengthy for congregational use since they were destined to be superseded. In addition to these the hymn Hymnum dicat turba fratrum, “Let your hymn be sung, ye faithful,” has been most persistently associated with Hilary’s name. The earliest text occurs in a seventh century manuscript. It is a metrical version of the life of Jesus in seventy-four lines, written in the same meter as that of Adae carnis gloriosae.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Translations of Latin Hymns of the Middle AgesThe following Latin Hymns, selected from the collection published by Dr. March of Lafayette College, undoubtedly possess more than ordinary merit. To have rendered all the Hymns would have unduly swelled the work. The selections have been made so as to present as many authors as could conveniently be embraced within its compass. It will be highly gratifying to me if the translations shall adequately convey the meaning of the originals. Book excerpt: Each volume of the Dictionary of World Biography contains 250 entries on the lives of the individuals who shaped their times and left their mark on world history. This is not a who's who. Instead, each entry provides an in-depth essay on the life and career of the individual concerned. Essays commence with a quick reference section that provides basic facts on the individual's life and achievements. The extended biography places the life and works of the individual within an historical context, and the summary at the end of each essay provides a synopsis of the individual's place in history. All entries conclude with a fully annotated bibliography.
