Book excerpt: Four simple trials concerned with problems of grazing and feeding beef cattle in the Katherine region were carried out between 1956 and 1959. The effects of phosphate supplementation and regular spraying with DDT on liveweight gains of cattle grazing native pasture in the wet season were examined in two successive years. In both seasons, the advantage in liveweight due to phosphate supplementation after 6 months was 26 lb/head. In the first season, with heavy tick infestation, liveweight of regularly sprayed cattle was 90 lb/head greater than that of unsprayed cattle at the end of the period. In the second season, with light tick infestation, the difference was 28 lb/head. The liveweight gains of cattle on native pasture during the wet season under three systems of grazing management were compared in two successive years. In both years, cattle grazing continuously on pasture burned in the previous dry season made greater gains than cattle grazing continuously on unburned pasture ro cattle on a rotational system, the difference averaging 0.32 lb/day over a 6 month period. The liveweight changes of cattle on native pasture during the dry season at three levels of supplementation with the high-protein pulse guar were compared in two successive years. Taking the mean of both seasons, unsupplemented cattle lost weight at 1-10 lb/day over 16 weeks, cattle receiving 2 lb/day of supplement gained weight at 0-41 lb/day, and cattle receiving 4 lb/day of supplement gained at 1-01 lb/day. Two methods of intensive dry-season feeding were compared in two successive years. In the first season, cattle on birdwood grass-Townsville lucerne sown pasture receiving 10 lb/day sorghum grain and 1 lb/dayh peanut meal gained 2-17 lb/day over 16 weeks, while cattle with the same concentrate ration but with sorghum silage ad lib. gained 1-59 lb/day. In the second season, bulrush millet silage was substituted for sorghum silage. The sown pasture plus concentrates group gained 2-14 lb/day over 12 weeks, the silage plus concentrates group 2-06 lb/day.
