Book excerpt: Agriculture in Eastern Europe and Central Asia is diverse, and has great potential to revitalize the economy of the countries in the region via improved productivity (efficiency) and higher total yield for food, fodder and fibre crops. Conservation agriculture can rise to the major challenge of making sustainable intensification of production systems a reality. In order for farmers to transition to appropriate sustainable production systems, the provision of an adequate enabling environment and access to knowledge and services, including extension, mechanization, inputs and market intelligence, are crucial. This Guide is designed to provide coherent technical tools to Farmer Field Schools and extension service facilitators of conservation agriculture. Furthermore, the Guide is suitable for use within universities’ agriculture curricula.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grass in Conservation in the United States As far back as records go into civilization's dawn, grass has been a solid base for agriculture. Through the centuries it has provided most of the forage for livestock feed and cereals for man's own food. In the United States in the past generation grass has gained new eminence as a tool in soil and water con servation. Today it occupies a dual role of production and protection in American agriculture. The withering drought and the financial depression of the 1930's triggered an agricultural revolution that brought forth a new national program to halt soil erosion and protect renewable natural resources. With it new grassland science emerged, and new grasses and legumes for forage grow on nearly half the land area of the United States. A return of about 17 billion dollars annually comes from the livestock and poultry that eat grasses, grains, hay, and silage. On the farms of America before 1930, grass was often looked upon as a resource of minor value. In the South and in the Great Plains, farmers grew mostly clean-tilled row crops and small grains. In most of the country, improved pastures occupied a position of minor importance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grassland farming in Europe was already established during the settlement of the rst farmers together with their domesticated animals after the last ice age. Since then, grassland provides the forage basis to feed ruminant animals for the p- duction of meat and milk. Depending on the ecological conditions and intensity of usage, various plant communities with different species developed, displaying a rich biodiversity. With the introduction of improved crop rotations at the end of the 16th century, grasses and legumes were also grown to an important extent as forage crops on arable land. In the last decades the importance of amenity grasses increased markedly, due to the demand of the society for new usages like landscape protection. Around 1900 interested farmers and academics identi ed the need for gra- land improvement through systematic selection and seed production. This marks the beginning of breeding and research in companies but also at universities and specialized research institutes. Plant collection started with many of the species that are still of importance today. The collected materials were grouped according to the intended use and some type of phenotypic selection was applied. Seed mul- plication of such populations was performed in pure stands and the harvested seed was marketed. Although the vegetative biomass and its quality are of utmost imp- tance in forage crop breeding, it is the seed yield potential which determines the commercial success of a new variety.
