Book excerpt: Book 2 of the "Great Death" series.A Post-Apocalyptic world unlike any other. Instead of banding together or fighting each other, here the survivors find a world with few resources, little trust and no desire to intermingle. Fears of disease prevent survivors from reaching out for help. How does society survive if the survivors won't participate?A follow-up to "Love and Family During the Great Death". It's much less bleak, and reading the first book isn't strictly necessary, so those who couldn't handle the first shouldn't be afraid of this one.Picking up after everyone else has died, David and Alice try to determine who, if anyone has survived, and why they did. The series of plagues they survived proved effective, as society is laid bare, but they realize they must organize the reluctant survivors, as the Great Death isn't finished, and further disasters await.
Book Synopsis The Art of Survival by : Joseph Chikowero
Download or read book The Art of Survival written by Joseph Chikowero and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-25 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Art of Survival: Depictions of Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwean in Crisis offers a fresh, interdisciplinary examination of a period against which development in Zimbabwe is often measured, one epitomized by the severe shortages and runaway inflation of 2008. While journalistic stories of the 1998–2008 era often privilege the reductive stories of woe, defeat and crushed hopes, this volume explores how survival was still possible in those circumstances. The book offers insights into how ordinary Zimbabweans battled the odds by making startling innovations in language use to legitimize new survival strategies, how they weaved new songs and reinterpreted old ones to fight for survival, how social institutions such as churches reinterpreted popular gospel, and how authors, playwrights and dramatists crafted works that acknowledge the unprecedented difficulties and yet find humour, laughter and love in unusual places. This work will appeal to both scholars, who will appreciate the depth of the analysis, and the general reader.
Download or read book Bloodlands written by Timothy Snyder and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of the international bestseller On Tyranny, the definitive history of Hitler’s and Stalin’s politics of mass killing, explaining why Ukraine has been at the center of Western history for the last century. Americans call the Second World War “the Good War.” But before it even began, America’s ally Stalin had killed millions of his own citizens—and kept killing them during and after the war. Before Hitler was defeated, he had murdered six million Jews and nearly as many other Europeans. At war’s end, German and Soviet killing sites fell behind the Iron Curtain, leaving the history of mass killing in darkness. Assiduously researched, deeply humane, and utterly definitive, Bloodlands is a new kind of European history, presenting the mass murders committed by the Nazi and Stalinist regimes as two aspects of a single story. With a new afterword addressing the relevance of these events to the contemporary decline of democracy, Bloodlands is required reading for anyone seeking to understand the central tragedy of modern history and its meaning today.
Book Synopsis Creative Subversions by : Margot Francis
Download or read book Creative Subversions written by Margot Francis and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this richly illustrated book, Margot Francis explores how whiteness and Indigeneity are articulated through four icons of Canadian identity -- the beaver, the railway, the wilderness of Banff National Park, and "Indianness" -- and the contradictory and contested meanings they evoke. These seemingly benign, even kitschy, images, she argues, are haunted by ideas about race, masculinity, and sexuality that circulated during the formative years of Anglo-Canadian nationhood. Juxtaposing these nostalgic images with the work of contemporary Canadian artists, she investigates how everyday objects can be re-imagined to challenge ideas about history, memory, and national identity.

Book Synopsis Your Ultimate Guide to Outdoor and Urban Survival by : J.D. Rockefeller
Download or read book Your Ultimate Guide to Outdoor and Urban Survival written by J.D. Rockefeller and published by J.D. Rockefeller. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There's a lot of misconceptions out there about how urban survival and wilderness survival, camping do or do not fit together. Arguments range from saying wilderness survival skills and camping can help in urban survival situations to saying all you that's needed for long-term urban survival is your survival or camping gear. The truth does, however, lie in between.Regardless you level of experience or the amount of skill, this guide has some great stuff to share about outdoor and urban survival. In both urban and wilderness survival, the most crucial and common factor that determine whether you'll succeed or fail lies in your mindset. The fundamentals of survival are common to urban and wilderness scenarios: shelter, food, security, medical, water, and fire. However there some notable differences. In wilderness or outdoor survival scenarios, it will normally be you or group of people trying to survive off from the land or from what you've been able to carry along. In other words, you can think of a wilderness survival scenario as you vs. the world. A typical character you can identify such situations with is John Rambo where it's basically him vs. the world. Quite often, wilderness survival scenarios take place because there isn't anyone else around. Long-term urban survival, on the other hand, is a totally different situation to this regard. There will be people around you. After being able to keep yourself under control, a crucial factor that will determine your long-term urban survival will be how well you can interact with different people. Are you able to forge relationships and friends? Are you willing to exchange services and or goods with other people? Can you achieve this in such a way that you'll be able to get good deals and still maintain good relationships with those other people in the future? Have your actions been in such a way that people will look for you when they need help? These are some vital attributes and things to consider when looking to survive in an urban setup. Let's get started!

Book Synopsis Grappling 101 by : Bakari Akil II, Ph.D.
Download or read book Grappling 101 written by Bakari Akil II, Ph.D. and published by Academic Group Publishing (BRAII - owner). This book was released on 2017-08-03 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the "Bully Proof" for beginning grapplers. It’ll help you develop a force field to help shield you from making newbie mistakes. The advice in Grappling 101 is information that people will not share with you during instruction or drill, but will tell you at the most inopportune moments. They are pointers that everyone should give you on day one, but end up as sporadic pieces of advice; usually shouted out while someone is handing your ass to you. This is not a handbook that shows you step-by-step sequences that will help you wreak havoc in your gym or on the competition mat. Instead, it is grappling theory. It was written with the intention of keeping you from becoming a victim. Theoretically, if you use the advice in this book it will save you a lot of grief and help you to avoid a lot of needless tapping. The information in Grappling 101 will take months and in some cases years away from time that would normally be spent as a newbie, then as a rookie. It will keep you from making what someone, who is hard on themselves, would describe as stupid or silly mistakes. ***Attention: This book is for beginners. Read this book before you begin grappling! That said; if you have already begun to study submission wrestling then you’ve probably learned what’s in this book the hard way. Yet, it is always good to review the basics, so Grappling 101 can be read by all.
