It focuses on the simulation of deformable models with anisotropic materials, one of the less common approaches in the existing research. Both physically-based and geometrically-based approaches are examined. The authors start with transversely isotropic materials for the simulation of deformable objects with fibrous structures. Next, they introduce a fiber-field incorporated corotational finite element model (CLFEM) that works directly with a constitutive model of transversely isotropic material. A smooth fiber-field is used to establish the local frames for each element. To introduce deformation simulation for orthotropic materials, an orthotropic deformation controlling frame-field is conceptualized and a frame construction tool is developed for users to define the desired material properties. The orthotropic frame-field is coupled with the CLFEM model to complete an orthotropic deformable model. Finally, the authors present an integrated real-time system for animation of skeletal characters with anisotropic tissues. To solve the problems of volume distortion and high computational costs, a strain-based PBD framework for skeletal animation is explained; natural secondary motion of soft tissues is another benefit. Based on the implicit finite element method a multigrid approach for the efficient numerical simulation of elastic materials has been developed. Due to the optimized implementation of the multigrid scheme, 200,000 elements can be simulated at a rate of 10 time steps per second. The approach enables realistic and numerically stable simulation of bodies that are described by tetrahedral or hexahedral grids. It can efficiently simulate heterogeneous bodies-i.e., bodies that are composed of material with varying stiffness-and includes linear as well as non-linear material laws. To visualize deformable bodies, a novel rendering method has been developed on programmable graphics hardware. It includes the efficient rendering of surfaces as well as interior volumetric structures. Both the physical simulation framework and the rendering approach have been integrated into a single simulation support system. Thereby, available communication bandwidths have been efficiently exploited. To enable the use of the system in practical applications, a novel approach for collision detection has been included. This approach allows one to handle geometries that are deformed or even created on the graphical subsystem.

Book excerpt: Computer Animation is a sub-field of computer graphics with an emphasis on the time-dependent description of interested events. It has been used in many disciplines such as entertainment, scientific visualization, industrial design, multimedia, etc. Modeling of deformable objects in a dynamic interaction and/or fracture process has been an active research topic in the past decade. The main objective of this thesis is to provide a new effective approach to address the dynamic interaction and fracture simulation. With respect to the dynamic interaction between deformable objects, this thesis proposes a new semi-explicit local collision response analysis (CRA) algorithm which is better than most of previous approaches in three aspects: computational efficiency, accuracy mid generality. The computational cost of the semi-explicit local CRA algorithm is guaranteed to be O('n') for each time step, which is especially desirable for the collision response analysis of complex systems. With the use of the Lagrange multiplier method, the send-explicit local CPA algorithm avoids shortcomings associated with the penalty method and provides an accurate description of detailed local deformation during a collision process. The generic geometric constraint and the Gauss-Seidel iteration for enforcing the loading constraint such as Coulomb friction law make the semi-explicit local CRA algorithm to be general enough to handle arbitrary oblique collisions. The experimental results indicate that the semi-explicit local CRA approach is capable of capturing all the key features during collision of deformable objects and matches closely with the theoretical solution of a classic collision problem in solid mechanics. In the fracture simulation, a new element-split method is proposed, which has a sounder mechanical basis than previous approaches in computer graphics and is more flexible to accommodate different material fracture criteria such that different failure patterns are obtained acco.

Cloth simulation is no different and is ubiquitous because most virtual characters (hopefully!) wear some sort of clothing. The focus of this book is physics-based cloth simulation. We start by providing background information and discuss a range of applications. This book provides explanations of multiple cloth simulation techniques. More specifically, we start with the most simple explicitly integrated mass-spring model and gradually work our way up to more complex and commonly used implicitly integrated continuum techniques in state-of-the-art implementations. We give an intuitive explanation of the techniques and give additional information on how to efficiently implement them on a computer. This book discusses explicit and implicit integration schemes for cloth simulation modeled with mass-spring systems. In addition to this simple model, we explain the more advanced continuum-inspired cloth model introduced in the seminal work of Baraff and Witkin [1998]. This method is commonly used in industry. We also explain recent work by Liu et al. [2013] that provides a technique to obtain fast simulations. In addition to these simulation approaches, we discuss how cloth simulations can be art directed for stylized animations based on the work of Wojtan et al. [2006]. Controllability is an essential component of a feature animation film production pipeline. We conclude by pointing the reader to more advanced techniques.
