Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1805, a group of citizens from Massachusetts and Connecticut braved treacherous travel conditions to settle a new village in the heart of Ohio. Like the Welsh pioneers who arrived in the area a few years earlier, these industrious New Englanders found abundant natural resources to sustain themselves as they erected buildings, planted crops, and platted a town. The result of their hard work was the village of Granville, a beautiful and productive community that continues to adapt and thrive in the 21st century. Downtown Granville has evolved into a popular tourist destination, and Denison University, founded in the 1830s as the Granville Literary and Theological Institution, has become an elite and respected college of liberal arts and sciences.

Book excerpt: In this richly detailed and imaginatively researched study, Victoria Bynum investigates "unruly" women in central North Carolina before and during the Civil War. Analyzing the complex and interrelated impact of gender, race, class, and region on the lives of black and white women, she shows how their diverse experiences and behavior reflected and influenced the changing social order and political economy of the state and region. Her work expands our knowledge of black and white women by studying them outside the plantation setting. Bynum searched local and state court records, public documents, and manuscript collections to locate and document the lives of these otherwise ordinary, obscure women. Some appeared in court as abused, sometimes abusive, wives, as victims and sometimes perpetrators of violent assaults, or as participants in ilicit, interracial relationships. During the Civil War, women freqently were cited for theft, trespassing, or rioting, usually in an effort to gain goods made scarce by war. Some women were charged with harboring evaders or deserters of the Confederacy, an act that reflected their conviction that the Confederacy was destroying them. These politically powerless unruly women threatened to disrupt the underlying social structure of the Old South, which depended on the services and cooperation of all women. Bynum examines the effects of women's social and sexual behavior on the dominant society and shows the ways in which power flowed between private and public spheres. Whether wives or unmarried, enslaved or free, women were active agents of the society's ordering and dissolution.

Book excerpt: The “riveting”* true story of the fiery summer of 1970, which would forever transform the town of Oxford, North Carolina—a classic portrait of the fight for civil rights in the tradition of To Kill a Mockingbird *Chicago Tribune On May 11, 1970, Henry Marrow, a twenty-three-year-old black veteran, walked into a crossroads store owned by Robert Teel and came out running. Teel and two of his sons chased and beat Marrow, then killed him in public as he pleaded for his life. Like many small Southern towns, Oxford had barely been touched by the civil rights movement. But in the wake of the killing, young African Americans took to the streets. While lawyers battled in the courthouse, the Klan raged in the shadows and black Vietnam veterans torched the town’s tobacco warehouses. Tyson’s father, the pastor of Oxford’s all-white Methodist church, urged the town to come to terms with its bloody racial history. In the end, however, the Tyson family was forced to move away. Tim Tyson’s gripping narrative brings gritty blues truth and soaring gospel vision to a shocking episode of our history. FINALIST FOR THE NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD “If you want to read only one book to understand the uniquely American struggle for racial equality and the swirls of emotion around it, this is it.”—Milwaukee Journal Sentinel “Blood Done Sign My Name is a most important book and one of the most powerful meditations on race in America that I have ever read.”—Cleveland Plain Dealer “Pulses with vital paradox . . . It’s a detached dissertation, a damning dark-night-of-the-white-soul, and a ripping yarn, all united by Tyson’s powerful voice, a brainy, booming Bubba profundo.”—Entertainment Weekly “Engaging and frequently stunning.”—San Diego Union-Tribune

Book excerpt: Food is one of the most fundamental elements of culture and a significant marker of regional and ethnic identity. It encompasses many other elements of cultural heritage beyond the physical ingredients required for its production. These include folklore, religion, language, familial bonds, social structures, environmental determinism, celebrations and ceremonies, landscapes, culinary routes, smells, and tastes, to name but a few. However, despite all that is known about foodways and cuisine from hospitality, gastronomical, supply chain and agricultural perspectives, there still remains a dearth of consolidated research on the wide diversity of food and its heritage attributes and contexts. This edited volume aims to fill this void by consolidating into a single volume what is known about cuisines and foodways from a heritage perspective and to examine and challenge the existing paradigms, concepts and practices related to gastronomic practices, intergenerational traditions, sustainable agriculture, indigenous rituals, immigrant stories and many more heritage elements as they pertain to comestible cuisines and practices. The book takes a global and thematic approach in examining heritage cuisines from a wide range of perspectives, including agriculture, hunting and gathering, migration, ethnic identity and place, nationalism, sustainability, colonialism, food diversity, religion, place making, festivals, and contemporary movements and trends. All chapters are rich in empirical examples but steady and sound in conceptual depth. This book offers new insight and understanding of the heritage implications of cuisines and foodways. The multidisciplinary nature of the content will appeal to a broad academic audience in the fields of tourism, gastronomy, geography, cultural studies, anthropology and sociology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where does our fascination for 'heritage' originate? This groundbreaking comparative study of preservation in France, Germany and England looks beyond national borders to reveal how the idea of heritage emerged from intense competition and collaboration in a global context. Astrid Swenson follows the 'heritage-makers' from the French Revolution to the First World War, revealing the importance of global networks driving developments in each country. Drawing on documentary, literary and visual sources, the book connects high politics and daily life and uncovers how, through travel, correspondence, world fairs and international congresses, the preservationists exchanged ideas, helped each other campaign and dreamed of establishing international institutions for the protection of heritage. Yet, these heritage-makers were also animated by fierce rivalry as international tension grew. This mixture of international collaboration and competition created the European culture of heritage, which defined preservation as integral to modernity, and still shapes current institutions and debates.
