Book excerpt: This student study project investigates the feasibility of using thick granular base for flexible pavement design in Ohio. The criteria considered include the performance criteria and life cycle economic analyses. The performance of different types of base layer design are compared using the LTTP database. The focus is on the ability of achieving uniform dynamic deflections using Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) data. Based on FWD record from LTTP database, the relative merits of different base type design are compared. The pavement performance is predicted using MEPDG design software. A sensitivity study is conducted on the effects of granular base layer parameters on the pavement performance. From the relative improvement in terms of pavement distress reduction, an optimal base layer thickness of 12 in to 15 inch is identified. The use of thicker granular base (from the current 4 in to 6 in granular base currently used in Ohio to 12 inch thick granular base) is predicted to increase the pavement service life for around 30% using the criteria for common types of distresses. A life cycle analyses are conducted using a simplified model. The model indicates that for the typical Ohio flexible pavement sections, doubling the thickness of base layer, while causes higher initial construction cost, will result in life cycle cost savings. Thus performance prediction using MEPDG and life cycle economic analyses both support positively the use of granular base in flexible pavement design in Ohio. It is also found in this study that the climate model of the existing MEPDG design software does not adequately account for the regional climate conditions (such as freeze-thawing effects) on pavement performance. It is recommended to conduct further analyses of field performance data to validate the MEPDG model predictions. Finally, recommendations are provided on the specifications for screening the supplying sources of granular materials for granular base construction.

Book excerpt: Mechanistic design concepts for conventional flexible pavement (asphalt concrete (AC) surface + granular base/subbase) for highways are proposed and validated. The procedure is based on ILLI-PAVE, a stress dependent finite element computer program, coupled with appropriate transfer functions. Two design criteria are considered: AC flexural fatigue cracking and subgrade rutting. Fatigue cracking is controlled by limiting the tensile strain at the bottom of the AC layer. Subgrade rutting is controlled by limiting the stress-ratio at the granular layer-subgrade interface. Algorithms were developed relating pavement response parameters (stresses, strains, deflections) to AC thickness, AC moduli, granular layer thickness, and subgrade moduli. Extensive analyses of the AASHO Road Test flexible pavement data are presented supporting the validity of the proposed concepts.

The Kansas DOT procedure to assign structural layer coefficients was developed years ago and based on an analysis of flexible pavement performance data and layer properties. It has been recently suggested that the Kansas DOT increase the structural layer coefficients because of changes in material and construction specifications. Different procedures can be used to estimate the structural layer coefficients for flexible pavement design. As part of the study entitled Determination of the Appropriate Use of Pavement Surface History in the KDOT Life-Cycle Cost Analysis Process an evaluation of the procedure that Kansas DOT uses to assign structural layer coefficients to different pavement materials was completed. This report provides the results of that evaluation.

Book excerpt: A procedure was developed to analyze layered elastic flexible pavement systems in terms of probability and reliability. A computer program RELIBSIA was prepared to carry out the computations. Rosenblueth method, instead of the conventional Taylor series expansion, us used to estimate the expected value and variance of the strains (dependent parameters) based on the input mean values of independent parameters, i.e., aircraft load, layer thicknesses, and material moduli. The relationships between the reliability level and the allowable strain repetition of the designed system which is established with results computed using RELIBISA provide a decision-making tool for engineers to design pavements at desired reliability level. The design can be optimized by selecting thicknesses of the bituminous concrete and the base layers so that the pavement is failed in fatigue cracking and subgrade failure at nearly the same traffic level and the same reliability level. The reliability-strain curves have steeper slopes with the bituminous concrete strain failure criterion than with the subgrade strain failure criterion, indicating that for flexible pavements designed using the Corps of Engineer's failure criteria, the design has a greater degree of uncertainty in preventing subgrade failure than fatigue cracking of the bituminous concrete surface corps. However, this may not be true in real cases because the bituminous concrete failure criteria are determined based on controlled laboratory test data which do not consider the uncertainties existing in the laboratory-to-field correlations.

This calibration task requires the availability of a robust system capable of producing the needed results in a timely and effective fashion. The current paper reports on recent research activities at the National Research Council, which aim at providing tools that can be utilised to carry out the calibration process. The objective of the research program is to establish database of resilient moduli for the different types of granular materials used in the Canadian Provinces. The research program combines both laboratory testing and numerical techniques to develop the required database.
