Book excerpt: This volume bridges the divide between film and media studies scholarship by exploring audience expectations of film and TV genre in the age of digital streaming, using qualitative thematic and quantitative data-driven analyses. Through four ground-breaking surveys of audience members and content creators, the authors have empirically determined what audiences expect of various genres, the extent to which these definitions match those of scholars and critics, and the overall variation and complexity of audience expectations in the age of media abundance. They also examine audience habits and preferences, drawing from both theory and original empirical analyses, with a view toward the implications for the moving image in a rapidly changing media environment. The book draws from the data to develop a number of new concepts, including genre repertoire, genre hybridity, audience interest maximization, and variety seeking, and a new stage of genre development, genre bending. It is an ideal resource for students and scholars interested in the symbiotic relationship between audiences and the moving image products they consume, as well as the way the current digital media environment has impacted our understanding of film and TV genres.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A complex network of regulatory systems has arisen around the provision of media in Europe. In this connection regulating content is a focal point, as content is not only of economic but of vital cultural importance. At Community level a wide variety of measures have been taken to promote this branch of industry, especially in fields in which new and innovative digital technologies are used to enhance the market potential of content and creative products and services. This important book focuses on regulatory interventions in the content industry under Community law. It offers an in-depth perspective on the functioning of the European legal framework for the content industry, its guiding principles, and its explicit and sometimes more fluid interface with policy areas falling largely into Member States competences. In this aspect the book can also be read as an analysis of the impact of the cooperation between European and Member State regulation when economic as well as social, democratic, and cultural policy goals are at stake. Among the areas of content regulation covered are: legal definitions related to the content industry; branches of the content industry broken down according to content category and distribution system; the division of competences between the EC and the Member States in cultural affairs; Community projects relevant to the content industry; competition rules relating to distribution; market entry and access regulation in the electronic communication markets; specific regulation for such considerations as the protection of minors, protection of health, protection of consumers, and protection of personal rights; ensuring and safeguarding functioning market structures in the content markets; and harmonization and coordination measures. The basis of this book was a research project commissioned by the Austrian Federal Chancellery in preparation for a seminar supported by the European Commission in connection with Austria?s Council Presidency in the first half of 2006. As a systematic overview and analysis of the legal bases of European content regulation, this book will be of extraordinary value to practitioners, policymakers, officials, and academics in the fields of media and communications law. Beyond that, the work sheds a clear and defining light on an area that has an important role to play in the future economic growth and the development of a competitive business environment in Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Arguing for a General Framework for Mass Media Scholarship challenges scholars and students to consider and reconsider what we know about media and how we think about media. As such, the book provides an important framework for thinking about knowledge—regardless of the discipline... The text provides all of the necessary tools to move the field forward in a way that will increase the rigor of the work being done and augment the overall profile of the discipline." –Dana Mastro, University of Arizona In this groundbreaking book, W. James Potter presents an innovative perspective to media scholars and students who are frustrated with the fragmentation of research findings across so many journals, books, and fields. Arguing for a General Framework for Mass Media Scholarship presents a clear plan for a more efficient way to build knowledge about the mass media so that it can be better organized and made more useful. Key Features Conducts an in-depth analysis of mass media scholarship's four major facets of effects, content, audiences, and organizations Presents a significant shift in conceptualizing media effects and ways research can be conducted to generate more useful knowledge about media influence Develops "narrative line" as a tool to guide analyses about how content decisions are made by producers Synthesizes a system of explanation about why audiences attend to certain messages and how individuals construct meaning from those messages Incorporates an analysis of mass media organizations to provide greater context of understanding messages and their effects on individuals and macro units in society "The book will play an important role in providing structure to a broad, fragmented discipline. I believe it will, at the very least, create important dialogues about what we now know/understand about areas of mass media, and where we should move as a discipline... This book is clearly a 'call to arms' for mass media scholars to ratchet up the quality of research (and what we know), to see the interconnections within and among strands of scholarship, and to move forward in a more efficient, organized manner. Professor Potter should be commended for this." —Roger Cooper, Ohio University "This book is...that call to action that comes forward every few years, to wake us up and challenge our ways of doing things, not by being radical, but via synthesis... I've been waiting for several years for a book like this." —Sahara Byrne, Cornell University
