His humor is bound to cure what ails you.” —The Press-Register Filled with stories inspired by the Cajun atmosphere, this volume captures the humorous elements of life and successfully blends them with interesting and animated characters. Tommy Joe Breaux fondly recalls the stories his grandpa told him and wanted a way to share them with others. By writing down these tales, he is saving part of his heritage as well as allowing readers to enjoy some Cajun humor. Returning characters include Elmo and Marie, Poo Poo and Stinky, and greedy Doc Duplichan in this compilation of funny stories. Divided into twelve chapters, each group highlights a different aspect of the Cajun culture and people. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a theoretical study on aspect in Chinese, including both situation and viewpoint aspects. Unlike previous studies, which have largely classified linguistic units into different situation types, this study defines a set of ontological event types that are conceptually universal and on the basis of which different languages employ various linguistic devices to describe such events. To do so, it focuses on a particular component of events, namely the viewpoint aspect. It includes and discusses a wealth of examples to show how such ontological events are realized in Chinese. In addition, the study discusses how Chinese modal verbs and adverbs affect the distribution of viewpoint aspects associated with certain situation types. In turn, the book demonstrates how the proposed linguistic theory can be used in a computational context. Simply identifying events in terms of the verbs and their arguments is insufficient for real situations such as understanding the factivity and the logical/temporal relations between events. The proposed framework offers the possibility of analyzing events in Chinese text, yielding deep semantic information.

This story begins with a family living in an underground bunker in the year 2052, while the world above is in total chaos. Nicholas and his family escaped their home in Denver and are now in New Mexico trying to survive an apocalyptic event caused by an approaching comet. The earth has been subject to natural and man-made disasters never before experienced by man. In the bunker, Nicholas reflects back on the past forty years of his life. He remembers the joyful times and the tragic events that changed everything. He relives the taking down of America by terrorist groups, the battle of Armageddon in the Middle East, natural disasters caused by great earthquakes and asteroids that changed the landscape around the world, and the great plague that killed a third of the world's population. In this doomsday scenario, 2052 Prophecies: The Last 40 Years puts readers in the bunker alongside Nicholas and his terrified family huddled together as the earth shakes violently from the comet's approach. Is it in the Prophecies that mankind will survive? Originally from Massachusetts,

The authors explore picturebooks as a specific medium or genre in literature and culture, one that prepares children for other media of communication, and they argue that picturebooks may be the most influential media of all in the socialization and representation of children. Spanning an international range of children's books, this book examine such favorites as Curious George and Frog and Toad Are Friends, along with the works of authors and illustrators including Maurice Sendak and Tove Jansson, among others. With 116 illustrations, How Picturebooks Work offers the student of children's literature a new methodology, new theories, and a new set of critical tools for examining the picturebook form.

How does fiction enhance young people's sense of self-hood? Supported by cognitive psychology and brain research, this ground-breaking book is the first study of young readers' cognitive and emotional engagement with fiction. It explores how fiction stimulates perception, attention, imagination and other cognitive activity, and opens radically new ways of thinking about literature for young readers. Examining a wide range of texts for a young audience, from picturebooks to young adult novels, the combination of cognitive criticism and children’s literature theory also offers significant insights for literary studies beyond the scope of children’s fiction. An important milestone in cognitive criticism, the book provides convincing evidence that reading fiction is indispensable for young people’s intellectual, emotional and social maturation.
