Book excerpt: Set in Virginia, in the Appalachian hills, colorful characters make up this lighthearted, humorous, romantic and touching story of family and friends, coming together, and working through the hard times. They learn that home isn't always where you're from, but where you make it. Family isn't always who you're related to, but, who's there for you... and how being needed is sometimes all that you really need. Jerry Granger, 59, was the man every man wanted to be. He seemed to have it all. But, following the untimely death of his wife, he felt he had lost everything. Becoming withdrawn and depressed, he turns away friends and family, even his own son and brother. When a lifelong friend realizes the severity of Jerry's situation, she convinces Jerry's brother to come home for him; soon, Jerry's son returns home, as well. Rather than just curing one man of his problems, they find they are three men, each with their own problems, all trying to co-exist. When a young lady wanders up one day, in search of work and a place to stay, things begin turning around for everyone. They find themselves resolving things, as well as being presented with new, unbelievable situations.

And I will settle for nothing less than queenship…” As the only child of two of London’s most prestigious lawyers, Kate-Camille Granger has grown up expecting the world, so when she finds herself a nobody at Hayford Independent – the elite all-girls school she attends alongside the daughters of some of the richest people in the world – she comes up with a devastating plan to get to the top. Kate won’t work alone, though, and it doesn’t take long to find a vulnerable group of classmates to help her: a group she will call “The Granger Girls.” Under Kate’s control, these five girls soon find themselves pulled into a scheme which will bring terror to every student at Hayford, as they commit crime after horrific crime. But how long can they take it for? How long will Kate be able to rule before The Granger Girls finally snap?...

Book excerpt: A serial killer stalks the Sunshine Coast in the final novel of this Edgar Award–winning series by the “master of the psychological thriller” (Booklist, on Mother’s Love). The ninth and final book in the Karl Alberg series makes a wonderfully elegant end to the saga of the tiny town on Canada’s “Sunshine Coast,” the policeman who tries to catch the town’s baddies, and the sensual, smart-mouthed librarian he loves. Alberg and Cassandra are at long last getting married, and Alberg has a new sergeant, the beautiful and enigmatic Edwina Henderson. But don’t be fooled by all the sunshine. Sechelt, British Colombia, once again has more than its share of murders. And the serial killer who’s busy knocking off residents—someone known as “the avenging Angel”—may be the darkest character Alber has ever faced.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adam Granger self-published the first edition of Granger’s Fiddle Tunes for Guitar in 1979. A second edition was published in 1994. Now Mel Bay Publications presents the third edition of the book. This 236-page book is the most extensive and best-documented collection of fiddle tunes for the flatpicking guitar player in existence, and includes reels, hoedowns, hornpipes, rags, breakdowns, jigs and slip-jigs, presented in Southern, Northern, Irish, Canadian, Texas and Old-time styles. There are 508 fiddle tunes referenced under 2500 titles and alternate titles. The titles are fully indexed, making the book doubly valuable as a reference book and a source book. In this new edition, all tunes are typeset, instead of being handwritten as they were in the previous editions, making the tabs easier to read. The tunes in Granger’s Fiddle Tunes for Guitar are presented in Easytab, a streamlined tablature notation system designed by Adam specifically for fiddle tunes. The book comes with a link which gives access to mp3 recordings by Adam of all 508 tunes, each played once at a moderate tempo, with rhythm on one channel and lead on the other. Also included in Granger’s Fiddle Tunes for Guitar are instructions for reading Easytab, descriptions of tune types presented in the book, and primers on traditional flatpicking and rhythm guitar. Additionally, there are sections on timing, ornamentation, technique, and fingering, as well as information on tune sources and a history of the collection. Mel Bay also offers, The Granger Collection, by Bill Nicholson, the same 508 tunes in standard music notation.

Book excerpt: In a small town in northern New Mexico a father’s untimely death leads to mayhem and murder. Families find their lives threatened once the father’s will is read for unlike his wife, he did not believe in primogeniture. Truth reveals that the father did not believe in his son Granger at all and herein begins the conflict. The father’s death was to be Granger’s salvation but Granger must now find a way to gain wealth in order to maintain a family male heir. The father’s doctor and nurse know without a doubt that the father’s death was not a natural one, but can they get the daughter Sophia to see the obvious as she suffers in her grief? Soon Granger is shown not to be as clever as he believes himself to be when someone else—someone who wants Granger’s money and is equally as dangerous—comes on the scene and Granger soon becomes a victim. Sinister and clever machinations now outweigh truth and honesty. Sophia is not willing to let her home and her loved ones be separated from her without a fight as her relatives threaten to remove her from all she holds dear, including life itself. Can she survive and solve the mystery of her father’s death? The body count piles up as the story unfolds. What appears obvious may not be easy to prove as the prodigal son falls. Includes Readers Guide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new essays in this book make two central claims. First, for some people, the word "feminist" has been either poorly defined or even demonized. Hermione Granger, of the Harry Potter series, serves as an outstanding example of what modern young feminism looks like: activist, powerful and full of agency, yet feminine, romantic and stylish--a new kind of feminism for a new kind of girl. The second claim the essays make is that our young, emergent feminist Hermione Granger is a pivotal character upon whom the entire series rests--not Harry Potter himself (or, at least, not Harry Potter solely). It is Hermione who solves every difficult puzzle, performs every difficult spell, and to whom her two male companions look for guidance and advice. On several occasions throughout the series, Hermione literally saves the world through her actions. This is an outstanding model for young women (and for young men as well) who are confused about how feminism manifests and operates in 2012.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over a hundred years, The Columbia Granger's Index to Poetry in Anthologies has been the preeminent index for answers to questions about the world of poetry, identifying the author of a poem or the anthologies in which it can be found when only a title, first line, or last line is known. This latest edition-a "must have" for libraries-brings its index up to date as of May 31, 2006. This latest version features 85,000 classic and contemporary poems by 12,000 poets. Also included are works in translation and for the first time poetry in Spanish, Vietnamese, and French. The subject organization of the poems is especially useful. Hundreds of new subjects have been added, indexing poems on highly relevant topics such as Osama bin Laden, the war in Iraq, Dick Cheney, the Internet, and Rosa Parks, as well as timeless subjects like the Bill of Rights, unspoken love, faith, and inspiration. Our impressive team of consultants includes J. D. McClatchy, Harvey Shapiro, and former poet laureate Mark Strand. From The Norton Anthology of Poetry (2005 edition) to Poetry after 9/11 and Garrison Keillor's Good Poems, this new edition puts readers in touch with the best of the latest anthologies and the lasting favorites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Mayo Clinic begins on the Minnesota prairie following a devastating tornado in 1883. It also begins with the women who joined the growing practice as physicians, as laboratory researchers, as developers of radium therapy and cancer treatments, and as innovators in virtually all aspects of patient care, education, and research. While these women contributed to the clinic’s origins and success, their roles have not been widely celebrated—until now. Women of Mayo Clinic traces those early days from the perspectives of more than forty women—nurses, librarians, social workers, mothers, sisters, and wives—who were instrumental in the world-renowned medical center’s development. Mother Alfred Moes persuaded Dr. William Worrall Mayo to take on the hospital project. Edith Graham was the first professionally trained nurse to work at the practice. Alice Magaw developed a national reputation administering anesthesia in the operating rooms there. Maud Mellish Wilson established the library and burnished the clinic’s standing through widely distributed publications about its innovations. Virginia Wright-Peterson tells the stories of these and other talented, dedicated pioneers through institutional records and clippings from the period, introducing a welcome new perspective on the history of both Mayo Clinic and women in medicine.

Book excerpt: His first screen test was a disaster, his features were large and irregular, his left ear outsized the right, yet he would one day be headlined as the Most Handsome Man in the World. And most of his leading ladies—among them, Ingrid Bergman, Jennifer Jones, Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren, and Ava Gardner—would not disagree. Irreverent, candid, refreshingly honest, Lynn Haney's carefully researched biography not only charts the remarkable career of the Oscar-winning star but also plumbs Peck's frequently troubling complexity in his off-screen roles as husband, father, lover, and son. About the tough times, Haney minces no words; but the misfortunes by no means eclipse the energy, intensity, and excitement that characterized Peck's five decades of moviemaking. This is a book filled with telling photographs, and a story cast with movie moguls from Louis B. Mayer to Darryl Zanuck, with directors from Hitchcock and Walsh to Huston and Wyler, with nearly every major luminary in Hollywood, and, starring for the first time in toto, Gregory Peck.

Book excerpt: Including more than 300 alphabetically listed entries, this 2-volume set presents a timely and detailed overview of some of the most significant contributions women have made to American popular culture from the silent film era to the present day. The lives and accomplishments of women from various aspects of popular culture are examined, including women from film, television, music, fashion, and literature. In addition to profiles, the encyclopedia also includes chapters that provide a historical review of gender, domesticity, marriage, work, and inclusivity in popular culture as well as a chronology of key achievements. This reference work is an ideal introduction to the roles women have played, both in the spotlight and behind it, throughout the history of popular culture in America. From the stars of Hollywood's Golden Age to the chart toppers of the 2020s, author Laura L. Finley documents how attitudes towards these icons have evolved and how their influence has shifted throughout time. The entries and essays also address such timely topics as feminism, the #MeToo movement, and the gender pay gap.
