Book excerpt: The land and marshes East and North of Beaufort, NC was, and still is a very unique place. The Pine trees and Cedars grow hand in hand with the marsh grass, mixed in with salt air from the Sounds. Many books have been written about this area where schedules are set by tides almost as much by the hands of a clock. This book tells the story of what life was like for the people who fished and farmed the area. It was a tough life for most, there were no air conditioners in summer, when the heat was unyielding upon the water. Winter could be just as harsh, if not more so. Fishing still went on in 20 degrees just as much as it did when the mercury topped 100. Money was tight, it seemed there was never enough and tired backs took a back seat to the needs of the family. This was a time when Congregations gathered at Church and gave thanks for what they had. Come see how things were, back in the 1950s in this time before Cell phones and the Internet, along the Coast of Carteret County, North Carolina.

Book excerpt: Isle was once in the center of a huge white pine forest that stretched from southeastern Wisconsin to the Canadian border and beyond. When the timber companies finished clear-cutting the land in the 1880s and 90s the railroad companies sold it to the poor immigrants of northern Europe who were told that if the land could grow trees it could grow crops. It took three generations to learn otherwise. In these stories you will discover people who came across the ocean from Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Germans and French were there too. As well as the Poles and Finns and Russians. These were the first people to grub out the tree stumps and pick the rocks to clear the fields and plant the crops that grew so poorly in the sandy soil. Within these grand sweeps of history people came, lived and died in Isle. These are their stories, written so the young strangers who reside in present day towns like Isle will know of the giants that had gone before them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of years ago now as one of my grandsons first birthday approached I thought about what to give a one year old. There are a million things that will be played with for a short while then either broken or ignored. I wanted to give something special, something lasting, something that even when older he might still enjoy. Then it struck me, since he likes the silly little stories I tell him upon his request, that maybe I could write some cute little short stories, with a moral as well, just for him (and any of my other grandchildren as well when shared). Thats all it took to get me started. Since then each year I write a little story that somehow relates to something in his life. When another grandchild came along he also was added to the list of recipients of original stories. When I got to thinking about it I decided there may be other grandparents that would like to spend time with their grandchild reading a little story. Now a few years down the pike and I have enough for a book. And so herein I offer my readers a chance to share the joy of time spent reading to a child. That is why my stories were written in the first place. Children go through phases as with my grandchildren there were the dinosaurs, whales, (especially the blue whale), hedge hogs, puppies and gold fish. Im sure you get my drift. All of these fed my imagination and help to produce stories that have a connection and personal touch for both the child and me. These stories are not written for children to read, but rather for a loving adult to sit down with child on their lap or side by side on a shared sofa and be read to. I recommend using funny voices and lots of emphasis and maybe a tickle or two at just the right moment to add flavor and a garnish to each story. The giggles, like sparklers on the 4th of July, will shower joy in all directions and warm the heart of the one reading the story and those close by. Do not be concerned about the content all the stories contained in this book are rated PG - (to be read by Parent or Grandparent). I hope you will enjoy these short stories even more that I did writing them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A vast, thoroughly wonderful assortment of poetry, memoirs and stories . . . that defines today’s female Italian-American experience” (Publishers Weekly). Often stereotyped as nurturing others through food, Italian-American women have often struggled against this simplistic image to express the realities of their lives. In this unique collection, over 50 Italian-American female writers speak in voices that are loud, boisterous, sweet, savvy, and often subversively funny. Drawing on personal and cultural memories rooted in experiences of food, they dissolve conventional images, replacing them with a sumptuous, communal feast of poetry, stories, and memoir. This collection also delves into unexpected, sometimes shocking terrain as these courageous authors bear witness to aspects of the Italian American experience that normally go unspoken—mental illness, family violence, incest, drug addiction, AIDS, and environmental degradation. As provocative as it is appetizing, “this collection of verse and prose pieces . . . reveals the evocative and provocative power of food as event and as symbol, as well as the diversity of these women’s lives and their ambivalence regarding the role of nurturer” (Library Journal).
