Download or read book Understanding the Divorce Cycle written by Nicholas H. Wolfinger and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-06-06 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up in a divorced family leads to a variety of difficulties for adult offspring in their own partnerships. One of the best known and most powerful is the divorce cycle, the transmission of divorce from one generation to the next. This book examines how the divorce cycle has transformed family life in contemporary America by drawing on two national data sets. Compared to people from intact families, the children of divorce are more likely to marry as teenagers, but less likely to wed overall, more likely to marry people from divorced families, more likely to dissolve second and third marriages, and less likely to marry their live-in partners. Yet some of the adverse consequences of parental divorce have abated even as divorce itself proliferated and became more socially accepted. Taken together, these findings show how parental divorce is a strong force in people's lives and society as a whole.

Book Synopsis Grandparent-grandchild Relationships by : Kimberly Jeanette Settlemyre
Download or read book Grandparent-grandchild Relationships written by Kimberly Jeanette Settlemyre and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Explored family type differences in adjustment, environmental risk factors, and levels of perceived grandparent support among 89 university students (including 40 children of divorce). In addition, this study explored the potential for grandparents to mediate the adverse effects commonly associated with high levels of life transitions, parental conflict, and a poor quality of family environment. Subjects completed a questionnaire composed of a number of previously validated self-report measures, and statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS Windows Version 6.1. Results suggested that there were no significant differences in social relations abilities and levels of risk factors present between students from divorced and never divorced families. The only significant finding suggested that those from divorced families exhibited lower levels of life satisfaction and higher levels of depressive symptomatology. In addition, the hypotheses concerning grandparent support were not confirmed. There were no significant differences in levels of grandparent support by family type. The buffering model was not supported, indicating that grandparents did not mediate the adverse effects associated with risk factors for poor adjustment in either family type. For future research, inclusion of a broader and less homogenous sample may elucidate buffering effects not found in this study's college-educated, primarily Caucasian, participants.

Book Synopsis Social Networks and the Life Course by : Duane F. Alwin
Download or read book Social Networks and the Life Course written by Duane F. Alwin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume engages the interface between the development of human lives and social relational networks. It focuses on the integration of two subfields of sociology/social science--the life course and social networks. Research practitioners studying social networks typically focus on social structure or social organization, ignoring the complex lives of the people in those networks. At the same time, life course researchers tend to focus on individual lives without necessarily studying the contexts of social relationships in which lives are embedded and “linked” to one another through social networks. These patterns are changing and this book creates an audience of researchers who will better integrate the two subfields. It covers the role of social networks across the life span, from childhood and adolescence, to midlife, through old age.

Book Synopsis Parentless Parents by : Allison Gilbert
Download or read book Parentless Parents written by Allison Gilbert and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2011-02-15 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parentless Parents is the first book to show how the absence of grandparents impacts everything about the way mothers and fathers raise their children--from everyday parenting decisions to the relationships they have with their spouses and in-laws. For the first time in U.S. history, as the average age of women giving birth has increased significantly, millions of children are at risk of having fewer years with their grandparents than ever before. How has this substantial shift affected parents and kids? Journalist, award-winning television producer, and parentless parent Allison Gilbert has polled and studied more than 1,300 parentless parents from across the United States and a dozen other countries to find out. Through her pioneering research, Gilbert not only shares her own story and the significant and poignant effect that this trend has had on her and hundreds of other families, but also the myriad ways these mothers and fathers have learned to keep the memory of their parents alive for their children, and to find the support and understanding they need.
