Book excerpt: Jim Lindsay's The Sniper reveals, for the first time ever, the full story of the deadliest sniper in Marine Corps history, Chuck Mawhinney, who served in the Vietnam war at age 18—written with his full cooperation and participation. Charles "Chuck" Mawhinney is a United States Marine who holds the Corps' record for the most confirmed sniper kills (and the second most of any US service member in history), having recorded 103 confirmed kills in 16 months during the Vietnam War. He was also the youngest—killing the enemy as a teenager. In 1967, at the age of 18, Mawhinney joined the Marines and began his assent from recruit to the Marine Corps’ deadliest sniper. During his tours—in one of the most dangerous war zones of Vietnam—his character and charisma helped him deal with life and death in a hell hole with other young men a long way from home. After Vietnam, Mawhinney married and settled into his post-war life, raised a family, and was content that no one knew of his accomplishments in war. Then in 1991 he was startled and dismayed when outed by a fellow Marine sniper, Joseph Ward, who spoke of Mawhinney’s number of kills in his book, Dear Mom. Newspapers picked up the story and Mawhinney’s life changed forever. The notoriety troubled him at first, but then he accepted the fame and used the opportunity to train service men and lawmen in the art of long-distance shooting. At last, Chuck's full story is told, including his heroic exploits in battle and the terrible toll that taking a life exerts on a human being.

Book excerpt: The spectre of ‘The Disappeared’, those abducted by the IRA, secretly executed and their bodies buried in bogs, lakes and woodlands, has overshadowed the debate around the legacy of the Troubles in Northern Ireland for the last two decades. This book, the first of its kind, uncovers the extent to which ‘forced disappearances’ were part of the violent political conflicts that blighted Ireland for 200 years. Succeeding where attempts by the PSNI, journalists, and other historians had failed, Ó Ruairc’s research led to the identification and recovery of a British soldier killed by the IRA. He reveals in this book the location of several other bodies that remain to be exhumed. The Disappeared cuts through the exaggeration and myth that pervade the popular history of the Irish struggle for freedom. The author examines the role of leading Irish politicians in these killings and challenges the commonly held belief that the Provisional IRA disappeared more victims than the ‘Good Old-IRA’ of the War of Independence. Behind each disappearance there is a face, a life story, and a family left searching for answers. Ó Ruairc deftly incorporates this human element, paying tribute to those who were disappeared on both sides of the conflict.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Redemption on the Road to Jericho is a Christian novel with two simultaneous stories centering around the biblical story of the Good Samaritan. One is a modern-day tale while the other one occurred two thousand years ago in the land of Judea. They are emotionally engaging stories dealing with love, human conflict, pain and suffering, and the healing process that can set a person free from their painful past. It is possible that this book can inspire victims of abuse to set themselves free from the emotional scars that they carry. This book illustrates how life was like when Jesus walked among us and shows that people really haven't changed all that much since then. We may have many modern conveniences and luxuries and have access to all kinds of knowledge, but we still have difficulty loving one another and making wise choices. The story of the Good Samaritan encompasses all of humanity because we have all been victims or bullies at one time or another. We all need redemption and we all need a helping hand at one time or another, and we can choose to be that helping hand as well. We are all going down our own unique pathways in life, but no matter what road a person travels, one way or another, all roads eventually lead to the cross. Once we arrive there, we have to choose what we will do with Jesus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mason Allyon Dwennon is mad- both angry with the world mad and strapped in a rubber room while wearing a Napoleon hat mad. Diagnosed as a manic-depressive schizophrenic, Mason exists as a self-exiled pariah, skirting the fringes of humanity as the sole member of his Square Peg Society. Divorced, alone, bitter, depressed, haunted by voices and visions and on the verge of suicide, Mason experiences a major psychotic episode and is hospitalized. There he is finally diagnosed as having dissociative identity disorder and found to have at least eight different and distinct personalities. Negotiations with the Sniper is a first person account of Mason's ordeal. The story details a three-year free association session with his imaginary psychiatrist (A wise-cracking, life-size plastic Barbie head who speaks with a thick German accent and refers to himself as Dr. Carl). As the story progresses, each of Mason's eight personalities reveals him or herself in their own voices as they search for the elusive something responsible for all of his suffering. To compound his problems, Mason continuously floats in and out of fugue states and has to reconcile missing periods of time. All too frequently, his habitués are less-than well behaved during his mental lapses. In Mason's own words, "Many's the time I've had to stand before a screaming, slavering, red-faced employer, manager, shop foreman, neighbor, police officer, parent, sibling, spouse, in-law, teacher, first sergeant, nun, etc. and bear the tirade meant for one of my compadres, while unable to offer any reasonable excuse for my actions." Despite the sinister allusion to a concealed killer, the title actually refers to the cruel, thoughtless and ofttimes well-intentioned actions of those persons most influential in young Mason's life, responsible for triggering his psychotic responses.

Book excerpt: We see mafias as vast, powerful organizations, harvesting billions of dollars across the globe and wrapping their tentacles around everything from governance to finance. But is this the truth? Traveling from mafia initiation ceremonies in far-flung Russian cities to elite gambling clubs in downtown Macau, Federico Varese sets off in search of answers. Using wiretapped conversations, interviews, and previously unpublished police records, he builds up a picture of the real men and women caught up in mafia life, showing their loves and fears, ambitions and disappointments, as well as their crimes. Mafia Life takes us into the real world of organized crime, where henchmen worry about bad managers and have high blood pressure, assassinations are bungled as often as they come off, and increasing pressure from law enforcement means that a life of crime is no longer lived in the lap of luxury. As our world changes, so must mafias. Globalization, migration, and technology are disrupting their traditions and threatening their revenue streams, and the Mafiosi must evolve or die. Mafia Life is an intense and totally compelling look at these organizations and the daily life of their members, as they get to grips with the modern world.

Book excerpt: Synopsis: Several decades since the last Human War, and the World is almost back at its former glory. The scars of the last War can now only be found in the history books. After two millennia of self destruction, humanity finally managed to unify as a group under the rule of the Six Council. Under its regime, the remaining 156 countries around the world swore an oath to work toward peace and harmony. War becomes a taboo, and any country who breaks this rule will be punished severely. Technology progresses relatively fast in this so-called Utopia. Full dive technology that allows the user to experience a dream like reality known as VR (Virtual Reality) became really popular especially to the gaming industry. A world to escape humanity’s Utopia. Unlike reality who is heavily regulated by the rules and regulations of the Six Council. Virtual Reality becomes a symbol of freedom, far from the shackles that binds the current society. 2064 Human Era, a VRMMO (Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online) game, was launched on its Closed BETA test, Hollow Earth Online. With the game under the most popular genres: Action, Fantasy, RPG (Role Playing Game), many people were keen to try and play the game. After all, HEO's predecessor Arcadia Online, a game released by Atlas Inc. several years ago that garnered a few million players around the globe. Unlike Arcadia, HEO’s world is scaled like the world, a virtual reality under a single instance. Just like a typical fantasy rpg, HEO has one thing that reality lacks, “Magic” a phenomena that can’t be explained nor recreated by science. A world where magic exists and you can be whatever you want, or so everyone thought. Several thousand players worldwide received invitations to participate in the three-day Closed Beta Test event. Asriel, a college student, was among those who received an invitation email from Atlas Inc. to partake in the event as a Beta Tester. HEO seemed like just another fantasy VRMMO from a well-known developer, living up to everyone's expectations. However, little did they know, it was actually the prelude to an apocalypse unlike anything humanity had faced in the last two millennia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Éamon de Valera was the single most consequential Irish figure of the twentieth century. He was a leader in the Easter Rising, the figurehead of the anti-Treaty rebels during the dark days of the Civil War and, later, as the founder of Fianna Fáil and president of Ireland, the pivotal figure in the birth of the Republic. In this, the first volume of a magisterial new biography, acclaimed historian and broadcaster David McCullagh charts De Valera's vertiginous rise from humble beginnings to electoral victory with Fianna Fáil in 1932. Riveting, nuanced, provocative and humorous, it draws on a wealth of new and neglected sources to present a truly ground-breaking portrait of de Valera the man, his times and his complex, ever-shifting legacy. 'David McCullagh combines the investigative skills of an experienced journalist with the detachment of an accomplished historian. In this vividly readable and at times gripping biography he tackles head-on all of the perennial de Valera controversies, including his parentage, his role in the 1916 Rising, his relationship with Michael Collins, his responsibility for the Civil War and his subsequent rise to power, and does so with acuity and objectivity. McCullagh's range and command of the source material is masterly ... a comprehensive, mature biography, both enlightening and entertaining.' MAURICE MANNING

Book excerpt: In the midst of the inhuman and brutal battle for Stalingrad, German and Russian snipers roam the ruins like angels of death, spreading fear and terror. Katja Kalikova lost her husband to German bombs and her youngest son, Boris, to a Soviet bullet. Since then, she and her 8-year-old son, Grisha, have been fighting for their daily survival. Major Erwin Koenig is an officer in the Wehrmacht and was stationed in Stalingrad. When his son Rolf is also sent to Stalingrad and falls victim to Russian snipers, Koenig has only one goal left. To avenge his son's death, the former sniper instructor sets his sights on living Russian sniper legend Vasily Saizev. Koenig blazes a bloody trail through dying Stalingrad, quickly turning from hunter to hunted. When Katja and Major Koenig's paths fatefully cross, they make a pact to defeat Saizew. The fate of the soldiers fighting in Stalingrad, as well as that of the Russian civilians forced to remain in the city, is portrayed bleakly, coldly, and without pathos. A few exemplary original photos from the Second World War and accompanying drawings illustrate the Battle of Stalingrad and the legendary sniper duel between Saizev and Koenig.
