She just used the things that were closest at hand. These included fruits, vegetables, and spices. These also included natural products like Fullers earth, oatmeal, honey, yogurt, etc. It was only in the 19th century that she began to use glycerin as an additive in natural products. Until then all her beauty recipes were passed on to her, from her grandmother, and so on down the ages. She also used to make hair pomades for grandpa, in Elizabethan times using animal fat. No wonder, grandpa did not bother much about the smelly atmosphere surrounding him in his house or outside, because after all, his scalp, and unwashed body stank as powerfully as his surroundings. Also, she painted her face with lead oxide and chalk powder in order to imitate the pale complexion of Queen Elizabeth, but that lead oxide was extremely poisonous and give her a very short life span. But then, she was just imitating her ancient Roman and Greek ancestresses who use a mixture of calcium carbonate, chalk and lead oxide to paint their faces, and then redden her lips with a red paint made up of clay and red iron oxide. In fact, this red paint on the lips was the prerogative of the Empress and her aristocratic friends in ancient Rome, though Greek women of all classes used it regularly. Also, it was allowed on women of the street in Rome. Virtuous Roman matrons never painted their lips, even though Plautus said that a woman without paint is like food without salt! Wonder about the company he kept. One really enterprising Italian Signora Toffana thought up a face powder, which would consist of chalk and arsenic. She gave her woman clients instructions to use this powder upon their faces, only when they were in the company of their husbands. When the number of husbands dying due to arsenic poisoning began to escalate, the signora was executed, but she left behind a number of very wealthy and happy widow clients. In Italy during the Middle Ages, it was fashionable to have a white skin, but golden hair was best achieved with a little bit of sun bleaching. So the ladies applied lemon juice all over their hair, and put on a wide brimmed hat to cover their faces. This wide brimmed hat, however, did not have any top. The hair was allowed to flow out of the open top, and bleach in the sun! Egyptian ladies in ancient Egypt used egg whites and honey keep their skins youthful, butter and powdered barley to prevent and remove blemishes in their skin, and all that harsh effect of the Egyptian sun, neutralized with a mixture of milk and honey applied on their faces every day. In fact, I use cream and honey with a pinch of salt, every evening.

She knew that herbs and other plant products, were amazingly efficient, and effective in getting rid of minor ailments, which would be the lot and portion of her large family. That is why she used all those nostrums, infusions, decoctions, and other herbal products which had been passed on to her by her grandma and so on down the ages. So here is another collection of grandma’s natural remedies and ancient herbal recipes to keep you healthy, as well as beautiful. All these products are easily available right in your garden or in your kitchen. Best of all, they have no aftereffects and they have no side effects. That is because all these products are completely hundred percent natural. Why are so many people going back to natural remedies and ancient herbal recipes, in the 21st century? That is because they have found that chemical-based drugs and medicines have a short-term effect. They may also come accompanied with toxic effects, and side effects. So you are going to find yourself suffering from these long-term aftereffects. However, that is definitely not the case when you are taking natural remedies, which have been made with hundred percent natural products. And that is what grandma did. She gathered all the natural products available in her garden, or easily available in the woods, when she went rambling out gathering herbs, and brought them home. These were then used, to cure a number of ailments. Some of them seem rather drastic, but you need to remember that grandma was more of an experimenter. She knew that there was one product in these herbal combinations which did all the magic. The rest were just “filling.”

Book excerpt: Grandma’s Natural Remedies and Ancient Herbal Beauty Recipes Table of Contents Introduction Monday’s Child Is Fair of Face The Healing Power of Infused Oil Remedies for winter- Chilblains Sciatica Stiff Joints… Quit your Bellyachin’! Simple Perfumed Ointments Natural Cures For Summer Ailments Appendix Introduction A couple of years ago, somebody asked me what made me so interested in herbal remedies and natural cures as well as natural beauty recipes? That is when I told him that the wisdom of the ancients had not been garnered together, and would be lost as the generations forgot about asking their old wise ancestors, the Lore which they knew. So I was seven years old, when I decided to myself that I needed to know everything about what my grandmother had learned from her grandmother. And I started writing those ancient natural remedies and beauty recipes down. More than three decades later, I started writing books on natural remedies and natural herbal recipes, which I collected, whenever I went around the countryside. People used to go around looking at the places to visit; I used to go around asking for the oldies of the village who would give me herbal remedies and recipes. In around 30 years, I collected thousands of these recipes, which were and are still being used by villagers and townsfolk and which have been given to them down the ages. And they work, because all the ingredients are natural. And also, the genetic makeup of hard-working people living in an unpolluted atmosphere helped in keeping them healthy. So they did not have to go running to a doctor whenever they caught a sniffle. They knew the easiest herbal tisane in which would put them straight in a couple of days. Now, I spent my childhood and youth in jungles as well as in remote areas in all corners of the compass, where nobody believed in medicines, – and sometimes medical access for serious cases was able only through air lifting by a helicopter – but everybody believed in the power of nature and her curative properties. Also, plenty of exercise, a good and healthy diet and grandma’s natural remedies kept us healthy and happy. And the funny thing is that the only times we got sick with measles, mumps, and chickenpox was when we came down from the mountains to the cities and the towns during our annual vacations. The moment we got back into the healthy atmosphere of the mountains, with plenty of fresh air, plenty of fruit and drink and plenty of opportunities to create lots of childish mischief and mayhem, we were content and happy children again. We never knew that there were medicines which you needed to pop to keep healthy. Is not this the natural trend of the 21st century “civilized” person? You have lost your faith in natural remedies to keep you healthy. You would rather buy something expensive, which is being endorsed by your favorite star. I am certain she never uses that medicine herself, because it is made up of chemicals. These chemicals are going to have a harmful after effect on your body. The first thing you do when you wake up is take some vitamins with your breakfast. After that, you take some vitamins or pills to pep you up. Then you take the medicines prescribed to you by a doctor. Count the times you take some sort of medicine in the shape of a pill, vitamin, and drug throughout the day. And then can you believe someone who has not been to see a doctor for the last 30 years? There are plenty of octogenarians in our area who believe in natural remedies and good diets to keep them healthy. They are all grandpas and grandmas. They do not coddle themselves with pills and medicines.

Author Bio Introduction Millenniums ago, a man deciding to build a garden was fortunate because he had all that land right outside his door. All he had to do is clear out a piece of land, and mark it with a boundary wall. After that, he could go hunting for attractive looking plants in the wild, and bring them back home. With a little bit of care and cherishing, he would soon have a tame garden of his own. But today, a large number of us are not so fortunate. Space is at a premium. Concrete jungles have taken the place of what was once nature’s backyard. And that is why man is looking for easy options to bring beautiful greenery inside his limited space. And so this book is for all those, who want to know more about indoor plants, how to grow them, how to take care of them, which are the best plant varieties which flourish indoors and tips and techniques with which you can enjoy not only a relaxing hobby, but also greenery around you. Until just after the Second World War, indoor household plants were limited to ferns, palms, and potted plants, which flowered in season. Surely plants like aspidistras were also popular for interior decoration but soon more and more wide-ranging varieties and species of foliage parted plants began to be known to keen gardeners. This change is due chiefly to the architects who designed postwar buildings on severe lines. Gone were the rambling houses with huge gardens. Strictly utilitarian designs were utilized by architects to design these houses and flats. Frankly speaking most of them were chicken coops. The introduction of houseplants in a large variety of colors and fonts provided a flash of color to those austere and severe designs. You could relieve the simplicity and the austerity of the home by growing houseplants indoors. Thanks to the improved heating and lighting systems, many varieties which were once grown in hot houses, greenhouses and conservatories would now flourish indoors as houseplants. There are many plants which are easier to grow, and last for several years.

Naturally, the spices and herbs have been used since ancient times to help keep people healthy, beautiful, and also youthful. Remember that not everybody in grandma’s time or even in the time of our ancestors could afford to go to the doctor. In fact, physicians were only restricted to people who could pay their exorbitant fees. The rest of the common crowd made do with the knowledge that had been passed down to them, by their ancestors, and also from the knowledge gained through experimenting on their own. This is how so many natural remedies came into vogue, and so many of them proved to be successful. Many of them were quack remedies, but this was because many of the ingredients which were used here were rather astonishing, when seen by a 21st century perspective. Nevertheless, there was some particular reason, why these quack remedies proved to be successful, because they had some material in them, which was able to cure people. Now let us take for example, the use of goose grease, for rubbing on the scalp to make the hair grow faster. Goose grease is nothing but fatty oil. It moisturized the scalp. You could get the same results by rubbing in sheep fat. So if our ancestors did not have one thing, they made do with something approximating that item, in their opinion. So one had to use goose grease and passed on this knowledge to his descendants, the coming generations began to believe that yes, this was the product, which would make your hair grow long, lustrous, and healthy. It would also keep your scalp dandruff free. Now, what was the reason why so many people in ancient times kept healthy, even though they lived in unhygienic surroundings? Firstly, they had a strong constitution, and did not coddle themselves. They knew the value of the sun and the fresh air, and they stayed out as much as they could. They just came home to rest, eat, and possibly recuperate, if they suffered from some ailment or from injuries. Also, they were very particular about their diet. They enjoyed plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. They also drank fresh milk in large quantities whenever they could, as well as ate milk products like butter, butter, milk, cheese, and cottage cheese as often as they could, and when they could afford it. The wealth of a tribe depended on that the amount of cows and goats they had. Other livestock was also very precious, but these came paramount. Whenever people of one tribe were attacked by people of other tribes, the cry went up “cows, pigs, horses, goats and sheep first, children second.” The young children along with the animals were hidden away with the elders, who led the adults of the tribe do the fighting. This fighting was done, sometimes to the death, by the men and women of the tribe. The elders, who were unable to fight, were considered to be the people who would help the children survive, with knowledge about their ancient heritage. This was the time when herbal lore was passed down to the generations from the elders of the tribe to the young next-generation and the youngest generation.

At that time, 70s and the Britannica volumes had been published in the 50s, this particular encyclopedia had a tendency of abbreviating the descriptions and the knowledge about anything about which they knew nothing! So as nobody was there to tell them about me nature plants and miniature shrubs, which were so common in the mysterious East and Oriental Gardens, they had just written about two paragraphs about them. So I went to the source of more information, father and asked him to elucidate. He immediately explained that bonsai was the Japanese name given to plants, which were fully grown trees, but were miniature. He also explained about little orange trees, which were about 12 to 18 inches in size and were laden with orange fruit. This was very fascinating. We needed bonsais in our garden, I and my younger brother. Like right now.

Book excerpt: Table of Contents Introduction Benefits of Proper Amounts of Salt The Substitution and Usage of Rock salt Ancient Thai medicine And Diet Crystallized and Refined Sugars Proper Ancient Thai Good Health Diet Bleached and Refined White Flour Margarine and Hydrogenated Oil Artificial Milk Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction I was just fixing lunch, listening to a 1954 old-time radio program, starring Dick Powell. Richard Diamond was sponsored by Camel Cigarettes. I was shocked to hear that this radio program was telling about 198 million – yes, I have got the figures right – cigarettes, being sent to Army, Navy, and Air Force hospitals and camps, free of cost. The idea was to get men and women addicted to cigarettes. 138,781 doctors were supposedly asked about the brand of cigarettes they smoked in a cross-country nationwide survey, and they said “Camels.” No wonder the natural good health of a whole nation began deteriorating through deliberate misinformation given out by multibillion-dollar tobacco industries – smoke this mild cigarette for 30 days and you are not going to suffer from any throat irritation. Superstars smoke Camels, including Dick Powell. They of course did not tell you that Dick Powell died of tobacco addiction, tobacco poisoning, and cancer. I am surprised they did not start up a campaign for harmless "smokies" for your babies, keep them well occupied with a cigarette in their mouths… But I think that would have been a bit too much for even a credulous public to swallow, no pun intended. People finally came to their senses in the 80s, and decided to stop smoking. Even though the insidious propaganda and advertisements of this multibillion dollar industry still continues. But then man has always been self-destructive and nobody can teach him otherwise. This book is for all those people, who want to know something about the harmful long-term effects of refined foods, including salt and sugar, and how you can live a healthy life, without these poisons in your diet.

Just 10 years ago, nobody bothered much about getting obsessed about weight loss in our particular neck of the woods, but now it seems that this problem has become a universal obsession. So I decided to write this book on the harmful effects of slimming and weight loss pills, so that if you have begun obsessing about weight loss with the help of these very dangerous and potentially harmful pills, at least you are going to get a deep insight into the psychological, physical, mental, and even emotional long-term negative effects, these can have on your mind, body and psyche. You are going to say, are you a doctor, show me your medical degree so that I can believe you. Under such circumstances, I am sorry, but I do not have a number of alphabets behind my name, to reassure you about what I say is true. But then, the medical association is promoting the usage of these weight loss pills, so that your health is ruined, and because I have been associated with the medical field as a hospital administrator, with a College Degree in Natural Sciences, [Zoology, Botany and Chemistry – three in 1 Degree…] with lots of knowledge of human physiology, biochemistry and the chemistry of pharmaceutical products manufactured in the labs, I believe I can give you good reasons why you should never ever think of ruining your health with weight loss pills and chemically manufactured slimming aids, which only served to deprive you of your own natural good health, in the long-term.

It is the first step outside your own safe and secure circle, which is rather daunting. So for most of us Going solo is not something which people normally do because let me tell you frankly, I have noticed that a number of my women friends, colleagues and acquaintances consider any sort of traveled to be a bore. Who really wants to undergo the hassle of being a woman all lonesome on her own traveling to a strange country or city? Traveling all alone in your own country or abroad, – you must be joking, DJ. This attitude was rather surprising, because I took travelling alone to be a part and parcel of my own lifestyle, while growing up and I definitely did not have any hassle in picking up my small travelling bag and catching my train, all alone on a long journey, even when I was 15. But then I was just going from one known destination to another known destination. So I did not bother much about the safety aspects, then, because I knew both destinations well. So for me, at that time, Going solo was the rule, and not an exception. But things changed later, while working. It was a different matter altogether. I never knew when the call would come from the top for me to get myself to such and such place by such and such time to attend such and such a meeting or meet XYZ. At that time, I always had a bag packed in a corner because I never knew when I had to drop everything and fly down to all corners of the compass on official duty. Sometimes I had my team of colleagues and juniors with me. Sometimes I was needed to go alone. And half of them just hated the idea of traveling because they were not used to it. Even when tickets, hotel stay, transport and all other facilities were laid out for them, they just did not want to go and see a brand-new place and experience a brand-new culture. How much they have missed out of life. This book is for all those adventurous souls who want to go out somewhere and experience new experiences, but there always daunted by the thought that it is not safe for women to travel anywhere in their own country or outside. And definitely not traveling solo in this world full of crime, and xenophobia. This book is to explode some of those myths. This book is also going to give you lots of useful information about safety tips for women traveling alone, based on my experiences, as well as the experiences of my other peripatetic friends. Also, there are some amusing anecdotes and episodes recounted to me by my well-traveled father, which may not exactly touch on safety, but can touch on some of the experiences that you may face when visiting a new country! So let the adventure begin.

Are You Generous in Your Thinking? Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction In my previous books, I have told my readers a number of tips and techniques on how popularity can be gained in a perfectly easy and above board manner. Anybody can be popular, with just a little bit of personality change. So what exactly is popularity, you may ask? In broad terms, it is a state when you are going to be admired, supported, and liked by a large number of people, as opposed to notoriety. Notoriety is also popularity of some sort, but it is a negative type of popularity, especially when you are going to be admired, supported, and liked by the negative elements in society, as someone daring, nasty, feckless, reckless, and dangerous to have around. This book is going to tell you all about tips and techniques on how you can be popular, and it does not depend on your age, gender, race, caste, creed, or political affiliation. It is just the innate tendency of human beings to be liked for their own selves, and popularity is the feeling when you know that a large number of people think you are a good sort of person to have around because they can depend on you, you are sincere, generous, supportive, and most of all, there is no hypocrisy about you in your dealings with the people around you.

If you found yourself in ancient China and happened to be a member of the court of the Emperor, you would show your status by holding a pair of perfectly and symmetrically shaped walnuts. They would be large in size and would be moved around on your palms, while you discuss weighty political matters with the rest of your peers. They would also be rotating and pressing walnuts while arguing the point with you. The ancient Chinese considered these walnuts pressing their palms to be aids in acupuncture, especially when this pressure promoted the circulation of blood. If you are in ancient Rome, and were in Julius Caesar’s circle, you could perhaps see one of his slaves using red-hot walnut shells as a rather painful depilatory in order to keep Caesar’s skin smooth and hairless. Even today, in many parts of the world, burnt and powdered walnut shells are used as a scrub to prevent growth of hair. A traditional and very politically incorrect old Irish saying says “, a dog, a woman, a Walnut tree, the more you beat them, the better they be .” That is definitely not true, because I could not “see” anybody beating a Walnut tree, though, I have been witness to animals and human beings being treated to violence often, and all over the world. If you were a friend of Leonardo da Vinci in medieval times, it is possible that you may have seen him doing some of his drawings with an ink made up of black walnut husks. Many of these drawings still survive today. Robin Hood in his mythological adventures always disguised himself by staining his skin with walnut juice obtained from crushed walnuts and walnut husks. This dye was brown in color, and was used for dyeing hair by the ancient Greeks and Romans.

Food in Pots Chapter 6. Caring for your Container Garden Chapter 7. Pretty Posies Chapter 8. Closing Remarks Author Bio Introduction Gardening is one of the easiest and best ways to feel accomplished, work off a bit of stress and make the world a little more beautiful…even if it’s just your own little corner of the world. Unfortunately, many people think gardening isn’t for them. They think they don’t have room, don’t have a green enough thumb or don’t have the time to garden. Are you one of these people? If so, this book is going to change your mind and make your world a more colorful, sweet-smelling place and add some flavor to your kitchen. The room necessary for container gardening can be as small as a ledge on a porch rail or the top of a nightstand. Or if you are fortunate enough to have a deck, patio, porch or even a bit of lawn space, container gardening is an option for you. As for having a green thumb, don’t worry. It’s more important that you have thumbs (and fingers) willing to get dirty. While it is true that some plants are more difficult to grow than others, there are dozens of plants that require minimal care while still providing color, pleasant scents and even air purifying benefits inside and outside of your home. The time it takes to plant and care for container gardens is also minimal. Even if you have numerous pots of plants, you will not have nearly as much time invested in those as you would in-ground flower beds and gardens. So you see, it is possible for you to enjoy growing plants and flowers in containers…successfully. If you already enjoy gardening but want to use something besides the standard clay pots seen everywhere and need a little help deciding what can and cannot be successfully grown in pots, this book is going to be your new go-to for creating gardens that will beautify your home and possibly even put food on your table. This book will introduce you to new and unique options for pots—things you might never have thought of using otherwise. You will also be challenged to get your creative juices flowing in mixing and matching plants for attractive containers that will be the envy of everyone in the neighborhood.
