Book excerpt: Have you ever lost a friendship and had no idea why? IF you had the chance to meet and talk with your heroes to get the answers... would you? IF they offered you advice and wisdom on how to solve a particular problem... would you listen? Do you have heroes but haven't yet learned how to tune into their messages, their accomplishments and their lives to find some measure of meaning in your own? Grandfather has returned to visit with Bob Anderson as he struggles with friendships. And this time, Grandfather has brought friends to help enlighten Bob as he ponders: Is the reality that "real" people experience, the only reality we have? Is everything else simply coincidental or accidental? Can our fictional heroes really impact our lives? We "try on parts of other people" to see if they fit. What does, we keep—what doesn't, we discard. In the process, we become who we are supposed to be. Nothing is coincidental or accidental... Grandfather and his friends impart ageless truths to lift your heart and open your eyes. When Grandfather Speaks Again... what will you hear? What will you learn?

Book excerpt: This book contains poems that issue mainly from the poet's experience and perspective as a First Nation Wampanoag member. Raised and educated by his non-native mother, he was also strongly influenced by his Wampanoag grandfather's stories and knowledge of the history of his people. In his thirties he began to travel to learn from elders of nations that lay distant from civilization in Canada and the north and southwest and found from them the wisdom he had found nowhere else. The elders asked him to go where he might be invited and make this wisdom available to all who asked for it, and for five decades, he has continued to travel wherever invited and speak to all who wish to listen.

Book excerpt: One minute, Bob Anderson was sitting at his desk in Houston, TX. The next, he was sitting with Grandfather, around a campfire, receiving ageless truths from Native American wisdom. With the wisdom of old, Grandfather explains how modern culture has ripped the joy and a sense of purpose from modern man. He reminds Bob of many things he already knew-he had just forgotten them. He reminded him that... "The easier a thing becomes to accomplish, the less it is valued... If the grass is greener on the other side, it might be because there is more buffalo dung there... Strive to see the best in others by demonstrating the best in yourself." Grandfather says that... "A man must take time to sharpen himself or, like a knife, he will become dull and useless... It's through struggles that you find strength... The lead wolf has responsibility for the well-being of the pack... Like spitting into the wind, the things you do come back to you." "Remember this," he says... "Life is not too hard; sometimes you're just too soft... Bravery is being afraid, yet still going on." Grandfather imparts ageless truths that can lift your soul and focus your endeavors. As Grandfather Speaks to you, be open to his wisdom; he might just ignite the flame of courage and bravery in you.

Book excerpt: About the Book Grandpa Speaks: A Time Lapse Diary was written by an elder, first-time Grandpa. In time lapse form, this diary relates facts, feelings, and often emotions in a way that one might hear from a close friend or relative over the phone, in a letter, or on a postcard. It may have multiple entries in a day, days in a row, or a week or two with nothing. Then, like with a best friend for life, the entries just pick up as though no span of time in the conversation has passed. It looks back, paints the present, and hints at the future through imagination. About the Author J.M. Loyd is just a guy from Arkansas who grew up in a small town in the central part of the state. A town with three colleges and a fine ditch. I split my young time between them. I was fortunate to attend school at the teacher’s college from nursery school through the fifth grade. It was quite an experience to be the guinea pig for the aspiring teachers standing in the hall behind the two-way mirrors. I swam on championship teams for high school and two of the colleges. Achieved first chair trumpet in the school band, was a member of three rock bands, lead singer in two. Stage actor, set designer and finder. I met my wife and put all of that away for our family. We worked together daily and raised our son. We married for keeps. We had stores in the footwear and fashion industry and helped her family run the summer camp for children at our homeplace. I was named “Captain”. The name stuck. I led adventures groups, was the camp deejay, announcer, song leader and counsellor. I am a licensed pilot, HAM, scuba diver, sailor, boater, builder, biker, herpetologist, gardener, fisherman, weatherman, salesman, locksmith, musician and lifeguard, mostly retired. But, most importantly, a late in life Grandpa, with a lot to share.

Book excerpt: In My Grandfather's Blessings, Rachel Naomi Remen, a cancer physician and master storyteller, uses her luminous stories to remind us of the power of our kindness and the joy of being alive. Dr. Remen's grandfather, an orthodox rabbi and scholar of the Kabbalah, saw life as a web of connection and knew that everyone belonged to him, and that he belonged to everyone. He taught her that blessing one another is what fills our emptiness, heals our loneliness, and connects us more deeply to life. Life has given us many more blessings than we have allowed ourselves to receive. My Grandfather's Blessings is about how we can recognize and receive our blessings and bless the life in others. Serving others heals us. Through our service we will discover our own wholeness—and the way to restore hidden wholeness in the world.

An Orthodox Jewish family of farmers struggles with the hardships of daily life, tension with their alien neighbors and the changing moods of nationalism and enlightenment that are sweeping through the countryside. Moments of sorrow and those of happiness punctuate the lives of these determined and devoted Jewish farmers, against a backdrop of sometimes frightening political change. The lives and the way of life, portrayed in this novel are told with a deep admiration and love, which serves as a literary testimony to a reality that, 50 years later, went up in flames.

Book excerpt: “One of the very few good, ambitious and important novels to have been done by the writers of my generation.” —Norman Mailer The lives of four Americans born between the world wars are intertwined to devastating effect in this gripping novel from one of the twentieth century’s most acclaimed authors. Beautiful, sad Ellen Beniger; her younger brother, Tom, a scholar unhappily moonlighting as a TV writer; the athletic amorist Guy Cinturon; and tough little Eddie Bissle, ex-infantryman and Ellen’s secret lover, struggle to come to grips with the limits of their futures and the scars of their pasts as they enter middle age. Will the physical, emotional, and spiritual violations they have endured remain with them forever, or can they be healed? As The Violated builds to its stunning climax, the story of four lost souls reveals heartbreaking truths about the dark side of post–World War II America.

Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE 2021 PULITZER PRIZE FOR FICTION NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER WASHINGTON POST, AMAZON, NPR, CBS SUNDAY MORNING, KIRKUS, CHICAGO PUBLIC LIBRARY, AND GOOD HOUSEKEEPING BEST BOOK OF 2020 Based on the extraordinary life of National Book Award-winning author Louise Erdrich’s grandfather who worked as a night watchman and carried the fight against Native dispossession from rural North Dakota all the way to Washington, D.C., this powerful novel explores themes of love and death with lightness and gravity and unfolds with the elegant prose, sly humor, and depth of feeling of a master craftsman. Thomas Wazhashk is the night watchman at the jewel bearing plant, the first factory located near the Turtle Mountain Reservation in rural North Dakota. He is also a Chippewa Council member who is trying to understand the consequences of a new “emancipation” bill on its way to the floor of the United States Congress. It is 1953 and he and the other council members know the bill isn’t about freedom; Congress is fed up with Indians. The bill is a “termination” that threatens the rights of Native Americans to their land and their very identity. How can the government abandon treaties made in good faith with Native Americans “for as long as the grasses shall grow, and the rivers run”? Since graduating high school, Pixie Paranteau has insisted that everyone call her Patrice. Unlike most of the girls on the reservation, Patrice, the class valedictorian, has no desire to wear herself down with a husband and kids. She makes jewel bearings at the plant, a job that barely pays her enough to support her mother and brother. Patrice’s shameful alcoholic father returns home sporadically to terrorize his wife and children and bully her for money. But Patrice needs every penny to follow her beloved older sister, Vera, who moved to the big city of Minneapolis. Vera may have disappeared; she hasn’t been in touch in months, and is rumored to have had a baby. Determined to find Vera and her child, Patrice makes a fateful trip to Minnesota that introduces her to unexpected forms of exploitation and violence, and endangers her life. Thomas and Patrice live in this impoverished reservation community along with young Chippewa boxer Wood Mountain and his mother Juggie Blue, her niece and Patrice’s best friend Valentine, and Stack Barnes, the white high school math teacher and boxing coach who is hopelessly in love with Patrice. In the Night Watchman, Louise Erdrich creates a fictional world populated with memorable characters who are forced to grapple with the worst and best impulses of human nature. Illuminating the loves and lives, the desires and ambitions of these characters with compassion, wit, and intelligence, The Night Watchman is a majestic work of fiction from this revered cultural treasure.
