Book Synopsis The Acquisition of Swahili by : Kamil Ud Deen
Download or read book The Acquisition of Swahili written by Kamil Ud Deen and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is the first study of the acquisition of Swahili as a first language. It focuses on the acquisition of inflectional affixes, with a particular emphasis on subject agreement and tense. Other inflectional affixes are also investigated, including object agreement and mood. The study surveys the adult dialect in question, Nairobi Swahili, discussing social, phonological, morphological and syntactic properties. Data, analyses and copious examples are presented of the naturalistic speech of four Swahili speaking children. The data are tested against six influential theories of child language, and the results show that processing and metrical theories of telegraphic speech fail to account for the observed patterns, while grammatical theories of child language fair significantly better. The data and analyses presented in this book are indispensable for linguists and psychologists interested in the acquisition of inflectional material and other cross-linguistic properties of child language.

Book Synopsis Case, Semantic Roles, and Grammatical Relations by : Petra Campe
Download or read book Case, Semantic Roles, and Grammatical Relations written by Petra Campe and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first of a series of 6 books dealing with case phenomena in different languages, both Indo- and non-Indo-European, resulting from work by a team of 20 specialists at the University of Leuven. It is the first time such a large-scale investigation into case has been undertaken, and a remarkable feature of the project is the use of computer corpora of authentic material. This bibliography presents the many dimensions involved in research into case and case-related phenomena. This includes not only morphological case markers, but also the crossconstituent (semantic and grammatical) relations expressed by morphological case or by its various counterparts; morpho-syntactic processes such as transitivity and passivization; and pragmatic and textual considerations. In addition, the bibliography reflects the implications of case research for other disciplines, such as foreign language teaching and artificial intelligence. More than 6000 publications are listed. An extensive Subject Index provides easy access to all the topics and major concepts covered. A Language Index and a Guide to Languages/Language Families conclude the book. The other volumes in the series include The Dative (2 vols), The Genitive, The Nominative and Accusative, and Non-nuclear Cases.

Book Synopsis Swahili Learners' Reference Grammar by : Katrina Daly Thompson
Download or read book Swahili Learners' Reference Grammar written by Katrina Daly Thompson and published by Eagle's Nest Publications. This book was released on 2001 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference grammar is written for speakers of English who are learning Swahili. Because many language learners are not familiar with the grammatical terminology, this book explains the basic terminology and concepts of English grammar that are necessary for understanding the grammar of Swahili. It assumes no formal knowledge of English grammar and is written in very simple language. This book is designed to be used as a supplement to other Swahili language textbooks, and provides more extensive explanations of the grammar lessons presented in textbooks. The manual is arranged by topic to help learners locate information easily. The book is organized in 55 chapters with a section for each part of speech: nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, conjunctions, and prepositions. There are also sections for sentences and miscellaneous. References appear in footnotes throughout the text. Contains a glossary, an index, and an answer key. (KFT)
