Philology, the science of the history and construction of language, includes, among others: phonetics, a science of articulate sounds; etymology, a science of the derivation of words; and grammar, a science of the use of words. Grammar is that science of language which defines its parts and states the laws governing their uses in the sen tence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sentence Improvement: A Practice Book in Applied Grammar This study involves not only a knowledge of sen tence elements and grammatical structure, but also a sense of their comparative values, together with practice in criticizing and improving the pupil's own work. Grammar treated in this way leads naturally to a consideration of the principles of composition work. In actual speech and writing the two are so closely related as to be inseparable. It follows that the work in this book involves many of the simpler rhetorical principles. The book, therefore, fills \a natural place between the early language and grammar work of the pupil and his later work in rhetoric and composition in the secondary school. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Grammar of the English Language In this new and revised edition of my Grammar, besides availing myself of whatever new light the last seventeen years have thrown upon the principles of the science, I have given much greater prominence than before to the practical exercises. The examples, both those for illustration and those for practice, are more numerous than in the original edition; and they are in each case brought into immediate connection with the rule or the definition which they are intended to illustrate. A child of ordinary capacity can hardly go through these exercises without becoming thoroughly familiar with the principles which they exemplify. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exercises on Words: Designed as a Course of Practice on the Rudiments of Grammar and Rhetoric The analytic method of presenting the subject of grammar, originally introduced in the schools of Germany, subsequently in those of England, and, more recently, by Professors Alpheus Crosby and S. S. Greene, in those of our own country, is doing much to revolutionise our modes of teaching, in this department, and to diffuse more philosophic and rational views on the whole subject of grammatical instruction. To the benefits, however, arising from the use of any text-book, an extensive course of practical grammar, requiring the actual study and use of language, in daily exercises, is an important addition, without which, little progress can be made towards the acknowledged end of grammar. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in Language and Grammar, Vol. 1 The series, of which this is the first book, has been prepared in the belief that the best training in the use of language is afforded by a coordination of language lessons and grammar. It is a mistake to require pupils to spend a few years upon language lessons, and then a few years upon grammar. The two subjects should be pursued as one study, and those parts that help each other most should be brought together every week in lessons and exercises. To study language as an art without knowing at the same time something of grammar as a science, is to follow a process purely empirical, and to deprive the teacher of a vocabulary with which to communicate his suggestions to the pupil. The study of grammar with out practice in expression is, for the young, dry and unfruitful. Its results at best are those of logic and not of rhetoric. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief English Grammar Since this book is designed for the pupil rather than for the teacher, all suggestions as to the teaching of English grammar have been conveyed rather by implication than by specific recommendation. The text itself is, however, designed to indicate a general method of presentation, vari able in detail at the will of the individual teacher. Each chapter, it will be evident, presents not the material for any fixed number of class recitations, but rather a single subject, divisible according to the available time, the capacity of the students, and other practical considerations. These conditions will necessarily determine the particular assign ment for any given recitation; but they should not be al lowed to destroy the essential unity of a subject. The summary and definitions following each lesson may well be used by the teacher to test the students' knowledge of that subject as a whole. Passages printed in brevier are supple mentary and subordinate in importance, and hence may be used or omitted at discretion. The questions and exercises are suggestive merely, inviting both modification and sup plement by the teacher. The sentence, as the thought unit, is the starting-point for the study of composition. It should be regarded, at the outset, not as the result of a mechanical manipulation of grammatical elements, but as an organism, an organic whole, reproducing in words a thought in the mind, as a-photograph reproduces a scene. It is always our first concern to see the thought clearlyfto get it clearly focused in our minds; to this everything else is secondary, - the grammar, the parts of speech, the syntax that are so often the bugbear of the student because they are approached wrongly. In the discussion that follows, we shall look first to the thought. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory and Practice of Creole Grammar AS it was at first my intention to dispense with a preface, I inserted here and there, in the body of thisgrk, such brief exposi tions of its plan as I thought desirable. Having so done, I che riched the expectation of avoiding the ordeal of self-obtrusion', which an author must pass through in a formal prologue to the public. But my hope of escape was delusive; for the diver. Sity and extravagance of purpose which rumour imputed to me, in connexion with this undertaking, soon made it obvious that I must, in fairness to myself, explain the motives which induced me to attempt a work of the kind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advanced English Grammar Through Composition The fact that most of those who will use this book will probably be studying one or more foreign languages, has caused more than usual attention to be paid to the points of most importance for that work, such as the Prepositions, the Cases, the Subjunctive Mood, and Clause constructions and their equivalents. The subject of Prosody has also been treated in considerable detail, as the author has found by experience that practically all pupils can attain considerable facility in versifying, and that such exercises are most useful for gaining command over language and for training the taste of the pupils at an age when paraphrasing, etc, are beginning to be outgrown. For this, however, some thing much more thorough than the usual treatment Of Prosody in Grammars is necessary, and this the author has endeavoured to supply. The Historical Sketch of the English Language contains sufficient anglo-saxon and Chaucerian grammar to serve as reference for the explanations of grammatical forms throughout the book; and the account of the Vocabulary and of Word Building will, it is hoped, be found sufficient and self-contained. A chapter on Figures of Speech has also been added, so that information and practice on all the subjects usually included under English Grammar may be found in a single text-book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Business English Its Principles and Practice Part I also presents the important elements of good English. Grammar and punctuation are treated not as a system of rules, but as a structural part of composi tion. This method has been adopted not only because the business man is not interested in grammar and punctuation except as they are applied, but also because experience has shown that students obtain a better working mastery of good sentence structure and diction when it is taught In this way. The experienced teacher knows that a knowledge of rules and the ability to write clearly are often far apart in actual practice. No essen tial principle of syntax or punctuation has been omitted. Hence there have been presented at the outset the two main divisions of the sentence the complete subject and the complete predicate.
