Book excerpt: Auger electron spectroscopy and chemical depth profiling by argon sputtering were employed to obtain the grain boundary segregation profiles of various aluminum alloys. Samples of both commercial (7075, 7050, and 7049) and high purity alloys based on the Al-Zn-Mg ternary in different heat treatments were examined following in situ fracturing in the spectrometer. Segregation profiles indicate that the grain boundaries in these alloys are considerably enriched in Mg and Zn. In commercial alloys, however, the grain boundaries are depleted in the minor elements Fe, Cu and Si. AES spectra of oxide films formed on Al-Zn-Mg alloys indicate that the enhanced segregation along the grain boundaries results in a film rich in Mg. It is postulated that incorporation of extensive amounts of these alloying elements into the film renders it less protective and leads to enhanced hydrogen entry and embrittlement by stress corrosion cracking.

AES studies coupled with plasmon-loss measurements have enabled us to identify the chemical state of the segregants present on the grain boundary. These studies show that in the asquenched condition, the Mg and Zn segregated along the grain boundaries are present in solid solution. In the peak-and over-aged conditions, all the Zn is incorporated into the MgZn2 particles while a major fraction of Mg is present as free Mg. In the as-quenched condition, the segregants are confined to about 50 to 100 angstrom from the grain boundary. Utilizing the vacancy solute drag model, it is possible to qualitatively account for the observed extent of solute segregation. The implications to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of the free Mg observed on the grain boundaries under all heat treatment conditions can be analyzed by proposing Mg-H complex formation. Consequently this year's efforts were focused on studying the effect of the Mg/Zn ratio on the SCC Susceptibility of Al-Zn-Mg alloys.

Mechanisms germane to establishing the conditions for stress-corrosion cracking in heat-treatable alloys during precipitation hardening are covered. A 7075 A1 alloy and an A1-Zn-Mg ternary alloy were used in construction of a stress-corrosion model. The model showed that the stress corrosion cracking susceptibility of A1 alloys becomes reduced if one or more of the following can be realized: (1) elimination of the precipitation-free zone, PFZ, through proper heat treatment; (2) inducement of the formation of primary precipitates in the PFZ to enhance hardening; (3) inducement of the segregation of solute atoms to produce sufficient grain boundary hardening into the PFZ; (4) reduction of the PFZ width to a practical minimum; and (5) addition of an additive such as Cd, Sn and In to initiate precipitation of CuAl2 in the PFZ during initial aging. The resistance to stress-corrosion cracking will be increased because of: (1) the virtual elimination of the difference in mechanical properties between the PFZ and the train interior due to differences in thermal history, and (2) due to the presence of Cd, the reduction of the anodic effect at the grain boundaries. Book excerpt: The major findings from a comprehensive study on the role of microstructure on the susceptibility to environmental embrittlement of high strength aluminum alloys are presented and discussed. Most of the studies used commercial 7075, or a high purity equiaxed version, HP7075, or a similar powder version 7090. Through the innovative use of loading mode and straining electrode test, stress corrosion cracking was shown to be controlled by the introduction and internal distribution of hydrogen, particularly to grain boundaries. This was the case for the underaged and peak aged microstructures, with the latter being the most susceptible. The SCC behavior of the even more resistant overaged microstructure was shown to be controlled by anodic dissolution processes, predominantly associated with slip bands. Aluminum alloys were also shown to be susceptible to embrittlement under conditions of cathodic polarization correcting a widely held belief that concomitant anodic processes are required. Studies using controlled microstructures were able to rank the importance of different microstructural features to help develop alloy design strategies for more environmentally resistant alloys--the most effective features are those grain interior precipitates which promote fine, homogeneous slip either by reduced particle cutting or enhanced dislocation generation; fine, grain boundary precipitate free zones were found not to be very important, except in their role in reducing the local strength of the boundary region.

Book excerpt: A further clarification of the mechanism of stress-corrosion cracking in 7075 aluminum alloy was obtained, particularly with regard to the role of dislocations in the mechanism and to the relationship between dislocation mobility and susceptibility to stress-corrosion cracking; high dislocation mobility reduces susceptibility. It was demonstrated during stress-corrosion tests on 7075-T73 specimens that had undergone prior plastic deformation, that the introduction of dislocations alone did not lower the dislocation mobility sufficiently to diminish the stress-corrosion resistance. This is in contrast to similar experiments with -T6 specimens, wherein precipitation was induced by similar deformation and the mobility was reduced sufficiently to lower the stress-corrosion resistance. An important role for immobilized dislocations was also suggested by a theoretical calculation of the stress field around an edge dislocation which neighbors a grain boundary precipitate. This calculation, which was based only on elasticity theory and thus precluded plastic flow, indicated that a large tensile stress, theoretically as high as 250,000 psi, could act normal to the precipitate-matrix interface. When the capacity for plastic flow (i.e., the dislocation mobility) was intentionally reduced by notching a stress-corrosion specimen, a rapid failure could be induced in normally resistant 7075-T73 alloy.
