Book Synopsis The Michigan Murders by : Edward Keyes
Download or read book The Michigan Murders written by Edward Keyes and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edgar Award Finalist: The true story of a serial killer who terrorized a midwestern town in the era of free love—by the coauthor of The French Connection. In 1967, during the time of peace, free love, and hitchhiking, nineteen-year-old Mary Terese Fleszar was last seen alive walking home to her apartment in Ypsilanti, Michigan. One month later, her naked body—stabbed over thirty times and missing both feet and a forearm—was discovered, partially buried, on an abandoned farm. A year later, the body of twenty-year-old Joan Schell was found, similarly violated. Southeastern Michigan was terrorized by something it had never experienced before: a serial killer. Over the next two years, five more bodies were uncovered around Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, Michigan. All the victims were tortured and mutilated. All were female students. After multiple failed investigations, a chance sighting finally led to a suspect. On the surface, John Norman Collins was an all-American boy—a fraternity member studying elementary education at Eastern Michigan University. But Collins wasn’t all that he seemed. His female friends described him as aggressive and short tempered. And in August 1970, Collins, the “Ypsilanti Ripper,” was arrested, found guilty, and sentenced to life in prison without chance of parole. Written by the coauthor of The French Connection, The Michigan Murders delivers a harrowing depiction of the savage murders that tormented a small midwestern town.
Book Synopsis New Frontiers in the Study of the Global African Diaspora by : Rita Kiki Edozie
Download or read book New Frontiers in the Study of the Global African Diaspora written by Rita Kiki Edozie and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology presents a new study of the worldwide African diaspora by bringing together diverse, multidisciplinary scholarship to address the connectedness of Black subject identities, experiences, issues, themes, and topics, applying them dynamically to diverse locations of the Blackworld—Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, and the United States. The book underscores three dimensions of African diaspora study. First is a global approach to the African diaspora, showing how globalism underscores the distinctive role that Africa plays in contributing to world history. Second is the extension of African diaspora study in a geographical scope to more robust inclusions of not only the African continent but also to uncharted paths and discoveries of lesser-known diaspora experiences and identities in Latin America and the Caribbean. Third is the illustration of universal unwritten cultural representations of humanities in the African diasporas that show the distinctive humanities’ disciplinary representations of Black diaspora imaginaries and subjectivities. The contributing authors inductively apply these themes to focus the reader’s attention on contemporary localized issues and historical arenas of the African diaspora. They engage their findings to critically analyze the broader norms and dimensions that characterize a given set of interrelated criteria that have come to establish parameters that increasingly standardize African diaspora studies.
Book Synopsis Armenian Proverbs and Expressions by : Susan Kadian Gopigian
Download or read book Armenian Proverbs and Expressions written by Susan Kadian Gopigian and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Susan Kadian Gopigian began collecting Armenian proverbs many decades ago when she lived in Delray, Michigan. She collected hundreds of proverbs in the Armenian language, then transliterated them using the English alphabet and also translated them into English to make them accessible to all readers, whether they know Armenian or not. The author selected certain proverbs for inclusion because she heard them frequently or because they reflect the former Armenian way of life. That she was able to meet the challenges involved in collecting and editing Armenian proverbs can only be described as a true labor of love.
Book Synopsis Salsa Consciente by : Andrés Espinoza Agurto
Download or read book Salsa Consciente written by Andrés Espinoza Agurto and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2021-12-01 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the significations and developments of the Salsa consciente movement, a Latino musico-poetic and political discourse that exploded in the 1970s but then dwindled in momentum into the early 1990s. This movement is largely linked to the development of Nuyolatino popular music brought about in part by the mass Latino migration to New York City beginning in the 1950s and the subsequent social movements that were tied to the shifting political landscapes. Defined by its lyrical content alongside specific sonic markers and political and social issues facing U.S. Latinos and Latin Americans, Salsa consciente evokes the overarching cultural-nationalist idea of Latinidad (Latin-ness). Through the analysis of over 120 different Salsa songs from lyrical and musical perspectives that span a period of over sixty years, the author makes the argument that the urban Latino identity expressed in Salsa consciente was constructed largely from diasporic, deterritorialized, and at times imagined cultural memory, and furthermore proposes that the Latino/Latin American identity is in part based on African and Indigenous experience, especially as it relates to Spanish colonialism. A unique study on the intersection of Salsa and Latino and Latin American identity, this volume will be especially interesting to scholars of ethnic studies and musicology alike.

Book Synopsis Making Animal Meaning by : Linda Kalof
Download or read book Making Animal Meaning written by Linda Kalof and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An elucidating collection of ten original essays, Making Animal Meaning reconceptualizes methods for researching animal histories and rethinks the contingency of the human-animal relationship. The vibrant and diverse field of animal studies is detailed in these interdisciplinary discussions, which include voices from a broad range of scholars and have an extensive chronological and geographical reach. These exciting discourses capture the most compelling theoretical underpinnings of animal significance while exploring meaning-making through the study of specific spaces, species, and human-animal relations. A deeply thoughtful collection — vital to understanding central questions of agency, kinship, and animal consumption — these essays tackle the history and philosophy of constructing animal meaning.
