Further research was required to discover insights to the workforce readiness gap. This concurrent mixed methods study explored what competencies influenced employer's perceptions of the work-readiness of Information Systems (ISYS) undergraduate students and discovered ISYS graduates' and current ISYS students' perceptions of their work-readiness. Participants consisted of a convenience sample including 69 ISYS program upperclassmen, 20 ISYS program alumni, and 8 employers of the ISYS program graduates. ISYS program alumni completed an online Qualtrics survey to measure the participants' perception of their workforce preparedness. ISYS program upperclassmen completed a similar paper-based survey to measure the students' current perception of their workforce readiness. Employers of ISYS program graduates were interviewed to determine (1) how they defined workforce readiness, (2) the competencies associated with being workforce-ready, and (3) the degree to which the Sam M. Walton College of Business graduates demonstrated workforce readiness. The instrument used in this study was adopted from the employer survey used in the Are They Really Ready to Work?: Employers' Perspectives on the Basic Knowledge and Applied Skills of New Entrants to the 21st Century U.S. Workforce report by Casner-Lotto, Barrington, & Wright (2006) and the Ill-Prepared U.S. Workforce: Exploring the Challenges of Employer-Provided Workforce Readiness Training report by Casner-Lotto, Rosenblum, & Wright (2009). The reports were produced by ASTD, The Conference Board, Corporate Voices for Working Families, Partnership for 21st Century Skills, and SHRM. Research findings demonstrated 91% of ISYS program alumni and 86.9% of upperclassmen believed they were adequately to well prepared for the workforce by the ISYS program. Additionally, 75% of ISYS graduates' employers felt the students were adequately to somewhat well prepared for the workforce. Workforce readiness skills measured in this study included English Language (spoken), Writing in English, Problem Solving, Critical Thinking, Collaboration/Working with Others, Computer/Technical, Project Management, Knowledge within Major, General Business Knowledge, Willingness to Learn, Ability to Learn, Responsibility/Dependability, Initiative, Attitude Toward Work, Attendance/Punctuality, and Other skills not mentioned.

Book excerpt: Connecting college to career has been one of the goals of higher education since the founding in 1636 of Harvard University, the oldest institution of higher education in the United States. A skilled workforce is still dependent on the preparation that colleges offer their students. However, in today's rapidly-changing technological and global world, many businesses are finding that college graduates they hire are under-prepared to enter the workforce with the needed skill sets (Abernathy, 2014; McIntire & McLester, 2006; Needleman, 2014; Zeiss, 2005). They may be prepared academically, but may be lacking in soft skills, such as analytical reasoning, interpersonal skills, self-discipline, managing time, money, and resources, as well as communication and technology skills. This research study used survey research and quantitative methods to determine the differences between employer's perceptions of needed skill sets and college students' perceptions of acquired skill sets obtained during their studies. This correlational quantitative research study design identified nine skill sets obtained within the Employability Skills Framework (U.S. Department of Education, 2012) with 39 subscale identifying factors or skills. A sample of small, medium, and large corporations with offices in a large city in the United States was surveyed using a Likert scale to determine which skills identified within each set of skills were most needed in their organizations as they hire newly-graduated college students. A student survey was administrated at one large four-year public research university as they prepared to graduate and enter the workforce. The potential threats to validity and reliability included low-response rate, non-response, outliers, and adequate size of employer and student samples. The survey questionnaire provided the data needed to interpret the results. Survey results were collected via a web-based survey, SurveyGizmo, which exported data in SPSS format. All statistical analyses of the quantitative results were conducted with the help of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences software (IBM SPSS) Version 22. This study shed light upon the potential need for higher education administrators and employers to build meaningful partnerships for a mutual goal: to ensure that graduates possess the skill sets desired in the current workforce and beyond.

Book excerpt: Postsecondary graduates often do not have the skills needed for entry level employment in today's workforce. Postsecondary students should have a curriculum that is relevant to today's workforce needs to increase the graduates marketability and success in our global economy. This study examined the workplace readiness skills desired by the high-tech industries in Alabama compared to the perceived importance of those skills from educators in Alabama's Two-Year College System and the integration of those skills in the curricula. It was believed that there was no significant difference in the perceptions of educators and industry supervisors in reference to their perceptions of workplace skills and integrating those skills into the curricula. A web-based survey was sent to a select group of high-tech industry supervisors and educators from technical programs in Alabama. The findings indicate that high-tech firms are looking for people who have basic workplace skills and competencies that include but are not limited to the following: honesty and integrity, service to customers, responsibility, ability to work in teams, listening skills, and the ability to solve problems. There was general agreement among the educators and supervisors on the importance of 22 of the 36 workplace readiness skills. However, for 14 of the workplace readiness skills, there was sufficient evidence to reject the null hypothesis. Industry supervisors indicated that a worker having the following workplace skills were not as important to their operation as the educator group thought they were: 1) selecting materials and facilities usage, 2) acquiring and evaluating information, 3) organizing and maintaining information, 4) understanding systems, 5) selecting technology, 6) maintaining and troubleshooting equipment, 7) reads well, 8) making good decisions, 9) seeing things in the mind's eye, 10) knows how to learn, 11) knows how to reason, 12) applies technology to tasks, 13) does simple arithmetic, and 14) has self-esteem. Future research is needed to determine whether the findings in this study can be replicated. The researcher recommends expanding the research to include more participants in the study.
