Book excerpt: A THEOLOGY FOR ARTISANS OF A NEW HUMANITY Volume 1 The Community Called Church Volume 2 Grace and the Human Condition Volume 3 Our Idea of God Volume 4 The Sacraments Today Volume 5 Evolution and Guilt For many generations Christians have considered sin almost exclusively in terms of the individual person: my sins and your sins. These sins, moreover, have been thought to have their roots in our fallen human nature, the consequence of original sin. Recently, however, the bishops and theologians of Latin America have begun to speak of sinful structures, sinful institutions, and even sinful societies. These terms sound rather strange to North American ears, but an understanding of them is vital if Christians here are to live up to their calling to be both prophetic and creative agents for change within their communities-global as well as national. These communities are scarred by sinful structures and sinful institutions, if we but had the eyes to see them as they are. For the love taught and lived by Christ has a creative obligation, in Segundo's phrase: the obligation to move evolution forward into ever more truly human forms and structures. I have come to give life, and that more abundantly. Segundo's reflections on the nature and meaning of that life make Evolution and Guilt a signal contribution to pastoral as well as political theology. It is paramount, however, a breakthrough in Christian moral theology, speaking to the major issues of our times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study shows how all the elements of Segundo's theology, his evolutionary understanding of grace and sin, his liberationist hermeneutic, his original treatment of the significance of the historical Jesus, his radically historical eschatology, converge to focus on one essential point: the works of human action that are built of love have absolute value in the eyes of God. They contribute to realization of the eschaton, where they constitute the manifestation of human freedom and the created substance of the glory of God.

Book Synopsis An Alternative Vision by : Roger Haight SJ
Download or read book An Alternative Vision written by Roger Haight SJ and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Alternative Vision: An Interpretation of Liberation Theology offers a complete overview of the liberation theology movement that is ideally suited for a thorough study of the major questions and important theologians that have contributed to the debate. It outlines and brings together into a single unified account liberation theology's alternate vision for providing the possibility of meaningful historical existence for humans in the world today. The author translates the Christian vision of liberation theologians from Latin America into more general theological and cultural categories familiar to the English-speaking world, then shows how that vision makes a unified interpretation of Christian doctrine. First, liberation theology must be seen as a response to massive human suffering witnessed throughout the world today. This human agony is largely caused by human beings and the social and political structures we create, and liberation theology addresses this dilemma using the tradition of Christian wisdom and direct imperatives that have universal, transcultural significance. The second goal is achieved by showing the connection between liberation principles and the major doctrines of Christian belief, including God, Jesus Christ, faith, grace, the church, sacraments, ministry, and spirituality.
Book Synopsis Structures of Grace by : Kevin Ahern
Download or read book Structures of Grace written by Kevin Ahern and published by Orbis Books. This book was released on 2015-03-01 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his encyclical Sollicitudo rei socialis ("On Social Concerns," 1984) Pope St. John Paul II wrote of "structures of sin" operating in the world and how Christian solidarity held the key to confronting and overcoming them. In Structures of Grace teacher and activist Kevin Ahern profiles successful Catholic organizations from around the globe--some well-known, some less so--that embody Christian solidarity by addressing the urgent human issues of our day: immigration and human rights; healthcare and housing; food, agriculture, and water; war, peace and reconciliation. In telling the stories of organizations such as Jesuit Refugee Service, the Young Christian Workers, Plowshares and Network, Dr. Ahern sheds light on the mission, theology, and outreach of hundreds of such organizations, offering church professionals, students, educators, and volunteers a "directory of grace" at work in the world today.
