It is a question that has been asked for centuries. In her book, Poems of Faith in the Garden of Hope and Grace, the author writes in her first poem “Genesis”, that God created all things good the way He envisioned it. He is omniscient—all knowing. God, the Creator, had the solution to mankind’s fall before He established the universe. He knew He’d present Himself on the cross and destroy the work of the devil. These poems speak of God’s hope and grace, how we can take our stand against the enemy and how one day He’ll reestablish a new Paradise!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manuscript is dedicated to my mother, the late minister Rose Marie Johnson. This book does not bear any reflection on any given person or place. The contents are my own personal perspectives with regard to the Bible—expressions, accounts, expectations, inspirations, and anticipated positive outcomes. The poems are short and long stories. They are simple and relatable. In addition, they’re based solely on my personal experiences, beliefs, events, and hypotheticals. So when you read this manuscript, remember that these poems and stories reflect years of events related to hardships, heartbreaks, and triumphs. However, with the help of God, prayers, doctors, caring people, and grace, I was able to recover and fight my way back. The road ahead is still long, but my Lord and Savior will be with me every step of the way.

African & African American Studies. Family reunions are special occasions, a time of connections, reflections, of meeting new members, remembering those no longer with us, more than a little gossip (a good reason not to miss one if you don't want to be the one talked about!) and (mostly) good-natured kidding, occasional recriminations and grievances aired or confined to knowing side glances, and perhaps most importantly, the chance to pass on and keep alive the history and lore of the family from one generation to the next. Grace C. Ocasio's FAMILY REUNION is all of these things, and in reading this book we are privileged guests at just such an event, invited to hear the stories of her relatives across multiple generations. Because this is an account of an African-American family, it is necessarily in part a chronicle of racism and injustice and thus a contribution to the poetry of documentary witness. There are moments of tragedy (a child permanently brain damaged by being dropped by a nurse at birth) and indignity (a woman denied a PhD by Harvard because of her race), but also triumphs (one man becomes a celebrated physician, and many in the family graduate from college and go on to successful professional careers--including the author). These poems speak candidly of the experience of being Black in America. But that is not all that they do. What they reveal most of all is how this one family's story manages to be both uniquely their own and simultaneously universal, because we can all recognize ourselves and our own messy histories in these pages, whatever our race or origin. We've all encountered that uncle, that grandmother in our own families; we've heard the lectures (or given them ourselves) on hair and clothing, behavior and expectations, the suitability of suitors, all the friction at generational boundaries. Now, more than ever, we need to be reminded that we are all one family--however dysfunctional. To say that Ocasio does this with grace may be a pun, but it is also the truth. The book ends with a brief prose account of a family reunion that is hilariously chaotic, leaving the author with "hysteria welling in my throat." Well, that's family for you! But what a treat it is to get to know this one.

Book excerpt: Carol Grace's first book, "Reflections of a life well spent" was autobiographical in nature, while "More than a Memory" is more diverse, including poems of nature, poems written as a tribute to others, and poems of faith and inspiration. Mrs. Grace says this about her newest collection of poems: "More than a Memory" deals with everyday observations and the simple joy of letting words spill from my thoughts and onto paper. I have had a love affair with words all of my life. Poetry happens when thought becomes image, image becomes word, and words join together to form meaning that is often unique to each reader. It is my hope that "More Than a Memory" will trigger your own fond memories, and moreover, that you would be encouraged, if not challenged, to continue to make new memories, not letting the days get away from you." "More than a Memory" is not a book for the literary few, but for everyone who loves to hear a good story. Poetry has the ability to convey an entire story with an economy of words. You might find yourself reading the entire book in one sitting, but more likely you will read just a few poems at a time, luxuriating over the way the words make you feel. Although the subject matter may be bleak, the poem can still be beautiful because of word choice and the way it sounds when read aloud. Carol's poetry is written with the knowledge that there is power in the word, and we must learn to choose our words wisely. May the words in "More than a Memory" inspire you, bring a laugh or two, and comfort you.

Book excerpt: The New York Times 100 Notable Books of 2020 Time Magazine's 100 Must-Read Books of 2020 NPR's Best Books of 2020 National Book Award in Poetry, Longlist Frank Sanchez Book Award After her mother died, poet Victoria Chang refused to write elegies. Rather, she distilled her grief during a feverish two weeks by writing scores of poetic obituaries for all she lost in the world. In Obit, Chang writes of “the way memory gets up after someone has died and starts walking.” These poems reinvent the form of newspaper obituary to both name what has died (“civility,” “language,” “the future,” “Mother’s blue dress”) and the cultural impact of death on the living. Whereas elegy attempts to immortalize the dead, an obituary expresses loss, and the love for the dead becomes a conduit for self-expression. In this unflinching and lyrical book, Chang meets her grief and creates a powerful testament for the living. "When you lose someone you love, the world doesn’t stop to let you mourn. Nor does it allow you to linger as you learn to live with a gaping hole in your heart. Indeed, this daily indifference to being left behind epitomizes the unique pain of grieving. Victoria Chang captures this visceral, heart-stopping ache in Obit, the book of poetry she wrote after the death of her mother. Although Chang initially balked at writing an obituary, she soon found herself writing eulogies for the small losses that preceded and followed her mother’s death, each one an ode to her mother’s life and influence. Chang also thoughtfully examines how she will be remembered by her own children in time."—Time Magazine

Book excerpt: A new book of poetry from internationally acclaimed, award-winning and bestselling author Margaret Atwood In Dearly, Margaret Atwood’s first collection of poetry in over a decade, Atwood addresses themes such as love, loss, the passage of time, the nature of nature and - zombies. Her new poetry is introspective and personal in tone, but wide-ranging in topic. In poem after poem, she casts her unique imagination and unyielding, observant eye over the landscape of a life carefully and intuitively lived. While many are familiar with Margaret Atwood’s fiction—including her groundbreaking and bestselling novels The Handmaid’s Tale, The Testaments, Oryx and Crake, among others—she has, from the beginning of her career, been one of our most significant contemporary poets. And she is one of the very few writers equally accomplished in fiction and poetry. This collection is a stunning achievement that will be appreciated by fans of her novels and poetry readers alike.

Book excerpt: It was a day wherein we deeply felt Life´s twin blade of beauty and of brutality. In the midst of this desert of destruction, we blossomed as a rose of rarer beauty. Our faith grew exceedingly and our love beautifully abounded. God´s grace was sufficient, for on that notable day His strength was made perfect in our weakness. Though our lives were forever changed, we were forever united as a nation. Such time of sorrow failed to fade America the Beautiful. Religious Hate came forward out of the shadows so we could see it. We put on the breastplate of faith and love and survived the attack of the enemy. This book is a timeless treasure of memorial poems of September 11. So read We Remember and remember not only the brutality of religious haters but also the beauty of a merciful God. Author's Other book: Heaven Help Us (A Book of Poems) ISBN: 1-591605-22-9 (Hardback) Pages: 332 Subject: POETRY/General Book Description: As believers, we are to cast all our cares upon God because He cares for us. The vital importance of this is seen in light of the perplexing problems plaguing mankind. In the valley of decision, many find it difficult to exercise faith in God. Subconsciously, many consider Him unapproachable. But the fact of the matter is that God is very concerned about us. He sovereignly claims He cares for us, yet many are doubtful of such a claim, so many prayerless believers erroneously believe they must face life alone. Written by L. A. Jones, this book gives four wonderful blessings enjoyment, enlightenment, endearment, and encouragement that bring every believer into the full assurance of God´s care for His beloved children on earth. As you perceive the caring nature of God, you will be challenged to resist self-reliance and begin trusting in Him wholeheartedly. Your prayer life will deepen, your walk of faith will be transformed, and your cup of blessings will run over. Allow God to minister to you in a wonderful way and experience His intimacy and intervention. Read Heaven Help Us and discover a diamond mine of daily inspiration that will continually bless your soul. Book Excerpt: Come and Hear Come into the holiest place. Book excerpt: Dedicated Poems to Our Loved Ones in Heaven represents all the emotions at play when there is sudden death. My inspiration for doing this book was due to my parents passing away suddenly. I had all these emotions going on and wanted to share the grief with others who have lost loved ones. We must always remember that our loved ones never die, but always live on in our hearts, and these poems do come directly from the heart. I didn’t feel grief straight away. Then all these poems started to come to me. It was like my parents were communicating to me to do it. My dad was so happy when I was going to get married that he bought me my dress. But he couldn’t walk me down the aisle, as he passed away before the big day. My husband-to-be Tony and I decided to hold the wedding on my dad’s birthday. My mum ended up giving me away with my sister Ann as my bridesmaid. We did not forget my dad that day and raised a glass to wish him a happy birthday and wish he was with us. Please enjoy and take comfort from these poems and remember that you are never alone in grief.
