Patton combined his understanding of maneuver warfare (gained from cavalry) and the firepower of modern combined arms to revolutionize American warfare in World War II. Patton called it "Grab them by the nose and kick them in the pants." This paper examines Patton's close coordination between Third Army and XIX Tactical Air Command as he races across Europe. Patton's combined arms operational maneuver has heavily influenced American military doctrine as demonstrated by the "Shock and Awe" campaign in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Book excerpt: Dwight Eisenhower once said of General George Patton, "He was one of those men born to be a soldier... whose gallantry and dramatic personality inspired all he commanded to deed of great valour." In this account of Patton and his Third Army, Wallace places Patton within the context of the army's operation and day-to-day movements as it roared through France, Luxembourg, and Germany. Wallace, Patton's former assistant chief of staff, draws his facts from stenographic records of daily staff meetings, and provides insights and details unavailable to other historians.

Book excerpt: Ol’ Blood and Guts’ head of liaison officers tells the story of the famous general as he saw him at the head of the Third Army during World War II. “THE powerful Third Army with its famous leader, General George S. Patton, Jr., which in ten months roared through France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Czechoslovakia and Austria, crushing at every turn the German war machine which in 1940-42 was considered the most powerful army in the world, have now passed into history. Before the memory of the great days of these campaigns as well as the close association with this famous American fighter grow dim, it might be interesting to jot down the story of the events as they unfolded and a few personal impressions of our leader. This therefore is the story of The Third Army and its great commander.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Cavalry, which began in the nineteenth century as little more than a mounted reconnaissance and harrying force, underwent intense growing pains with the rapid technological developments of the twentieth century. From its tentative beginnings during World War I, the eventual conversion of the traditional horse cavalry to a mechanized branch is arguably one of the greatest military transformations in history. Through Mobility We Conquer recounts the evolution and development of the U.S. Army’s modern mechanized cavalry and the doctrine necessary to use it effectively. The book also explores the debates over how best to use cavalry and how these discussions evolved during the first half of the century. During World War I, the first cavalry theorist proposed combining arms coordination with a mechanized force as an answer to the stalemate on the Western Front. Hofmann brings the story through the next fifty years, when a new breed of cavalrymen became cold war warriors as the U.S. Constabulary was established as an occupation security-police force. Having reviewed thousands of official records and manuals, military journals, personal papers, memoirs, and oral histories—many of which were only recently declassified—George F. Hofmann now presents a detailed study of the doctrine, equipment, structure, organization, tactics, and strategy of U.S. mechanized cavalry during the changing international dynamics of the first half of the twentieth century. Illustrated with dozens of photographs, maps, and charts, Through Mobility We Conquer examines how technology revolutionized U.S. forces in the twentieth century and demonstrates how perhaps no other branch of the military underwent greater changes during this time than the cavalry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: H. Beam Piper was a well-regarded and popular American science fiction author active in the 1940s, 1950s and early 1960s, who published many science fiction short stories, novelettes, novellas and novels. One major strand in his writing is envisioning a future history based on human civilization expanding throughout the galaxy, with a rather paternalistic approach to sentient alien species. Another important theme was Piper’s concept of “Paratime”: the idea that there are many parallel timelines branching off from each other, and that it’s possible—with the right technology—to move, and even carry out commerce, between these different timelines. Many of these stories are also frequently feature a rather tongue-in-cheek humor. This collection covers a wide range of his shorter fiction, almost all of which was published in various American science fiction magazines. One additional story included in this collection, “Rebel Raider,” however, is not science fiction or fantasy but a lightly-fictionalized account of events in the U.S. Civil War. A few of the stories were written in collaboration with John J. McGuire. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.
