Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The defeat of ZANU-PF in the 2008 parliamentary election marked the end of one-party rule in Zimbabwe. The Global Political Agreement signed later that resulted in a Government of National Unity, and the former ruling party was, for the first time, faced with the reality of sharing power. The Hard Road to Reform presents a penetrating analysis of developments since the GNU was established, reviewing recent political history from a range of perspectives - political, economic, social and historical, and featuring the best work of Zimbabwe's young scholars. As Brian Raftopolos writes in his introduction: 'the book is an attempt to analyse and assess both the hopes and frustrations of the last four years and to confront the harsh challenges that lie ahead.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asian/Americans, Education, and Crime: The Model Minority as Victim and Perpetrator analyzes Asian/Americans’ interactions with the U.S. criminal justice system as perpetrators and victims of crime. This book contributes to a limited amount of scholarly writing so that researchers, policymakers, and educators can gain a deeper and more nuanced understanding of the relationship between Asian/Americans and the criminal justice system. In reality, Asian/Americans in the United States are both the victims of crime and the perpetrators of crime. However, their characterization as the “model minority” masks the victimization and violence they experience in the twenty-first century.

Although 81 percent of teachers believe that standardized testing is a fair way of assessing student progress, the pressure surrounding teacher assessment and test grades has produced anxiety among teachers and students alike. This illuminating volume details the controversy over standardized testing in U.S. schools. The book provides a history of standardized testing as well as its evolution over the last few decades.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slavoj i ek and Srecko Horvat combine their critical clout to emphasize the dangers of ignoring Europe's growing wealth gap and the parallel rise in right-wing nationalism, which is directly tied to the fallout from the ongoing financial crisis and its prescription of imposed austerity. To general observers, the European Union's economic woes appear to be its greatest problem, but the real peril is an ongoing ideological–political crisis that threatens an era of instability and reactionary brutality. The fall of communism in 1989 seemed to end the leftist program of universal emancipation. However, nearly a quarter of a century later, the European Union has failed to produce any coherent vision that can mobilize people to action. Until recently, the only ideology receptive to European workers has been the nationalist call to "defend" against immigrant integration. Today, Europe is focused on regulating the development of capitalism and promoting a reactionary conception of its cultural heritage. Yet staying these courses, i ek and Horvat show, only strips Europe of its power and stifles its political ingenuity. The best hope is for Europe to revive and defend its legacy of universal egalitarianism, which benefits all parties by preserving the promise of equal representation.
