Book excerpt: Excerpt from Governor Garrard of Kentucky: His Descendants and Relatives The desire to learn more of my Garrard ancestors gave me the starting point in beginning this work. I could not, at the beginning, anticipate the difficulties and obstacles quite insurmountable which awaited me in my efforts to bring to light the history and family traditions which had been so long neglected and almost forgotten. Disappoint ments came at every turn. The older generation have all passed away, and those now living can recall but little derived from their parents. Download or read book Kentucky's Governors written by Lowell H. Harrison and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compiled and edited by Lowell H. Harrison, the essays in Kentucky's Governors profile every chief executive of the Bluegrass State from eighteenth-century governor Isaac Shelby to Ernie Fletcher. First published in 1985, this edition of Kentucky's Governors is expanded and revised to include governors Wilkinson, Jones, Patton, and Fletcher, as well as new information on respected figures such as Louie B. Nunn. An introduction by Kentucky's historian laureate, Thomas D. Clark, provides key insights into successive governors' evolving constitutional powers and their changing roles in political debates and policy formation. Following Clark's overview, each chapter presents significant biographical information while detailing the campaign, election, achievements, strengths, and weaknesses of each governor. To aid in further research, each contributor lists several suggested sources, both primary and secondary, for additional investigation into the lives and careers of Kentucky's leaders. A thorough index is also included to facilitate reference within this updated and revised edition. The profiles in Kentucky's Governors give insights into each leader's engagements with economic development, education, agriculture, and taxes, issues that have helped define two hundred years of history in the Bluegrass State.

Book Synopsis The County in Kentucky History by : Robert M. Ireland
Download or read book The County in Kentucky History written by Robert M. Ireland and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the nineteenth century, Kentucky was one of the nation's leading producers of racehorses, whiskey, tobacco—and new counties. By 1886 the three original Kentucky counties had been carved into 119 (belated 120th was to be formed in 1912). These small divisions commanded the fierce loyalty of their citizens and for most Kentuckians formed the center of political and community life. The County in Kentucky History shows the bitter strife of countywide feuds and the conviviality of court day, the sporadic outbreaks of ill-feeling between town and country and the high-spirited brawls that regularly accompanied elections. Robert M. Ireland traces the structural changes in county government from the days when justices of the peace made up a self-perpetuating county court to the more democratic period when the buying of votes replaced the buying of offices. The most beneficial change that could come to local government—consolidation into fewer units—Ireland sees as unlikely where the tradition of county loyalties and rivalries remains as strong as it does in Kentucky.
