This book was released on 2003-02-01 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The anthrax incidents following the 9/11 terrorist attacks put the spotlight on the nation's public health agencies, placing it under an unprecedented scrutiny that added new dimensions to the complex issues considered in this report. The Future of the Public's Health in the 21st Century reaffirms the vision of Healthy People 2010, and outlines a systems approach to assuring the nation's health in practice, research, and policy. This approach focuses on joining the unique resources and perspectives of diverse sectors and entities and challenges these groups to work in a concerted, strategic way to promote and protect the public's health. Focusing on diverse partnerships as the framework for public health, the book discusses: The need for a shift from an individual to a population-based approach in practice, research, policy, and community engagement. The status of the governmental public health infrastructure and what needs to be improved, including its interface with the health care delivery system. The roles nongovernment actors, such as academia, business, local communities and the media can play in creating a healthy nation. Providing an accessible analysis, this book will be important to public health policy-makers and practitioners, business and community leaders, health advocates, educators and journalists.

Book Synopsis The Economics of Public Spending by : David Miles
Download or read book The Economics of Public Spending written by David Miles and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2003-03-20 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Economics of Public Spending investigates the extent of government involvement in the economy, details its rational, and traces its historical record. The book unites articles previously published in Fiscal Studies, each one addressing a different area of expenditure and written by an economist specializing in that field. They describe both the data on public expenditure and the theory relevant to understanding the policy issues. A new introduction investigates the overall role of the public sector and discusses the general theory of public expenditure. In providing a detailed analysis of public expenditure, the book makes an important contribution to the economics literature. There are no other texts with this breadth of coverage or depth of analysis. Insights are provided into both the policy issues, cross-country comparisons of expenditure, and alternative approaches to economic analysis. The chapters apply the tools of orthodox public finance, public choice, modern public economics, and game theory to reach a range of policy proposals and conclusions. These demonstrate the range and potential of economic analysis when applied to these important issues.

Download or read book Unhealthy Profits written by John Lister and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-11-19 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Private Finance Initiative (PFI) - the use of private funds to build public sector infrastructure - began in 1992. Since then it has been one of the most contentious policies advocated by both Conservative and Labour governments. After 25 years of costly failure the policy has now been abandoned by Labour and Tory parties. 125 British PFIs are NHS projects, which will cost over £80 billion for buildings built for £12bn. Many PFI companies are now owned offshore, paying no tax on profits, while the extra costs of PFI hang like a millstone dragging down NHS trusts. Unhealthy Profits explores the theory and practice, costs and consequences of PFI, how it has spread world-wide, and what can be done about it. And as a unique case study, it tells the story of the UNISON Branch in Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust that has commissioned the book - and fought PFI all the way.
Book Synopsis Public Health Policies in the European Union by : Walter Holland
Download or read book Public Health Policies in the European Union written by Walter Holland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this volume recognises that the role and status of public health in Europe has again become increasingly recognized and features contributions on various nations within the European Community. This is not only in individual countries but also in the policies of the European Union as exemplified in the Maastricht and Amsterdam Treaties. This book is a critical account of the present structures and policies of member countries and how policies have evolved within the European Commission. It describes both possible models and needs and contrasts these with the current legislative framework. It thus serves the needs of both practitioners, policy makers, policy analysts and students interested in public health and social policy developments.

Book Synopsis Care Without Coverage by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Care Without Coverage written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-06-20 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Americans believe that people who lack health insurance somehow get the care they really need. Care Without Coverage examines the real consequences for adults who lack health insurance. The study presents findings in the areas of prevention and screening, cancer, chronic illness, hospital-based care, and general health status. The committee looked at the consequences of being uninsured for people suffering from cancer, diabetes, HIV infection and AIDS, heart and kidney disease, mental illness, traumatic injuries, and heart attacks. It focused on the roughly 30 million-one in seven-working-age Americans without health insurance. This group does not include the population over 65 that is covered by Medicare or the nearly 10 million children who are uninsured in this country. The main findings of the report are that working-age Americans without health insurance are more likely to receive too little medical care and receive it too late; be sicker and die sooner; and receive poorer care when they are in the hospital, even for acute situations like a motor vehicle crash.

The authors also examine country specific features and every country chapter is written by an expert in the field who has a thorough knowledge of both the national pension systems and the data sets on which the empirical analyses are based.
