Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book collects expert contributions on actuarial modelling and related topics, from machine learning to legal aspects, and reflects on possible insurance designs during an epidemic/pandemic. Starting by considering the impulse given by COVID-19 to the insurance industry and to actuarial research, the text covers compartment models, mortality changes during a pandemic, risk-sharing in the presence of low probability events, group testing, compositional data analysis for detecting data inconsistencies, behaviouristic aspects in fighting a pandemic, and insurers' legal problems, amongst others. Concluding with an essay by a practicing actuary on the applicability of the methods proposed, this interdisciplinary book is aimed at actuaries as well as readers with a background in mathematics, economics, statistics, finance, epidemiology, or sociology.

Download or read book Government interventions to support retirement incomes written by Great Britain: National Audit Office and published by Stationery Office. This book was released on 2013-07-12 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Government measures to reduce the liability of the state for supporting people in their retirement are being managed separately, without adequate consideration of their combined impact on the overall objective of increasing retirement incomes. There is no overarching programme or single accountability for encouraging people to save for retirement. The Treasury leads on overall savings strategy, and DWP on workplace saving but, without a whole system view there is a risk that individual, but co-dependent interventions may not be effective in increasing saving for retirement. Spending on the state pension and pensioner benefits increased from 5.5 per cent of GDP in 1990 to 6.9 per cent in 2011-12, in part because of the growing pensioner population, but also because of increased spending per capita on pensioner benefits. The Government expects to reduce the potential long-term spending liability by increasing the future state pension age, introducing automatic enrolment into workplace pensions and changing the state pension. However the existing initiatives to manage this problem face challenges. Government does not have a formal published strategy to influence employers. The success of encouraging saving for retirement through automatic enrolment into a pension also depends on the responses of individuals, pension providers and employers - in particular on the proportion of employees who remain with the schemes. The value of the UK state pension, as a proportion of pre-retirement earnings, has historically been low compared to other developed countries, and projections for future spending on state pensions and pensioner benefits may prove too optimistic

Download or read book Practical Risk Theory for Actuaries written by C.D. Daykin and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1993-12-01 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic textbook covers all aspects of risk theory in a practical way. It builds on from the late R.E. Beard's extremely popular book Risk Theory, but features more emphasis on simulation and modeling and on the use of risk theory as a practical tool. Practical Risk Theory is a textbook for practicing and student actuaries on the practical aspects of stochastic modeling of the insurance business. It has its roots in the classical theory of risk but introduces many new elements that are important in managing the insurance business but are usually ignored in the classical theory. The authors avoid overcomplicated mathematics and provide an abundance of diagrams.

Download or read book Modelling Longevity Dynamics for Pensions and Annuity Business written by Ermanno Pitacco and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-01-29 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mortality improvements, uncertainty in future mortality trends and the relevant impact on life annuities and pension plans constitute important topics in the field of actuarial mathematics and life insurance techniques. In particular, actuarial calculations concerning pensions, life annuities and other living benefits (provided, for example, by long-term care insurance products and whole life sickness covers) are based on survival probabilities which necessarily extend over a long time horizon. In order to avoid underestimation of the related liabilities, the insurance company (or the pension plan) must adopt an appropriate forecast of future mortality. Great attention is currently being devoted to the management of life annuity portfolios, both from a theoretical and a practical point of view, because of the growing importance of annuity benefits paid by private pension schemes. In particular, the progressive shift from defined benefit to defined contribution pension schemes has increased the interest in life annuities with a guaranteed annual amount. This book provides a comprehensive and detailed description of methods for projecting mortality, and an extensive introduction to some important issues concerning longevity risk in the area of life annuities and pension benefits. It relies on research work carried out by the authors, as well as on a wide teaching experience and in CPD (Continuing Professional Development) initiatives. The following topics are dealt with: life annuities in the framework of post-retirement income strategies; the basic mortality model; recent mortality trends that have been experienced; general features of projection models; discussion of stochastic projection models, with numerical illustrations; measuring and managing longevity risk.

Download or read book The cost of public service pensions written by Great Britain: National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010-03-12 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been much public discussion about the affordability of public service pensions. This National Audit Office report aims to bring greater transparency to, and understanding of, the cash costs involved. Total payments to more than 2 million pensioners in the UK's four largest pay-as-you-go pension schemes (also known as unfunded schemes - where current employee and employer contributions are used to pay current pensions) were £19.3 billion in 2008-09, a real terms increase of 38 per cent since 1999-2000. This is driven by more employees retiring each year, which is a substantially more significant factor than longer lifespans. Employee contributions of £4.4 billion reduced the taxpayer's share of costs to £14.9 billion in 2008-09. The employee element grew by 56 per cent in real terms since 1999-2000 because staff numbers and contribution rates have increased. The report also looks at projections of payments across all UK public sector pay-as-you-go pension schemes over the next fifty years. Expressed in terms of constant 2008-09 prices, the Government Actuary's Department projects total payments rising to over £79 billion a year by 2059-60. The Treasury has a reasonable framework in place for assessing future costs and has undertaken some analysis on the sensitivity of projections to changes in key assumptions. The Treasury has not undertaken any systematic analysis of the effects of changing its assumption that there will be zero public service headcount growth, despite the existence of several factors that could put upwards pressure on staff numbers in the long term.

This book was released on 2007-05-03 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These tables, prepared by the Government Actuary's Department, are designed to assist the courts in calculating the amount of compensation appropriate to a range of situations in personal injury and fatal accident cases. Also known as the Ogden Tables (after Sir Michael Ogden, QC, the original working party chairman) this is the 6th edition of the publication which supersedes the 5th edition (ISBN 9780115601170) published in 2004. The new multipliers use mortality rates from the latest available population projections, which take account of data following the last National Census. They relate to pecuniary loss for life and for loss of earnings to pension age, both for males and females at different ages. The edition includes a section covering discounts to the working life multiplier for contingencies other than mortality, based on two recent research studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this critical account of New Labour's economic and welfare policies in their first two terms in office, John Grieve Smith suggests that, far from pursuing any radical new agenda, they have been actively consolidating the Thatcherite Revolution. If Labour is to offer a genuine alternative to the Tories, and achieve its long standing objective of a fairer society, radical developments in policy are needed. John Grieve Smith discusses the policies needed to ensure expansion and full employment here and in the rest of the European Union. He examines the whittling away of pensions and other social security benefits, and the growing reliance on means testing, together with the need for higher and more progressive taxation if the quality of health and education services is to be improved.
