Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of a Swiss Poet: A Study of Gottfried Keller's Life and Works Swiss literature has often been regarded as falling under the heading of the languages employed. We have been accustomed to class French Swiss writers among French authors, and the German Swiss writers we have considered as belonging to German literature. Obviously they have been influenced by the two languages, but there is a colour in Swiss writers' work which places it apart from German and Prendi literature. Even jean Jacques Rousseau and Madame de Stael are not French, but Swiss in mentality. Amiel too is unlatin in thought, and although he mastered German literature in his wide reading, his mind is not akin to the German spirit. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Survey of the criticism devoted to Gottfried Keller, the important nineteenth-century writer in German. The works of Gottfried Keller (1819-1890) rank alongside those of Goethe and Thomas Mann, yet this volume is the first in any language to examine the critical assessment and scholarly expertise devoted to him, ranging from the early stages of journalistic criticism to the present day. Professor Ruppel begins by exploring the literary industry in the nineteenth century, the literary market place, the tastes of the reading public, and the expectations of editors, before going on to survey representative journalistic assessments of Keller's writing, including critical correspondence from Keller's contemporaries. Subsequent chapters examine in chronological order the most important milestones in Keller scholarship, particularly twentieth-century criticism and the Anglo-American tradition. There is also a brief history of the translations of Keller's works into English, investigating some of the difficulties confronting English translators of Keller's poetically creative German. The study concludes with an overview of recent scholarly assessments covering the past twenty-five years.

Book Synopsis Diary and Dreambook by : Gottfried Keller
Download or read book Diary and Dreambook written by Gottfried Keller and published by Newcomb Livraria Press. This book was released on with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a new 2023 translation of both Gottfried Keller's (1819-1890) personal diary and his dream book, followed by an Afterword by the translator, a timeline of his life and works and an index of his works. In 1838, when he was barely 20 years old, Heller stated that he felt that the independence of anyone who did not keep a diary was threatened, because "... this independence can only be preserved by constant reflection on oneself, and this is best done by keeping a diary". The poet himself did not adhere to this maxim for the rest of his life- in 1843, he kept a short diary that gives a deeper insight into the poet's life and work. In the Dream Book, which he kept from 1846, he recorded his dreams but also reflected on political events such as the revolutionary year of 1848. These two works are deeply intertwined, so they are presented in one volume.
